Just had the best experience ever at my local DMV! So unexpected. I arrived early to find a line of twenty people more anxious than me about the wait. It was a chilly 36 degrees and they let us in early - great start - thank you for thinking of us. We were processed rapidly and I sat comfortably for about 20 minutes when my number was directed to window 9. Ms. R. Marena was polite and listened to my experience with the postal service with regard to my license and registration. She assisted me in providing the documentation that she needed to solve both problems. Throughout the process she ensured that she understood my goals and consistently demonstrated support, patience, and a smile. I can't believe that I am saying this but Ms. R. I was talking to receptionist, she was trying to help me because I told her I am not good at working during computer, suddenly security person started saying something in other language,then they started laughing at me. I asked that security why are you laughing? Said because you said you can't work with computer& smartphone.I said you don't have right laughe at me, then he started yelling at me and told me go out. The archetypical dysfunctional State Gov't bureaucracy (even worse than the one depicted in Zootopia)! Given their workload, I sort of expect long waits and poor customer service when I visit the DMV, but what I do not expect or appreciate is poor communication and conflicting guidance. If, like me, you do hope for some degree of consistency and clarity...do not visit this location. Somehow the staff here (but pretty sure this is a VA DMV-wide issue...never experienced this with other states I've lived in) has forgotten that the onus for effective communication lies with the communicator (in this case, the DMV) not the customer. Word to the wise,...bring all the documentation you can, every time you visit, and God help you if show up without a fresh filled-out copy of a form you previously submitted (yes, even during the same day/week / month). Because of their poor communication and bureaucratic ineptitude, I have been forced to visit this particular DMV location more times than I care to remember. And in every visit, I have been taken aback by the near complete lack of customer service/appreciation and general hostility of the staff. Maybe I just never get "served" by the more cheerful employees...or perhaps I manage to visit at the worse times? My biggest frustration, however, is in having been forced to take off from work (which means less money in my pocket) and burn through precious vacation days multiple times because, -- like several other reviewers, -- I have received conflicting guidance as to what sort of documentation is needed. I'm an retired combat veteran and try not to let my PTSD, and the tyranny of age, get the best of me...but after being turned away during my last visit (even with a scheduled appointment for which I showed up 2 hours early), I finally asked to speak to a manager. I had already provided residency documentation to this same location only weeks before, and followed both the VA DMV website instructions and those on my appointment slip to the letter. Nonetheless, I was rejected for not having brought my proof of state residency documents and a fresh version of the same form I had also submitted previously. To be very clear, there is no written guidance anywhere that requires residency documentation for a Road Test appointment. However, this manager advised me that EVERY single time you visit the DMV you "should" bring multiple documents which prove your U.S. citizenship/legal residency AS WELL AS state residency (utility bills, etc.) even if/when the online instructions or your appointment slip do not require it. So, should a DMV representative tell you that you do not need to bring X documentation (which happed to me twice), DON'T BELIEVE THEM! From now on, because of the inconsistent guidance, I plan to bring every single piece of documentation I have. And make sure the date on your proof of residency documents is within the past 30 days (to be safe). Finally, while I am a strong advocate for diversity, this location would probably be a bit more efficient if more of the DMV Customer Service Representatives either spoke better English and/or more of them spoke more foreign languages (in order to better support their customer base). Bottom-Line: Unless you are willing to carry-in a pile of documentation every time you visit or perhaps just like being rejected by an angry and inconsistent staff, give strong consideration to visiting some other DMV location. read more

This DMV office has closed but once a month the mobile DMV unit comes to the parking lot there. I needed to get my car registered since it was bought out of state and to get my license plates moved to the new car. I arrived a little before 9 when it opens and had about a 10 minute wait ONLY. Once inside a Mr. Pannu helped me through the maze of registering my new car, getting the plates transferred to the new car, and getting my county sticker. There was some confusion since the dealer in MN where I bought the car did not explain that the title was sent to the main office of DMV. Mr. Pannu took the time to look up the information for me and then it was easy to complete my business. He was so knowledgeable, kind, and, professional and best of all, I was finished in about 15 minutes. This was my best experience with the DMV ever! Thank you again Mr. Pannu. read more

First of all, couldn't get through via phone. Once I did get through, I was put on hold for 25 minutes [with no "expected wait time" given]. Second-- upon arriving on site-- no parking spots to be found; and no overflow spaces available in the immediate vicinity. After driving round and round the parking lot for a while, finally just had to wait, parked in the middle of a driving lane [ten minutes] for an already served customer to exit the parking lot. Seriously, this is what we get for the high fees we pay?! Once inside, there was a 20+ minute wait in line [no signage, by the way, to indicate where to go]. After finally arriving at the service desk, I was instructed to go sit and wait [another 30 minutes]. When my number was finally called, I was received by a young woman, named "Sarah," of East Indian descent, who interacted with me, like a machine: "Document please," she kept saying. "What 'document?'" How was I to know what "document" she was talking about? I had SEVERAL documents. Evidently, she was referring to my application form. Why not ask, "May I see your application form, please?" When I responded in a perplexed manner, she seemed impatient and acted rather condescending. After directing me to take the eye test [never actually INSTRUCTED me, as to what she was talking about...as though I should know what the procedure would be]-- she began engaging in conversation with a co-worker, WHILE I WAS TAKING THE TEST. I had to stop, to ask if she was even paying attention to my responses [she was not!]. I could have been BLIND for all she knew! I was like, "hey, are you even paying attention?" She said, "sorry, go ahead...read it again." [Her supervisor-- a short, bald man, with glasses-- was nice. He's the person, who signed off on my paperwork, after viewing my ID and application.] As a consumer, I am getting very tired of being waited on, here in Northern Va-- by people, like this young, arrogant civil servant, who seem only to TAKE from our country [in her case, a FAT SALARY], while showing neither respect, nor courtesy for customers, like me, who were raised in, and have SACRIFICED FOR OUR COUNTRY. They seem to feel emboldened-- apparently, never corrected by management-- in interacting with customers in such a rude fashion. As one fellow-reviewer wrote: "It's NOT OKAY." Clearly, DMV administrators need to do a better job. They could start by putting themselves in customers shoes-- e.g., try to phone in [while waiting half-an-hour]; try to park their car [twenty-minute ordeal]; wait for service [one hour]; and then get served by weird, discourteous, immigrant twits, like "Sarah!" My grandparents were immigrants...my family is comprised of many individuals, who have worked as civil servants...Their standards were high. Administrators today, need to expect better-- for the good of all citizens. read more

This was my best DMV experience ever, and I've lived in a few states. If you need to get car-related stuff done, like registration, titling, plating, this is the place to go. I came here at about 11 am, had printed and filled out all of my forms to register, title, and get plates for a car, stood in line for about 5 minutes, and then was already being called to take a seat to get my stuff done. These DMV Selects are basically little offices that look like the bank basically and they take care of the easier DMV stuff. This is housed in a nondescript government building, and as per the website, local governments contract with the DMV to get things done a little faster. The people who help you out are unhurried and helpful. There's a ton of parking. I wasn't even sure I was in the right building until I noticed that the address was correct. I had brought water and food and a book but seriously, right before lunch time I was able to get out of here in less than 20 minutes. Very impressed. Would recommend coming to a DMV Select whenever possible. Unfortunately, it does not handle things like driver licenses and permits. You gotta go to the real DMV for that kind of stuff. read more
