I want to share my disappointing experience with Randy, the owner of Metro Fitness. I moved In July…read moreand was committed to investing in my health before starting a really stressful job. In July, I purchased a $700 pass for 10 personal training sessions as part of a "summer special", with the promise that a master's-educated trainer would be available. Unfortunately, that trainer never started working at the gym, and I was not informed of this until late September--months after waiting and following up. Despite knowing my schedule, Randy repeatedly suggested trainers who were already fully booked. He then set me up with an unqualified intern who worked at the front desk. When I expressed my concerns, he acknowledged that this wasn't acceptable and offered Pilates as an alternative. However, that turned out to be another false promise, as no sessions or teachers were actually available. After months of back and forth and empty promises, I requested a refund, as it was clear I was not receiving the services I had paid for. Randy initially agreed but then delayed the refund, citing financial excuses like needing to wait until after the "metro gala." By November, I still hadn't received my money, and he stopped responding to my calls and texts entirely. Now it is mid January. This has been a frustrating and disheartening experience, especially as someone in a low-paying position after completing graduate school. I share this in hopes of warning others about this gym and Randy's business practices. If anyone has advice on handling situations like this, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. As an aside, I had a bad experience with a trainer there who was really creepy and asked extremely personal questions. Most of the gym is dedicated to the personal training space. There are never wipes or cleaning supplies convenient or restocked to clean equipment after use.

Douglas, my trainer, is pushing me the right amount to make a difference and I always leave feeling good about the work I've done and his partnership in my progress. Also it's just a great gym. I use the gym facilities (including the eGym system which is very cool), and we have thought about taking advantage of some of the childcare options they offer like "parents night out" The place hasn't changed a ton since it first opened. The locker rooms could use a refresh but the workout areas are solid. I'm not currently a pool user so I can't comment on that. I do feel like the cost to benefit ratio is worth it - especially for a family membership.

I often come here with individuals with special needs and both the staff and members look and treat them like they're absolutely disgusted. You'd think an area known for its money would have class. Unfortunately, from my experiences here; that is the furthest from the truth. Due to the fact that I am not a large donor of the YMCA, those who do donate are basically buying a pass to be terrible people and the YMCA as a cooperation are allowing it. YMCA, you have disappointed myself and many others within my community. Do better.

The equipment is old but is still in working condition and in good shape considering it's all been used all day every day its what you'd expect from any other gym. I've been going to this gym for almost 2 years now and have only had good experiences! This facility and staff are a lot better in many ways compared to the bigger named gyms that i have been to in the area.

The men's locker room has lately had a musty smell to it and there's been a sign up stating damage due to "humidity" but nothing ever done about it. Equipment is in severe disrepair and neglected. I've been paying 29.99/month and I honestly can't tell you what the owners use my monthly payment for, it's definitely not gym upkeep. The equipment is run down, rusty, broken and overall gross. You go to clean off any equipment and a rust like color comes off on the towel -- barbells and dumbbells included. Just using weights there makes you feel gross because of how much filth and neglect they've experienced. There's a pool and a hot tub but I've never used them. Given the state of everything else, I couldn't trust it. Mirrors are cracked all over the gym, the ceiling leaks in several spots. For what you are asked to pay and what you get in return -- this place isn't worth it. CNY doesn't have a shortage of quality gyms. Champions misses the mark by a mile.

I'm definitely glad I did. The staff is fairly helpful, some more so than others. The rates for membership are greatly reduced for college students, but you can't really put a price on being able to stay healthy. There are a wide, wide variety of machines available for use - from your typical treadmill to more advanced and specialized machines. In the middle of the day, there usually isn't too many people there, but later on towards the evening it starts getting more busy. They also offer several classes, Zumba being one of them, but I haven't looked into any details. There is a full locker room with lockers, shower, toilets, and sinks for the regular visits. Out near the machines is a water fountain and scale to weigh oneself. All-in-all it is a well featured gym with plenty of ways to get and stay in shape.

The rest is history. The staff who first greeted me--Matt and Diane--are so kind, cordial, and welcoming, not to mention knowledgeable, I had to keep investigating. The facilities--although parts are over 20 years old--are in great shape. So far have only swum, taken Silver Sneakers workouts, and used sauna and steam rooms, but I am hooked. The pool is not crowded; Patty and Vera, SS instructors super good and hilarious and the other ladies and gents are welcoming and helpful too. I also see children, teens, serious muscle-builder types too there for various activities. It's a real gem in this part of CNY. Try it--but don't use the pool please. Want to keep it to myself! :- )
