My mom is an interior decorator, and has been doing business in Santa Fe for upwards of twenty years. She has been in and out of here many times, both purchasing and consigning pieces. Recently she had to go into an assisted living facility due to early onset dementia. Now as an interior designer, she of course had a lot of nice things herself, including a huge collection of green pottery which wasn't necessarily cheap, as she had sourced it from Bolivia, Peru, and various places in Europe. There were about 18 to 20 pieces of it. Because she had done business with the owner so frequently, she said we should let him consign the pottery. Now my three sisters and I live in different states, none of which include New Mexico. At the time of this occurring at Stephen's, I was out of the state, but my sisters said they explained that my mom was moved into an assisted living facility with early onset dementia starting to set in, and so she wanted to consign these good with him. He told them he was sorry to hear that, and he happily agreed to take the pieces and anything else we wanted to give him as he knew she had nice taste. He also said he would help price them out as my sisters we not sure what they were worth. (I on the other hand am aware of what they are worth). They also discussed how to get some other things to him as they were all going to have to leave town in a few days. Here's where it gets interesting. A week after my sisters left town, Stephen called one of them and told her that they didn't have room for the pottery, and it was taking up too much space. He said that he would be willing to give us $300 for the pottery, or we needed to come get it within the next week. He said that if we didn't it would belong to him by default because he was telling us he couldn't consign it any longer. So this happens exactly a week after he agreed to take it into his shop. A week after my sisters all left town. He did this to my mom, who he's known and done business with for years, who now knows has dementia. And this pottery is literally worth thousands of dollars. Like well above 10K. I was so pissed that I told my sister to tell him that it wasn't a problem, we would pick it up. I then left Florence, Arizona and drove 8 hours up to Santa Fe to be there two days later when he opened. I had my wife and a friend of hers with me, and boy was he shocked when we started pulling all of the pieces out of this store. I already had a storage unit rented for all the stuff I had cleared out of my parents house when we moved them into assisted living, and I don't think he expected us to make a sudden trip out there to take it out of his store rather than just letting him buy it off of us for peanuts. I guarantee if we sold it to him those green clay pots would have shiny new price tags the very next day. When we showed up at his store he quickly doubled his offer to $600 but then made himself scarce when I told him to pound sand. He tried to take advantage of every angle of the situation. It really just upsets me to think that here is a guy who my mom considered a friend, or at least an honest person she used to do business with, and he tried to take advantage of her like that. The next time I am in Santa Fe I'll have to take a look in some of the other consignment shops in town, because I'm sure I'll find his conscience in one of them. read more

If you're a collector of ANYTHING, GO! If you have an appreciation for great design finds, GO! If you are furnishing an apartment, a house, or even a hotel, GO! Before you go anywhere else, go here because they have everything you want and a ton of things you didn't know you wanted that you will be unable to live without once you discover them. The prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly and the service is devoted but not obtrusive. I left with a lovely stone bust I can't wait to make part of my home at a price I truly couldn't refuse. Very strange, conflicting experiences here - my husband and I came in here a few weeks ago and had an awesome chat with a man who we think was the owner or at least a manager about a couch we were interested in. We spoke for about 30 minutes and he was so kind! We then mentioned we needed a fireplace grate and he said we should come back for the Mother's Day sale and buy one and specifically mentioned we could take it home and try it out and then return it if it didn't work out. So! We come back today and they tell us again, hey, try it out and if it doesn't work you can return it. We get it up to the register and then are suddenly told before we make our way up to purchase it that actually we can't get our money back and we could only get store credit if we brought it back. I said even a half hour to test it out would be amazing since we live a couple of blocks away and the salesperson ignored that and instead told us that actually someone else saw it up at the register and was already interested. It made us feel sick so instead of enjoying our time there we said they could sell it to the other interested party and we left. We don't want to come back again because it was such an awkward experience. :( sad to miss out on a local neighborhood business but luckily there are other stores like it nearby. Stephen's recently held an estate sale for my business, The Madeleine Inn, which ended up shutting down after 24 years due to Covid. Closing the business, which was always so near and dear to my heart, was a rather traumatic experience. That being said, Stephen and his crew did an incredible job and made the liquidation of furniture as painless as possible for me. They took care of every single detail, were courteous and kind, unobtrusive, and most professional. They followed all Covid protocols, ensuring the safety and well-being of all concerned. We've been regular customers for several years but recently we put a hold on a table after being quoted the price. the next day when we paid the owner said that the employee misquoted the price. We settled on a compromise price and paid. But when calling to coordinate pick up, the employee accused us of lying about the quoted price and threatened us. Will never shop here again. read more

