Ok, after all these years I finally MUST review my beloved alma mater. I can't believe I've waited…read moreso long! This experience totally changed my life for the better. Permanently. I can't truly describe what this high education meant to me at the time and even now. We're talking about the nineties, in which I graduated with a masters of music degree from this prestigious internationally recognized institution along with some of the best international talent in the classical music world! I mean to name just one, the renowned mezzo Denyce Graves was a colleague! Attending NEC is easily one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. I ended up here, as opposed to Juilliard, Eastman, or another top conservatory because I did my homework! I am a true coloratura soprano and I heard some of the best professional coloraturas in the business and inquired who their instructors had been. The same names kept popping up. Among them was the illustrious Helen Hodam, so I wrote her a letter of introduction and headed from Miami to Boston for the dreaded audition. Best possible news-She accepted me as a student and was able to help get me some scholarship funding. I still can't believe how lucky I am to achieve my dream. The things I learned and the experience I was exposed to can't be measured. I've sung professionally ever since and the technique lasts forever. Also, the closest friendships with even my talented BFF last to this day. Miss Hodam has sadly passed on, but the tradition continues on. I couldn't be prouder to hail from the great oldest free standing conservatory in the US. Thank you, NEC. May you stand throughout the next millennium!

Back in the day, we were in Boston almost every weekend seeing my sister in law who was a student…read morehere. I've sat through a few student performances and saw others on the Green T line. It was and still is one of the favorite places for students to practice and pick up some extra cash. LOL I undestand, Government Center was one of the most profitable. Since then, depending on what city we lived in, we have always found some alum. Many were church organists, but some were voice majors who were paid section leaders and fill-ins on Sundays with the choral. It makes you appreciate how successful graduates of NE Conservatory become in life. Nice!

I hired 4 lyrical dancers from Urbanity Dance to perform freestyle solos as part of a surprise…read moreflash mob proposal for my partner, and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. The dancers were super professional, dressed elegantly, and really breathed life into the song that the orchestra (hired from a separate company) played. I paid a flat rate per dancer, which included the performance and 50 minutes of rehearsal time before the proposal to give the dancers a chance to rehearse with the orchestra since they had not worked together before; Urbanity Dance was worth every penny and then some! The final performance was exactly what I had envisioned, and I especially appreciated that the dancer who performed last (Joy) finished her solo with a "lyrical invitation" for my partner and I to follow her to the predetermined proposal spot - this aligned perfectly with the music as it was fading out, and allowed for perfect photography/videography coverage - plus the two of us were in such a daze as everything was happening that we definitely needed the clear guidance Joy provided. Big big thank you to my POC, Cayley, and each of the dancers who made this possible: Genny, Katie, Haley, and Joy.

I loved my years at Diane's School of Dance. I danced here for fourteen years and truly loved it…read morethere. Diane's shows are very professional and it's clear how much hard work goes into them. I find that a lot of studios in the area are not nearly as polished as this studios. All the costumes are gorgeous and eye catching. The songs always fit the age group and the dances are to skill level. During her shows she keeps dancers backstage with volunteers and parents rotate who stays backstage. I've seen other studios were dancers come back and forth from the audience between dances which is just poorly planned. Diane really puts on a show she makes all of the backdrops by hand and with a different theme each year. She also does fun finale number with all the dancers where everyone is together! The best part about dancing at Diane's is the family feel. All of the girls get so close over the years and with parent volunteers you know people are committed to the studio. I still go back and help at shows and I left the studio 6 years ago to go to college. I loved Diane's School of Dance and hope for many more girls to enjoy their time there over the years!

This studio was recommended to my wife for our 2 daughters when we moved to the area. We were…read moresurprised that the studio is in a house when we went to the open house to check it out. I can't imagine dance classes in the space. It is fairly small with very low ceilings and the floor is just a tile. Not a dance floor. My girls have been dancing long enough for me to know this isn't safe flooring to dance on. I was very concerned for injury. Needless to say we found another studio in the area that did have the proper ceiling height, proper dance floor and is a good size to learn in. I would have to recommend against sending anyone to dance on that floor. Just look at the space and environment your child before going on what seems a popular choice. I am surprised that with the supposed "popularity" it supposedly has that they haven't invested into a better facility for their students.

I attended the Brookline Chorus performance on November 20th entitled "Motets & Chansons." I was…read moreflabbergasted at the $25 ticket price; I've never attended a choral performance where tickets were that expensive, particularly when one can attend free performances by the New England Conservatory at Jordan Hall. Additionally, up to the day of the performance, the "buy tickets" link on the Brookline Chorus site was surreptitiously hidden, giving the impression the concert was free (until we arrived and saw ticket prices tacked to a sign outside the church). Anyway, rip-off pricing aside, the concert was a collection of traditional madrigals with some contemporary pieces thrown in. It was a rather dull selection, with little variation or energy, and there was an irritating amount of unnecessary narration between songs. Nonetheless, there were some amazing voices amongst the group, and the members are undoubtedly very talented. I only wish they'd had a better repertoire for this concert.
