Great location for our AirBNB at Sterchi Lofts, but felt like we were in a warehouse. It was creepy at night because of the lighting and sliding metal doors, but it was secure with a code at the door. Positive things first: the location could not be better. It is faster to walk anywhere downtown than it would be to drive and find parking. The maintenance staff are very friendly, and if you are nice to them they will help you out and make sure your needs are taken of quickly. Noise between apartments is minimal due to the concrete floors and some walls. You can make these apartments look homey if you are willing to put in some effort decorating. White concrete walls don't do much for aesthetics. Believe the ratings when they say that the management staff is terrible. They are disorganized and don't communicate properly with one another. They have tried to become more organized this year than in the past, but I have not found this to be the case. Although they do send rare communications by email which is a bonus! The concrete floors are very difficult to keep clean, especially as they haven't been resealed in years. The walls have stains on them and are rarely painted. I was told that my apartment would be painted and resealed before I moved in and they were not. I was told they would be done over christmas break, and they were not. If you want something on the cheap side (my studio was $800 a month) then these are a good choice. Watch out for the utility prices though! My studio was around 200 to keep comfortable and my friends in a 2 bedroom paid nearly $350!! read more

I really just wanted a "first to review." I'm so addicted!!! When there's more information I'll give you an update. For now: We knew we wanted to live in a nice place DT Knoxville, though not the UT area, but we're not yet ready to buy. We set our sites on Sterchi Lofts, but made sure not to get our hopes up too high. Turns out, the precaution wasn't necessary. Contacting the management company the first time was a little difficult. But once my fiance got someone on the phone, it's been smooth sailing from there. We needed a place for June. When my in-laws checked it out they were shown around two apartments and given all the specs. They thought the girl showing them around was perfectly nice. When we decided to accept, they emailed the rental contract to my fiance. We looked it over, I crossed off a few unfair provisions (god, I'm such a budding lawyer), sent it back, they didn't have any problem, accepted our deposit (review partly based on this, which is unfair, I mean, any deposit is cheaper than Boston!) and we're in. We get there in June. We did have to pay an upfront pet fee. Which is silly, I think, for cats seeing as how there isn't any carpet in the place (or flooring of any kind...it's all concrete). Can you think of any reasons for upfront pet fees in this situation? I welcome comments. I know they're illegal in MA. Wonder if they are in TN too... I'm also a little concerned that the apartment shown to my in-laws was open when they looked at it (end of March) and is remaining open until June for us. Makes me wonder if there are problems with the place. That's all I got for now. I'm super excited to move in! I'll let you know more soon as I know! UPDATE: *sigh* I've gotten a bunch of questions about this place from other lucky Yelpers and I've always told them the truth. My glowing review was a little, well, naive. But then, hey, sometimes you win you lose when you rent and walk into a place sight unseen! This time we kinda lost. After reading my review, I see the signs now. Next cliche, folks? Hindsight and that whole 20/20 vision thing. It started slowly. We moved in in June. We couldn't get the heat to just plain leave us alone. Our air conditioner ran nonstop. It never got below 85 degrees in our apartment and our electricity bill ran us about 300 a month. I'm not kidding. My husband (yeppers, we finally did it!) works from home and was absolutely miserable. We thought several things trying to locate the silver lining: we live on the ninth floor and heat travels up, our beautiful view just so happens to also be a view of the afternoon sun, we're not yet used to this southern summer and, hey, this apartment is a little bigger than the last (last was a 1 bedroom plus and this was a 2 bedrooms, not really different, but the rooms were bigger and had higher ceilings) and maybe we just need to get used to the extra air conditioning. Our poorly constructed facade slowly crumbled. Some friendly neighbors on the fifth floor in a 1 bedroom had the same electricity bill and heat problems. Turns out, another neighbor of ours and friend of theirs in a basement apartment had the same electricity bill and heat problems. A basement apartment! We were devastated when we found out the reason from an inspector we hired (more about that later): When the building was being renovated, air units were purchased for each apartment to be placed on the outside of the building. The historical society said no way and now the owner had a real problem. Solution? He placed those outdoor units in closets indoors. The problem? They now blew both cold and hot air into the units. I'm not joking. They tried to jerry it to fix the problem, but, clearly, that never happened. Management did eventually place a window air unit in. This went into the bedroom so that we could sleep. However, there was no way to place a unit in the rest of the apartment given that the windows weren't the right type. In fact, to even place it in the bedroom they had to replace the window with a big piece of plywood. And on top of everything else, now we're paying to run the defunct air conditioning and an additional window unit. That's a lot written about air conditioning, but then we dealt with it for a long time and I think it's important to show that I'm not just bitching, but had very real concerns that will face pretty much anybody moving into the place. I can't write much more (word limit), but here are a few of the more substantial problems. Pigeons in the air ducts, which the maintenance man informed us is a problem sometimes, but took forever to fix. Smelly garbage chutes with some residents taking to pouring bleach down them. Very unprofessional management, college crowd (if you're not fond of that kind of thing) and defunct amenities including a broken down workout room. All for the low, low price of living in likely the most expensive apartments in Knoxville. Important to be informed! read more

