I met with him recently for a prolonged case of plantar fasciitis. he immediately x-rayed my foot and agreed that's all it was gave me some great exercises and Cortizone shot. ​I am writing this to encourage anyone considering surgery with Dr. Tocci to strongly consider getting a second opinion, as my experience felt more like a sales pitch than a thorough clinical evaluation. ​Clinical Findings: During my initial visit, the Physician Assistant indicated that my symptoms were very likely hamstring-related and that a meniscal cause was very unlikely. Notably, my meniscal tests during the physical exam were negative. ​However, during the follow-up, the surgeon focused completely on a horizontal meniscal tear identified on the MRI--a finding that is usually degenerative and often incidental or asymptomatic in nature. ​Omitted Information: Other relevant MRI findings were not disclosed. After requesting a copy of the MRI report myself, I learned there was also a semimembranosus (hamstring) tendon tear. This issue is not treated surgically, yet it aligned perfectly with the PA's initial clinical assessment. ​This lack of disclosure regarding alternative explanations left me feeling that the focus was more on scheduling a procedure than on fully exploring the correct diagnosis. I would strongly encourage others to review their imaging reports personally and obtain a second opinion before proceeding with surgery. read more

After spending the better part of a year in pain and being told that I had plantar fasciitis by another doctor I came to Dr. Tocci who, upon examination thought that it was possible that it was either plantar fasciitis or tarsal tunnel syndrome. He first tried an injection that would indicate plantar fasciitis, but when it failed to work he gave me a different injection that proved the problem to be tarsal tunnel syndrome. I am no longer in any pain and wished I had come to Dr. Tocci sooner! I am a Kaiser member. The doctor I was seeing had me in crutches for 8 1/2 weeks non weight bearing, and wanted me non weight for another 4 to 6 weeks. A friend referred me to Dr Tocci. He took me off the crutches immediately and had me walking in a good air boot. Two weeks after that I was in tennis shoes. He tested my foot for pain more than worrying about the X-ray . I had to finish at Kaiser with a new doctor who was similar to Dr. Tocci. I am now hiking 13 miles and my foot is doing well. Dr. Tocci is kind and goes with a modern way of treating patients. Dr. Tocci is the BEST ankle surgeon!!! Many years ago I sustained a crushed calcaneus from a fall & subsequently developed severe traumatic arthritis in my ankle. The intense pain & swelling from simply walking was so debilitating.... cortisone shots & physical therapy bought some time, but surgery was inevitable. I sought several consultation to find a surgeon to perform a subtalar fusion. Extensive research lead me to Dr. Tocci. He is an ankle EXPERT with outstanding knowledge & vast experience in performing subtalar fusion. I felt confident that he was "the one" after his detailed explanation of this procedure which included 12 weeks of non-weight bearing & up to a year for full healing. He was incredibly patient with all my questions/concerns & his calm, caring demeanor was very reassuring. This surgery was life changing!!! I went from daily severe pain to zero pain!!! I'm back to unlimited walking...even hiking & walking on uneven surfaces like the beach with no difficulty. First and foremost, Dr. Tocci is extremely caring and compassionate and has great bedside manner. He will take all the time in the world to answer your questions and explain every detail to you. The one thing I didn't appreciate was that he brought his own person judgements to work, which as a medical profession you are not suppose to do (I'm a nurse). He was unaccommodating to my specific needs because of his personal trauma. That was frustrating because I was in so much pain from shattering my ankle and dislocating my foot, and he would not accommodate my pain. His heart was in the right place, he did not want any of his patients becoming addicted to pain killers, but at the same time I was in EXCRUCIATING pain with my unstable fracture. I had to have surgery 2 weeks after fracturing my fibula and tibia because they needed the swelling to go down. The whole time I was in the cast, I could feel my bones slipping to the sides and cutting into my flesh constantly. I couldn't get comfortable and I couldn't get any pain relief. So the day of surgery comes and we had agreed on giving me a nerve block in my leg so that I would not wake up out of surgery to the excruciating pain of having a plate