We went in for an appointment and decided to leave before seeing the doctor because the office receptionist/assistant was exceptionally rude. She had the audacity to roll her eyes and comment to another patient about our "inability" to appropriately fill out some medical form. OK, our bad for missing some questions, but her attitude was so inappropriate we left before we saw the doctor. And the wait time wasn't that great either (depending on what you're use to). We had been waiting for half an hour past our appointment time and the doctor still had at least one other patient to see before us. read more

I had pulled/hurt something in my foot a couple of weeks ago and wasn't sure what. I was under a short time constraint, as I was leaving for Southern California for good in 2 weeks. I called at 8:30AM Monday morning to Dr. Kelso's office, and his nice receptionist mentioned they had a cancellation that day and they could get me in at 2. I arrived at his office which is located at UCDMC. THANK GOD his office was on the first floor - the only way it could've been closer to the main entrance is if it replaced the welcome desk or the snack shop. I got in about 15 minutes early and was asked to sign some forms, the receptionist took a copy of my health insurance, etc. After she processed my forms, I was led into one of the rooms shortly after and saw the doctor about 2:10. After twisting and turning and pushing my foot every which way multiple times without me feeling pain, Dr. Kelso couldn't immediately figure out my problem. He also took a couple of X-rays. My feet are flat but naturally have a low arch and it showed up, as well as extra bone in both my feet. Although I mentioned that (1) it hurt more in shoes and (2) even while walking barefoot I would feel a strain of some muscle/tendon, he couldn't figure it out as apparently there is a bone/nerve/tendon/muscle around that area in the bottom of my foot, and considering his prodding wasn't inciting any pain, he concluded it was bruise of the bone/muscle area. Although I asked if I needed a short walking boot (had one in my car..yes my feet are gimpy!) he said it was not necessary. Since I was leaving in a few weeks, he proceeded to fit me with some over-the-counter orthotics (the black Superfeet premium, which I had to pay out-of-pocket immediately for $45 - not a bad price, it is about $40 online). The Superfeet really were perfect sized for my feet. He modified my shoe and the orthotics and gave me some direction on how to best protect my extra bone on my navicular. I asked for some exercises to help me strengthen that area but he said there is nothing I can do about the extra bone and did not recommend surgery. Dr. Kelso also recommended a couple other podiatrists who knew more about biomechanics in the Southern California (Newport/Long Beach) area.. Apparently they were from his class. I left with a goodie bag full of extra foam padding that he had used for my tennis shoes and for inserts into my shoes, a paper cutout for the foam padding. a catalogue and notes on where to buy recommended shoes, and the size of the Superfeet he had given me for future note. All in all, I really appreciated all the time he took in putting together the orthotics and customizing both the shoes and orthotics for my feet. If you are looking for exercises/biomechanical issues you may want to look elsewhere. read more

Dr. Kelso has seen me periodically to make and fine tune my running orthotics. He takes the time to listen and hear the problem spots, make the accurate adjustments.... and I'm good to run for a few hundred more miles. The office is convenient and everyone is friendly. Went to this dude with foot pain. He took an x-ray. Then stuck a needle in my foot. I won't say it was great, because it was a needle in my foot. But it took the pain away. And that part is great. I noticed someone commented on the front desk. My experience was that the guy at the front desk was helpful and friendly. Assuming it was a different person as the whole gender thing sorta tipped me off, but wanted to mention. Small office. Clean. Friendly. Easy. Definitely would use again. read more

My mother has been experiencing foot problems for 5 years. Her regular podiatrist (who apparently is highly recommended) is clearly not doing the job for her anymore. After the 8th complaint in 2 months regarding her new (ever ill-fitting) orthotics from him, I told her she owed it to herself to get a second opinion. I was referred to Dr. Kelso from a friend and was told he came highly regarded. Dr. Kelso saw my mother immediately after her scheduled appointment. He listened intently as my mother explained that her current orthotics had to be sent out & returned to the lab multiple times to get "tweaked" and they were still not supporting her feet they way they should. Dr. Kelso went above and beyond to make proper additions to manipulate, shave and mold my mother's orthotics so that they finally gave her the proper support so she could finally walk without pain. He spend nearly 2 hours with her one-on-one until they both felt it was right for her. They even discussed other options her other podiatrist clearly hadn't had time for. My mother was not only pleased with Dr. Kelso's work & results, she was happy with the receptionist at the front. A lovely young lady who clearly cares about her job and took the time to ask the right questions to properly process paperwork. And she's funny and made the office a pleasant place to be. This was overall worth a 3 hour drive away from home to see a doctor who cares and does the job right the first time around. Thank you! read more

Dr Kelso and his staff do excellent work. I have been seeing him for almost two years now for diabetic foot issues. He takes the time to explain what and why he is doing things. He takes the time to do the job right. The Dr will also not blow sunshine up your backside. He is honest with you and will tell you what the possible consequences are of not following the treatment plan without being rude or obnoxious about it. After having a toe removed and wound debridement. He came to the hospital almost every day to check my foot and make sure the hospital staff was on top of it. Definitely one of the top Drs I have ever seen, and I have seen alot of them. More importantly, he smuggled me in a couple of small bags of Planter's Tropical Blend Cashews from an undisclosed location. read more

I can't say enough about Dr. Kelso and his staff, they have truly helped me get back on my feet. I shattered my heel and have multiple pins and a metal plate in my foot...however many Doctors felt I wasn't going to be back to normal and Dr. Kelso proved them wrong, I am well on my way to recovery and I couldn't have asked for a more caring staff and amazing doctor. I had surgery Jan 23, 2012, and since then Dr. Kelso and his staff has made sure that I get everything possible for recovery, there so warm welcoming and knowledgable that I feel that anyone who wants true genuine service and has any problem with their feet, will come to this office. I just went to see Dr. Kelso yesterday. I have diabetes and had extreme pain in my foot and a possible infection on the same foot. I called yesterday morning and he squeezed me in that afternoon. His office staff was extremely helpful and empathetic. He took a lot of time examining, treating and explaining what was going on with me and what to expect! I followed his instructions and today when I woke, my pain and infection were substantially reduced. When you are in pain you need a doctor and his/her staff to care about your pain and want to see you as soon as possible...that is Dr. Kelso's set of values. My daughter was visiting me in Sacramento from her home in Los Angeles when, because of a family emergency, she needed a cast removed from her leg so she could return to southern California. She contacted the office of Dr. Steven Kelso, who saw her that morning. As it was two days before her scheduled cast removal, he also x-rayed her foot to ensure healing before fitting her with a walking shoe and sending her on her way, even taking the time to show her on the X-Ray the location of the break and to explain why he believed it was an appropriate time to remove the cast. The friendliness of Dr. Kelso's staff and the compassion and expertise of Dr. Kelso alleviated my daughter's panic that she wouldn't be able to attend to the family emergency in LA. This was one if the best experiences I ever had with a doctor and his whole staff. They were kind, worked around my schedule and saved me hundreds in inserts. I have Kaiser and I needed inserts which they don't cover. Dr Kelso spent a good deal of time with me, recommended treatment, set me up with inserts 1/6 the cost of others, and took time to teach me what shoes to buy. The appointment was reasonable and I will go back for a second opinion from him. If you are looking for a great doctor, here's your man. read more

My husband and I have been having problems with gout. Dr. Kelso has been great. He is very thorough and takes his time to explain what needs to be done and we can actually walk out of his office almost pain free. I will always see him for my foot problems. read more