Overall, my experience with Sterchi has been very positive. The staff are friendly and helpful, (I've locked myself out twice and they have always rushed over to let me back into my unit, free of charge), and if there is ever a problem, they are eager to see it resolved. The location is terrific. I could not be happier. My unit is a 1bed / 1bath on the 5th floor, which is really the seven floor because of how that block of downtown was raised a long tie ago to level out Gay St. I moved in in December of 2016 and have been there for about 5 months. I have NEVER turned on my heat or air, and the unit stays comfortable. It got a little cold in the winter, but that's what sweatshirts are for, and it can be warm this time of year, especially in the evening when the sun is shining, but an open window and the infrequent use of a fan keep it from getting hot. Also, the hallways are climate controlled so that helps offset the temperate outside. When I moved in I was given new appliances to replace the outdated ones, and my washer/dryer combination unit is fairly new as well. I received a month of free rent with the signing of a 12 month lease, and was able to pay my deposit in two payments. The residents seem to chiefly be students, young professional, and young couples. And it seems like everyone has a dog. Some of the students definitely like to party on the weekends, but noise doesn't really bother me, so that's not a drawback as far as I'm concerned. My bills are as follows: $60/month for Comcast internet, and an average of $95 for electricity and water ($30 of which is a wastewater charge so there's no avoiding that). All told I pay just over $1,00 a month, however that would increase I'm sure if I were to use the heat or air. For reference, the other units I looked at downtown ranged from $750 to $1,650, so I feel I have gotten a good deal for the price. It's not the Ritz, but its not the rundown slum that some of the other reviewers make it out to be. read more

Do not ever live in this shithole. Terrible apartments and poorly managed. The office staff have absolutely no idea how to run a place or deal with residents. The apartments are nasty and poorly insulated. My utility bill for a 1 room studio was around $200 per month! Are you fucking kidding me? You can never cool the place down or warm it up either. We have lived here just over a year now. The location is amazing. This is truly urban living with the city center as your back yard. Walking distance to Old City, Barleys, Jig and Reel and two blocks from Market Square. The lofts are spacious, maintenance is quick responding and the office personal couldn't be more kind or professional. Transferring to different floors is seamless and we always feel safe in the area. Tenants are an eclectic mix of young and old. You could easily climb into the elevator with college age students or middle-aged business professionals. They are super pet friendly and have always made us feel at home in and around the property. If I had to say anything negative it would be that you cannot use the rooftop deck (which I hear is gorgeous) due to incidents in the past and liability issues. Previous tenants we're told spoiled that opportunity. But you can always cruise across the street to Cru Bistro for outdoor delicious cocktails. I recommend Sterchi for short and long term residential living. Having many friends in lofts in and around downtown (and paying higher rent) I can tell you the views at Sterchi ARE the best in town! kas read more

Lived there for four years never really had any issues. Ice machine broke a couple of times and our dishwasher had to be replaced. Maintenance was really helpful. All my neighbors were quiet and respectful. Location was best part about the building. I will miss downtown Knoxville. Downtown Knoxville has become a pretty lively and happening place in the time I have been here. read more

