Also it has a wide array of contemporary art. The parking may be difficult but it's definitely worth a look. They have an email list that shows introduces you to underground artists and events going on in their gallery. It's a laid back atmosphere. Too bad it's a small space. Celebrating women artists and creators the dual museum/store features all women artists (go figure) with many of them local. The gallery celebrates Texas women artists as well as women artists in general, two subjects that have vastly been overlooked for centuries upon centuries by art circles. I've discovered remarkable talents such as Lisa Ludwig and Sarah Lasley through a show called "Sugarcoated" back in May, which, pointing back to point #1, served pink champagne, frosted animal cookies and doughnut holes instead of the stuffy wine and cheese fare more typically associated with a gallery opening. 3. They encourage new talent, giving several opportunities a year to participate in showings alongside relatively established artists. For $40 you can join as a friend of the organization and have four images of your own art included in their online slide registry project. I believe there is a discounted rate for students and educators. 4. The giftshop kicks ass. Can I say ass? Most of it is tangible, practical art made by local artists or women artists elsewhere. Some of it is less than practical, such as the felt orange bird with pink feathers spewing out of the tail I purchased last Saturday. There's a fantastic selection of books on women artists and some really unique jewelry. Why would you buy anything from a department or corporate store again with such quality, and the money going directly back into the hands of the lady that made them?

Turrell is a great living artist and this is my favorite of his works. Plus, the benches inside are heated. It's also really beautiful when rain is falling through the oculus. The light show starts at a different time every night according to the time of sunset. It is about an hour and 5 minutes long. You have to walk onto the roof of the student activity center at UT Austin to find it, but someone will be there to check you in and answer questions. The light show is free but it fills up so I recommend making a reservation online.

I was really sad to have missed his exhibit…read moreat LACMA, so when I heard they had installed a new one at UT, it immediately got on my list to visit. We are blessed to have 2 installments in Houston and another in Austin. This one is on the 3rd floor of the SAC (student activity center). It is open to the public, and does not require an ID to enter. When you get to the 3rd floor just make a right and walk outside onto the rooftop patio area. They do have reservations online, but there isn't anyone there to take them. Just like many of the other exhibits, you are there to observe the sky. It usually is very peaceful and quiet. But you are more than welcome to take pictures. Come as close to sunset as possible if you want to see the many colors of the sky along with the interior lighting.

Inside, you'll find spray paint, paint markers, stickers, prints, and cool urban apparel for purchase, all of which features the work of our local Austin street artists and often has a motivational, "Keep Austin Weird," or "Austin Pride" kind of message. Chances are that if you have noticed any impressive new mural or live street art event around town (such as at the X Games, ACL Fest, SXSW, FunFunFun Fest, East Austin Studio Tour, or the Long Center lawn) over the past 4 years, SprATX was involved. Their artists have also done work for most of the Alamo Drafthouse locations and numerous corporate clients around the city. As if that weren't cool enough, SprATX is also the creator of #ATXFreeArtFriday https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/atxfreeartfriday/, a weekly art scavenger hunt in which artists of all levels (from hobbiests to professionals) hide their work (stickers, canvases, screenprints, sculptures, textiles, anything goes) throughout the city. The artist posts clues on Instagram and waits for a lucky treasure hunter to find the stash. The finders post their "I found it!" reactions online, tag the artist and #ATXFreeArtFriday, and the cycle continues. Follow @atxfaf_official and the hashtag on Instagram if you want to join the game. The diverse 30+ member collective includes amazing local street scene artists like ZUZU, Roshi K, G52, Truth, Lucas Aoki, and Drib, whose works you've likely viewed all over town. The collective also serves as an incubator for talent around the country through their Artist Exchange Program, which pairs artists from Austin and other cities to co-create murals which are then created and revealed in the partner artist's city. It was a relief to find a framing shop in Austin that delivered high quality custom framing service…read morewith reasonable pricing. My previous experience custom framing was that anything remotely close to high quality will cost a small fortune, and the primary way to save money is to go with non-solid wood frames, non-museum quality glass, and to cut more corners, so to speak. I took a custom-sized print to Aleksander's and Jo Dean was a spectacular help in deciding on the right frame, matte and glass combination, and she was happy to answer my detailed questions about her framing process as well. I have been very satisfied with the finished product (with solid wood and museum-quality glass) which came in around 1/2 the price quoted at Fast Frame, and plan to return with future additional artwork in need of custom framing.

Yard dog has been taking care of our yard for over a year. They clean up our leaves from…read moreartificial turf. Being home a few times when they come, I was able to see part of the crew will pick up their leaves, but one guy will blow a good amount of leaves into the street. Guess we should have been apologizing to our neighbors, since our leaves likely land in their yard after a big gust! They no longer care for our yard due to pulling up my perennial bulbs around my trees in raised beds, & pulling my Turks Cap which was purposefully planted in my beds. They also have twice pulled up all the wild flowers I planted on the side of the house. Perhaps the work crew have no gardening experience, so they do not know how to recognize weeds from wanted plants. I called to inquire and give the feedback on good plants being pulled up. The gentleman who first answered the phone offered no apology & simply said explained that they may have been thinning Turks cap, bc it's invasive. What?? No. I explained it was a small plant and when it was removed, their was a perfect circle where anyone could deduce it had been purposefully planted. JD called me back after I left a message, and his response to my feedback was maybe I needed to find someone else to do my yard. No apologies, or forward solutions to prevent the same mistakes from occurring. I recommend you use them for your leaves as long as you don't mind a good deal if your leaves going into the street, and your flowers being pulled, all the while you will end up going behind them to pull the weeds from the artificial turf and from the sidewalk.

Scarily tempting…read more I've had a surprising number of articles framed by Tom and the attentive staffers at Artworks, personal items and also prints, photographs and art in my capacity running a briefing center at Tivoli and they have never disappointed. They even shadow-boxed and framed my old license plate without batting an eyelash. The framing is done artfully, stylishly, quickly and always ready on time. The suggested colors for matting and molding are always pleasing to the eye, and the end result is an article that looks just as it should on any wall. There is a complete restoration department as well, for old photos or paintings that need a little TLC. Their framing work is not inexpensive, but it is always perfect and worth it. But the gallery of art and artisanal crafts which comprises the well-lit space on West 6th is killing me. It's impossibly beautiful stuff, and increasingly hard to get out of there without spending a small fortune. There is even a room full of art deco and period barware. Crystal, blown glass, woodcraft, metal sculpture, mirrors, art glass--carefully chosen and curated, it's like a museum of fine craftwork and I hate it--it's that good. The nefarious plan has you in the store, waiting for a few minutes as your framed work is produced from out back when something, invariably catches your eye. Damn. I'm wise to you Artworks. I'm keeping my shades on and staring at the wall of frame samples and leaving with my wallet intact.

I finally stopped in after a Whole Foods bacon run (3 lbs of thickest-cut…read moreApplewood, baby) to find that Artworks still has fantastic collections of stemware and some barware, as well as reasonably-priced, interesting art, in a sunny, beautiful room. I remember first coming here in the late 90's to frame an etching from my trip to Venice and receiving a student discount. At their suggestion, it was framed between two panes of glass to excellent effect, not something I'd have considered myself. Today I nearly bought a gorgeous snifter for $36, or a set of cordial glasses from the 40's for about the same. I'll be back when I have a larger apartment -- and when I again drink alcohol. I've uploaded a photo of the bronze shelf-fish I bought here over 10 years ago.
