Absolutely beautiful place to camp, boat tour by Alex was great. Several gator and wildlife sightings!!!

Trembling Earth Nature Trail

This park is located right smack in the middle of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. We were very impressed with their offerings. They have plenty of space for RV and tent camping. We rented one of nine cabins they have available at $120 per night. The cabins are extremely nice considering how far out in the wilderness you are. You get two bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen with stove, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, and refridgerator. You get pans, coffee mugs, plates, glasses, silverware, and more. They even have 13 channels or so of cable TV on a small screen (maybe 19 inch?). The cabins also have screened in porches. The really feel perfect in their setting. The visitor center is a short walk from the cabins. There you can rent canoes or motor boats to explore the swamp. We chose a motor boat at $25 for 2 hours. We finished 5 minutes before our two hours was up. If you have the money and time, I would recommend paying $35 for 4 hours. Billy's Island is a short boat ride from the visitor's center. It is a nice place to get out of the boat to stretch your legs. You can also take the boat up a waterway to Minnie's Lake. That's about as far as we were able to get. Our visit was in the winter (February 2010), and it was simply gorgeous! Don't let the lack of greenery keep you away at this time of year. The dark, tannin-stained water reflects the trees beautifully. We have some of the most stunning pictures from the boat ride. I've read elsewhere that this time of year is bad for wildlife viewing. That simply is not true. It is true that the reptiles will not be abundant, but the mammals and birds are busy! On our first day, we saw 11 deer, 2 raccoons, a grey fox, a juvenile red-railed hawk, turkey vultures, and countless other songbirds. The second day we saw another deer, a woodpecker (pileated I think?), and the only alligator of the trip. On the last day, we saw 7 more deer and 3 raccoons. They are out there! Another great thing about going in the winter or fall is that the crowds are either small or non-existent. We basically had the park to ourselves. It was very quiet and peaceful in the offseason. We walked out in the morning to the sound of birds chirping and a woodpecker working on a tree in the distance. In the evening, more birds and an owl hooting in the distance. Perfect. They have two trails to hike in the park - the Pine Upland Trail and the Trembling Earth Trail. The Trembling Earth Trail is a must-do! It is mostly boardwalk and located right behind the visitor's center. The Pine Upland Trail is a nice little hike through mostly pine and scrub. I spotted the grey fox during my hike on this trail. Watch for flooding there after heavy rainfall. My only disappointment was the lack of reptiles. It would have been awesome to see more alligators, some snakes, and amphibians. I did have my two year old son with me, so I am not complaining. It felt very safe this time of year with him onboard for this adventure. We hope to one day return to this park in the spring (April or May) to catch some of the alligator breeding season and the cypress trees regaining their green foliage. But we have no complaints at all. It was the perfect family vacation into the Okefenokee Swamp.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The stars are beautiful at night. We were welcomed and assisted by all staff and everyone was very helpful and friendly. We took the boat tour with Alex and we really enjoyed it. Alex was knowledgeable, funny at times, and all around a great tour guide. We also rented a boat and had a good time cruising around and looking at the scenery. We stayed in the cabins and they were very comfortable and had generally everything we needed. It was a very peaceful weekend and we enjoyed it very much.

We took our two kids here on a break from long road trip and while it's not right on 75, it's a perfect pit stop. I would recommend this to all as it's a really short hike with some beautiful views and it's free. We did not see any of the land/water wildlife while we were here such as alligators or lizards, snakes, and frogs, but we did see some beautiful birds and considering it was the dead of winter, we were happy. The boardwalk is in decent condition and you don't have to worry about a gator jumping up eating you. The tower you get to climb at the end offers great views and a nice finish to the short (approximately .5 miles each way) trip.

It was awesome to be thrust into nature in the swamp while still staying somewhat safe on a boardwalk above it. The tower at the end of the boardwalk was like the prize at the end... it was quite a climb up the stairs but the view was so worth it. The boardwalk is in need of some major repairs as there were parts where the railing had fallen over and other parts where boards were warped and/or rotted. As long as you are careful I think this is a good place to bring kids. Mine really enjoyed themselves and the bugs weren't bad. Beware of giant spiders in webs that may be at face level! We didn't see any gators but saw plenty of butterflies, dragonflies, birds, ducks, and beautiful flowers.

There were already a good amount of people and the parking lot was almost full, but there was still plenty of space for people in the springs. There isn't a lot of space to put your belongings as there aren't really any large open spaces, but people pretty much just put their stuff where they can. You can either enter the springs via some stairs that take you right to the deep portion, or you can walk around the springs and enter at a shallower section. If you do go in at the shallower section, be aware that there's quite a strong current that can be difficult to fight against to get into the deep area. I would also recommend chacos or sandals of some kind as there are a lot of rocks in the shallower end that can be very slippery. The water is VERY cold, so be prepared for that, but know that it will also feel amazing afterward and soak any body aches/pains away. The springs are one of the most beautiful swimming areas I've seen--so much beautiful nature surrounding it. If I could go there WITHOUT the loud crowds of people, it would be the most absolutely perfect spot to relax and spend a day. Even with that it was fantastic and I would 100% return.

There is one bathhouse for the campground and I did not go in it so I don't know how clean it is. The rest of the park is well maintained so I imagine the bathhouse would be too. The park offers a visitor center with a gift shop and ice cream and boiled peanuts for sale. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The park is about 20 mins from Waycross should you need to shop or grab a bite to eat. There are two playgrounds, a fitness area, many pavilions and picnic areas. There is also an area for Sunday Church service which starts at 9:30 am. They also offer cabins and cottages for rent and there are separate campgrounds for pioneer and group camping. They have a VERY large dog park! One side for small dogs and the other for large dogs. Each side offers a bench and a watering station. This dog park added an extra star to my overall rating! We enjoyed our stay here and were happy to find out we were only about 8 miles from the Okefenokee Swamp Park which is also highly recommended!

There was so much wildlife to be heard throughout the night including owls, woodpeckers, and what we think were crickets or maybe lubbers. The bathrooms and shower areas were very clean for a park/camping area. There are different trails to explore along the path to the treehouses, which we didn't have a chance to do. We suggest bringing a sheet or blanket to cover your mattresses. Each treehouse has 2 twin sized bunk beds (total of 4 mattresses). They are VERY uncomfortable, so if you need extra support, you should probably bring a mattress topper/padding. The grills were pretty clean, just need some dusting off before cooking, though, nothing out of the ordinary. Upkeep for everything was great!

Directions: Travel north on US 41, pass under I-10, turn right on NW Falling Creek Road; travel 1 mile. The park is on the right before crossing the creek. The boardwalk splits at one point for a loop that leads parallel to the creek, while the other (clearly marked Falls with an arrow) leads to overlook the falls. It's only a quarter mile hike in and you will hear the water before you see it. Rusty- dark color water flows down the creek, the limestone rock worn from the water. The forest around is lush and green. The only critters we saw was one turtle, spiders galore and a butterfly. We heard birds- but I didn't spot them. Tiny little pit stop gave me some great photo opportunities! I recommend bug spray if you are heading out!