with 5 screws drilled into my fibula and having 2 VERY long screws drilled upward into my tibia. Well the nerve block never happened. I woke out of surgery and I cannot describe the pain I experienced. The pain was off the scale and 20 times worse than when I broke it (and I kept coming in and out of consciousness from the pain). Every nurse that came to see me said, "I can't believe he didn't give you a nerve block." I should have been in postop for an hour maybe 2 but it took them 4 and a half hours to get my pain under control. Against my better judgement, 6 months after having the screws and plate put in, I went back to have it taken out and I made sure he and I were on the same page that I was the have a nerve block this time. He assured me. I get there on surgery day and I tell the nurses that I'm suppose to get a nerve block. Then I wake up from surgery and NOPE. No nerve block AGAIN. It has been a year and my ankle is still very painful to walk on and some days I can't even walk on it. The cast they put on me deformed my foot so now I have no arch and when I walk, it's like I have a flipper for a foot. It just flops on the ground with each step I take. I feel like I have one human foot and one duck flipper. He gets 2 stars for good bedside manner. read more

This orthopedic office is run like a well oiled machine; very fast and efficient and streamlined, which makes me a happy girl. I completely trusted Dr. Tocci and Charles Stewart. Thank you, Dr. Tocci. I haven't felt this good in over 10 years. I had foot pain for well over 10 years which substantially increased in severity. Before I saw Dr. Tocci, I had 12 cortisone injections in my toes then alcohol injections all in one year. My toes were black and blue from all the shots. I was told I have a nerve problem and the nerves in my feet had to be cut. Soon a muscle in my calf looked as if a baseball lodged under my skin and the pain was incredible. I couldn't walk. I came to see Dr. Tocci for another opinion. Dr. Tocci suggested I insert the ballet dancer pad into my shoe and to my surprise, the toe pain dissipated almost immediately. Within a few days my calf pain also dissipated. NO SURGERY was necessary. Dr. Tocci did, however, inform me that down the road, when I'm ready, he could surgically fix my toe by fusing it and realigning the 2nd and 3rd toes for better balance. Dr. Tocci never pushed me toward surgery. He said I would know when I'm ready. It has been three years using the ballet dancer pad so I decided it is time to be able to walk without the insert so I can walk barefoot and enjoy the pool without pain. March 2013 - my husband met with an accident where his foot was severely injured. The doctor who saw him soon after ER - straight off said he would be losing his foot. We obviously could not accept it. We are the fortunate ones to have doctors in the family and so had the luxury of being introduced to Dr. Stephen Tocci. I still remember the day when he first walked into the room in the hospital exuberating positive energy. I got this strong feeling that my husband was in good hands. Dr. Tocci took time to go over the situation with us, laid the whole thing in front of us, promised us nothing, and stated we have a long road ahead and that we have to take one step at a time. He told my husband not to be disheartened and that both he and my husband would be team mates for some time and work together on that foot!! In spite of not making any promises my gut feeling was that Dr. Tocci can save my husband's foot. Seven months later - my husband is walking on that foot !! I had a Bunion surgery in September of 2016 that went horribly wrong.I have been in chronic nerve and bone pain ever since, along with having a repair surgery (to take out the broken pins in my toes). I have been walking in a boot for 14 months. Needless to say the quality of my life has diminished greatly. I should add that the first two surgeons were Podiatrists, not Orthopedic Surgeons. Mistake #1. The repair surgeon told me I would need another surgery or my foot would never get any better. My friends and family Urged me to go to an Orthopedic Surgeon, and Dr. Steven Tocci's name kept coming up. I had a consultation and , at first he did not jump to surgery. He wanted to be thorough and take conservative steps. We tried cortisone injections..... Nothing. He then suggested surgery and walked me through 1) Exactly what and where the real problem was, 2) explained exactly how he would correct it and 3) gave me (Finally! ) a realistic picture of how long it would take my foot to heal. I am two weeks post op and although I'm still in pain, I can See how different my big and second toe look.