This consignment gallery has been around a long time - long before Santa Fe was the place to go for southwestern style. My family used to buy and sell furniture and other "goodies" here for many years. They have survived most of the tourist turmoil over the last 20 years because they have stuck to the premise of only accepting and selling quality, not quantity. They do not limit themselves to "southwestern, re: Santa Fe Style" items. They do limit their merchandise to gold standard, real wood and real quality. I doubt if you will find anything made out of pressed wood in this place. The shop is large and full of wonderful furniture and other items that you won't find anywhere else in Santa Fe. One-of-a-kind. It is on the other end of the spectrum from Jackalope - where you are overwhelmed with thousands of colorful and inexpensive items. Both have their place, you just have to decide what you want your "place" to look like. If you are looking to furnish a house or apartment in Santa Fe and you don't want new and don't want WalMart, Stephens is the place to go. Right on the crazy busy Cerrillos Road next to an industrial machine rental place is an unassuming building chock full of nice furniture, artwork, and weirdo knick-knackery. This was my go-to shop for decorating my house when I lived in SF. I could spend hours picking over all the different items. Yes, it can be hit or miss. You'll find gross naive-art dog portraits next to excellent framed prints. It takes some work to find the gems. And it's a very large space. But there are some winners. Sometimes I've managed to get some wiggle room on the prices but not many times. And the prices are sometimes a bit too much Examples of what I've bought here over the years: Signed and numbered Henry Moore lithograph (yes really) Framed Toulouse-Lautrec poster Excellent framed Fernand Leger poster heavy wood mid-century lamp leather-covered photo album from a librarian's trip to England for George VI's coronation lovely early 20th century burlwood secretary lemonade set with small glasses and pitcher The guys who work there aren't super polite and it has that weird musty old-stuff smell. Since moving to Santa Fe, we have been doing all of our furniture shopping at Stephen's, either in the gallery, or at one of his great Estate Sales. The whole staff is knowledgeable, and ready to physically help or just answer questions. The prices are fair, and if I want to make a reasonable offer ("reasonable" being the operative word), they will listen. We have bought everything from Persian rugs to sofas to paintings to Opera records! If it is interesting, they sell it. As a new person in Santa Fe, I needed basically everything for my home. When I arrived at Stephen's, I was shocked to find so many things that matched my taste and were well-priced for the high quality items. Stephen and his professional team made this experience extremely pleasant. While Stephen has vast knowledge about their stock, his staff also are very helpful. At an estate sale, I was extremely impressed with Stephen's ability to pause and answer my detailed questions amidst the chaos of large number of other shoppers. They even agreed (for a reasonable fee) to deliver the items to my home. As far as what I purchased, after choosing a few beds and some art at their consignment store, they told me about an estate sale at the home of an architect with impeccable taste (a frequent occurrence that can be tracked on their website - stephensconsignments@zianet.com). In the end, my combined store and estate sale purchases fully furnished two bedrooms, in addition to some signature pieces of ceramics and a few paintings. One of my favorite places in Santa Fe! From furnishing my child's room many years ago, to refurnishing it more recently and replacing worn-out living room furniture, Stephen's is my go-to place for unique, well-crafted and interesting pieces--as well as unusual gifts (those fantastic old telephones! That strange wooden gargoyle!) But it is more than that. Stephen's staff is kind, helpful, extremely knowledgeable and go the extra mile to assist and inform visitors. Rarely find something great. Have to sort through lots of junk. Maybe it's okay for some people, but I'm used to East Coast and West Coast treasures. Every so often (once per 2 years or so) there's a piece worth looking at. But the prices are way too inflated. I've compared it to other places on the net for the same things and the net has much better prices. read more