My wife and I lived in an attractive two-bedroom loft in the Sterchi building for a year. The walls were thin and the building can be loud, but the location is great. We were not impressed with the staff in rental office when we moved in, but Mike, who was responsible for maintenance, was very helpful and did a great job painting our loft. Danielle, who stared working in the rental office while we were living there, was also really good to us. She even contacted me months later after we moved out about a package that had been mistakenly delivered to my old address. read more

Lived here for a couple of years and don't have much bad to say. When I first moved in the building had a higher college kid population. It was noisier and a little dirtier in the common areas. It has leveled off now and has a good mix of residence. Never had any maintenance issues and the office has always been responsive to questions I had. Love the location, character of the building and the views..... I think a lot of the bad reviews were from a time when the building was predominately inhabited by college kids. read more

I rent a one bedroom here as a corporate apartment and everything has been great. I'm disappointed to see the other negative reviews, and it was a little worrisome when I first started looking in the area, but I am so glad I gave Sterchi a chance. Everyone in the leasing office is super helpful (Connor and Kayla have helped me a lot), and the maintenance guy is very nice and efficient (I only had one issue with the sink when I first moved in, and it was fixed the same day). The building is close to everything - great restaurants and walking distance to Market Square. I pay my rent on time, so maybe the other guy is right about the negative reviews. read more

Pretty apartments but poorly managed. Definitely no where close to the "South's Finest Apartments" * The apartment was very dirty when we moved in even though we had to pay a $150 non refundable cleaning fee. The last tenets pet hair was all over the loft, dirty walls (that Sterch refused to clean/repaint), moldy refrigerator, and filthy floors. Sterchi had the loft cleaned again after we moved in but it wash still very frustrating since all of our furniture and boxes were in the way. * The air conditioner flooded our living room 3 times before it was repaired correctly. * Sterchi lost our $1600+ deposit and blamed us for not paying. They finally found the check and cashed it 3 months later without telling us. * Sterchi described the lofts as 75% professionals and 25% students (my wife and I are professionals). I would say it's the other way around at 25% professionals and 75% students. It can be loud at night and on the weekends. * The dryers in the onsite laundry facility do not work properly. It's $1.50 to wash and $1.00 to dry. Typically you have to divide your wash load into 2-3 dryer for it to dry in one cycle. * They shut down the roof top deck because one of the immature tenants threw a chair off the deck. This was a really nice selling point for us that we now do not get to use. * It's been over a month since we put in a maintenance request and they have still not repaired our problem. * Sterchi management is supposed to deliver our parking passes to our mail box every month but we always had to pick it up at there office. Sterchi Lofts is a great location and gives a true loft feel but be warned it's not a well run complex. Anyone else have any issues? read more

Flexible and friendly office/mgmt staff, maintenance staff are helpful and prompt, utility bills high, but that is to be expected w/ all concrete and huge original windows. Let us paint w/o fee or re-paint, so sweet about our dog, great location, parking not bad on the street. Prices pretty fair for the downtown area.For most part (aside from holidays and normal weekend hours) relatively quiet. I would highly recommend living here! read more

When the Sterchi Lofts opened in 2002 they were some of the finest lofts but they do no longer tout the building as being "the South's finest" simply because so many newer, higher-end lofts have been constructed since then. The Lofts continue to be the most popular lofts in downtown Knoxville and they are a great value in a superb location. We rented a two bedroom unit in the building two years ago for $1,150 and we have no plans on leaving. The buiding has a real sense of community and the building stays full for obvious reasons. The management has always been professional and courteous and the maintenance is outstanding. Too bad there are some unrealistic reviews from two and three years ago. There have never been any pigeons in the ductwork, that incident was from a dog scratching the floor in the unit above his or her unit. And, the utility bills are high in the summer but they are low in the winter - the building is the only legit residential high-rise in dt knoxville and it faces West, heat rises, arrghh! Fact is the sunsets viewed from the Sterchi building are unparalleld as it has a virtually unencumbered view directly to the West. My neighbors moved here from another loft dt (no need to sling mud) into Sterchi because the other building was much more expensive and their management did not respond as quickly as Sterchi (practically always within 24 hours). Sterchi is not the Ritz but it continues to be the best deal that my roomate and I have found in dt Knoxville. read more