Recently visited this establishment...DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. The inventory is poor quality and over priced. Even after 40 minutes of digging there was little that could excite even the least discriminate buyer. The layout of the furniture was horrible, everything was dirty, the lighting poor and there was a smell. Although employees were present no one offered help. The man behind the counter, I assume was the owner, was one of the rudest people I have ever encountered in my life...and I am almost 50. i visit here every other week or so and have made several purchases. stephen is a super guy, friendly, helpful and easy on the eyes.....love his silver hair! i do have to say there is another guy who's not so great. but as long as i find what i want, at a price i want to pay, i'm happy. i'm not crazy about the formal music, but i don't have to be there eight hours! all in all, i'm a big fan and will continue to shop there. read more

As far as resale shops go-its OK. But, in Santa Fe, where bad customer service is legendary and expected, this place wins the blue ribbon. Just made another purchase at Stephen's today. Once again, I scored for a necessary for the rental house I've just moved into. I've had consistently good luck finding a range of furniture...end tables, hutch, a very charming red lacquer Chinese chest, an Italian buffalo leather sofa at a crazy price and so on. This is not a slick showroom, but an industrial grade usually packed series of rooms with everything under the sun at every price point. Don't expect a polished, upscale decorator's display salon. But come prepared for the hunt which sometimes pays off and sometimes not. But hey! that's part of the fun...and I've had nothing but extremely pleasant and accommodating dealings with the staff. Incredibly rude owner ruined this place. Over the years, we stopped at Stephen's when in Santa Fe, buying occassional art, furniture. Well not anymore! After leaving the Rancho de las Golondrinas Children's Celebration at 4pm, we went to Stephen's and arrived at about 4:20. We walked the entire store, found a rustic round dining table, a pine bedside table, and one other item. At 4:50pm, my husband asked the owner Gary to look at the round table with him. Gary immediately says he will take $400 instead of $465 for the table. We weren't even asking for a lower price. My husband wanted to ask what kind of wood it was made out of, whether the two pieces (pedestal and top) would seperate etc. I asked if they run a truck to Albuquerque. Gary got huffy. It is too expensive. It costs $200 for an Albuquerque delivery. I said, "I was just asking. Some places do." He went on. "I am not American Home Furniture. And the city has raised the minimum wage to $12/hr." I said, "No problem. It was just a question." My husband asks him to see if he thinks the table will fit in our vehicle (a mini-van). He seems frustrated. I offer to measure for it. We both go to the car. He is almost immediately saying no way. I say I think that it would fit diagonally. He says, you just need to get a truck and come back. I say, well we have one and could do that. We wanted to see if this would work first. He was negative, confrontational, and rude. So I tell him that I haven't appreciated how rude he was being to us. He says that we shouldn't have looked around for two hours and decided right before closing that we want to buy something. I say we haven't been here two hours. He says, yes you have and I can look on my video camera and prove it to you. Um.OK. Crazy! I ask who the owner is and he says that he is the owner. I am shocked. He says he has an appointment at 5:10 and has to go. So at 5:03 we were leaving. I would have preferred that he tell us upfront that he was closing and couldn't help us (even thought it was 4:50) than to have had the treatement we received. I will never step foot in the place again. It was embarassing in front of my children and there are too many other options. read more

I would not return for love nor money. My sister is furnishing her new home out of stated and came to Santa Fe to buy furniture for not only her home, but her guest house. Because I live here, I have been forwarding photos from different stores that would have large Spanish Colonial items that would work in all the different rooms. I have also been furnishing my home here in Santa Fe and found several large items for my home.My sister made her purchase of one large item and was going to buy several more to be shipped within a few days. We arrived at the store were we were greeted with a very rude owner screaming about how the piece would not fit on the truck and how he had struggle to get the piece out to the front of the store and he was not going to end up in the hospital with a hurt back. Wow! He is in the furniture business, but hates to handle furniture. He was slinging a tape measure around and making a scene in front of my family and his own customers. I told him to "knock it off" several times and at that point we decided to get the money back from the purchase and to cancel the other purchases. This guy should never deal with the public and anyone who deals with him will soon see that he is an arrogant idiot. Run! read more