I'm a big supporter and fan of Sterchi Lofts. I am a current resident and have been there for almost a year now. I usually don't do reviews but didn't like the negatives reviews I saw so I decided to give my opinion. I absolutely love the layout of the rooms. I started out in a 2 bedroom and another friend loved our place so much that he wanted to move in so we are now in a 3 bedroom. There's a positive right there - many leasing offices don't let you out of your current lease to move to a bigger/smaller apartment. Well these guys do and it was no hassle at all. They even reduced our first month's rent without being prompted. They are super pet friendly. They are very well kept and maintained. If there is a problem, it's usually fixed within a day or two. It's cleaned daily it seems like. The people in the leasing office as well as the maintenance and cleaning staff are beyond nice and kind. They do their best to make you feel welcomed and appreciated as a tenant. There are all sorts of different tenants in the building which makes for a nice balance in my opinion. I'm a young professional working downtown. I have one roommate who attends UT and the other works. In the building you have younger couples, families, college students, and young professionals. One of my favorite parts of being a part of Sterchi and downtown is meeting new people. I meet someone new every week. The atmosphere of Sterchi and downtown Knoxville is like none other. There is always something going on somewhere. Before you know it, it's First Friday time again on Gay Street. The list goes on why I enjoy living in Sterchi. Of course there are some faults but no place is going to be perfect. For the price, Sterchi is by the best place to live downtown for any age. It has the best views and is the most convenient to the Old City, Market Square, and the interstate. There is even a workout room and laundry machines offered at cheap rates. My parents worried about me being downtown and being around crime. Well, they have definitely changed their minds because I rarely see or hear of bad crime around this area. I feel completely safe in Sterchi and the staff keeps you feeling safe - they change the code to the building on a regular basis. The trash service is easy, although it will tend to smell every now and then, they do a great job at containing the smell and taking the trash out on a regular basis. Why didn't I give it 5 stars? No place is going to be perfect. I believe for something to receive a perfect score it has to truly be incomparable. All in all, I love this place. I didn't like seeing the negative comments. It's a great place to live in an amazing part of Knoxville. Again, the prices are super reasonable, the convenience doesn't compare to anything else, the people are amazing, the staff is wonderful, and I truly enjoy living here. read more

The sterchi building's downtown location is the only thing positive about these apartments. They claim to have gone for an industrial vibe, but they really mean cheap. They have not done anything to the floors or walls meaning that the (most likley) original 1920's lead based paint comes off and keeps the apartments constantly dirty and could also be a health hazard. To get a washer/ dryer in your unit is very difficult and if you do get one they are small. The lower levels of the building (where the "gym" and laundry are) are extremely foul smelling as well as the areas around the trash chutes, right next to apartment doors. They will sometimes give you parking passes, but most of the time you are out of luck. Best case you can pay 60$ additional per month for a spot, if your pass has expired you will be towed and sterchi will not vouch for you or help you out, so it's an additional 90+ dollars there too. I was once towed three times in two weeks, even after confirming the parking pass dates with the towing company and the sterchi representative. If you can look past all this prepare to clean constantly to keep the unit look decent and never have your unit look put together. Your unit will look like a warehouse and comes with no perks and a lot of hassles. I strongly do not recommend this pace. read more

This is unbelievable, I have been in the building for over a year and management told me that there were bad reviews on line for this building. Here is what I can tell you: 1. the building is being managed by the Owner; not "third party" - who better to manage your property than yourself? 2. I have never had any apartment bulding repond to maintenance issues as fast as they do at Sterchi Lofts, 3. The building is cleaned 5x per week and it is very clean. 4. The building has never had any break ins or attempted breakins and since it is the largest apartment building in downtown Knoxville, and because so many people live here in the building, it creats a very safe, community environment. 5. The views are the best in Knoxville. 6. The concrete floors, high-end cabinets and corian countertops are all above "apartment grade". 7. The management and the tenants are very friendly. 8. It was not easy to get into the building because so many people want to live in it. 9. my rent is only $1,100 for a two bedroom unit which is way less than anything else I could find downtown. I did not give it a five star rating because I know there are some newer apartments/lofts downtown which have fancier finishes (of course they cost a lot more). read more
