This place was just terrific. Diagnosed the problem, fixed it efficiently -- very friendly, competent, and easy to deal with. While I was waiting, I saw a guy come in with a complicated problem, requiring the order of a hard-to-get part. They explained to him very patiently what was needed and how long it would take to get the part and do the repair. I could see they were being perfectly honest with him. I've taken my car to this shop a couple times. I like coming here because they are very nice. However... The headlights on my car have been growing dimmer and dimmer, to the point that I have to drive on the highway with my brights on just to see. I had the headlight units replaced at another shop but the problem wasn't fixed so I took my car here. I explained the problem and after taking a look they said that there was no problem and I could maybe buy brighter bulbs. It seemed so weird to me because I thought the headlights looked cross-eyed. About a year later, this past November, I took my car in again. I said I was going on a long road trip (12 hours) and asked if they could look over the entire car to see if there might be anything that could become a problem. I also asked them again to look at the headlights because they really did seem dim and unsafe. A couple days later I picked up my car. They said there was nothing wrong with it and I was on my way. The lights were still a mess and I drove all the way through Pennsylvania at night with my brights on, hoping not to get squished by a semi. When I got to my destination a friend said I should visit her mechanic about my headlights. When I brought my car to the shop the guy at the counter stood up from his desk, looked across the lobby and out the dirty window and said "looks like the headlight unit wasn't installed properly, it's sitting a couple inches below where it should be". That was it. One day and $100 later and the headlights were fixed. Now for the fun part. Remember when I said that I asked them to check if there was anything that could become a problem on a long drive? Well, on my long drive back to NYC, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the tire blew. Check out the photo I posted. It didn't just blow, it cracked and shredded. There was very little shoulder and my car shook every time a car whizzed by. I was terrified. I finally got a tow to a repair shop and the guy said the tire was very old and it blew from dry rot. He also said I should replace the other front tire too because it was just as old. Maybe some people are more organized than me and have a tidy spreadsheet and calendar reminders for all their car maintenance. I will take some responsibility and say that I should be more on top of these things. I thought I was doing that by taking my car to a reputable mechanic and asking their expert advice and assistance. Turns out that is not the case. I've also paid these guys to change my oil and I'm guessing they haven't actually done that either. A note about the service industry: I receive a lot of inadequate repair service. Perhaps it's because I'm a woman? I really think it's because what I try to have repaired isn't fancy enough by New York standards. My car is a little older but I try hard to take care of it. I suppose this place saw my car as some old piece of junk and didn't bother to give me the service I paid for. On one hand it's dispiriting to not be treated as a valued customer. On the other hand it's infuriating, I could have lost control of my car when the tire blew and ended up in a serious accident. read more

My intention in writing my review is to share my experience and to provide feedback from a customer service perspective. It is correct that I did get the car back in less than a week, I have revised my original review to clarify that the questions, diagnosis and rates for parts (or in short, the conversation about the car) took the duration of a week, (not the actual examining of it). I do recall you mentioning that the work would not be worth it, monetarily, in the sense that repairs (averaging $1000, according to the guess/estimate) would elongate the car's life span between 6 months to a year. That may not seem 'worth it' to some, however my desire was to continue the conversation because that possibility was worth it to me. Had I received as clear a statement as you made in your Yelp response (namely, that you would 'not get involved' in the process at all), then I would have respected that. My issue comes from the fact that there wasn't a clear 'no' stated, and that our conversations about what might be possible continued throughout the week. I am also a little disappointed that there isn't anything in your response addressing the manner of professional conversation (again, from the point of view of customer service, which these Yelp reviews are for), or the way Steinway Auto didn't fully address our specific questions/concerns (as referred to in the original review). The auto shop I sought out for a second opinion gave me the comprehensive information that I had been asking for up front, (as listed in my original review as well), in an ethical, professional manner befitting business and safety standards. I would not ask a business (or anyone) to do something unethical or unsafe for me or for others. This brings me back to my original intention for bringing the car in to be repaired, which was to adhere to safety standards for both myself and others. I am grateful that you have shared your perspective, and I hope that Steinway Auto is able to take some of my experience and feedback into consideration as well, (as a customer, and to prospective customers), as suggestions on how to provide solutions when customers have a problem, and how to improve your business (and your customers' experience). It was really hard for me to find an auto repair shop in Astoria that I could trust. These guys are truly the best in town! I have had my yearly inspections done on my Honda Civic here the last two years, and both times I was taken care of very quickly. Nick is a very smart and honest guy! Today I brought my car in because one of my headlights went out and my Tire Pressure Monitoring System was not working. Nick replaced the bulb and reset the system for me. I dropped the car off before work and came by after to pick it up. Nick was also very responsive when I messaged the business asking if he could help me with the issue I was having. Last, but not least, their prices are extremely fair and they do not try to up-sell. I trust their work and I will definitely return if any other issues arise with my car in the future. That place is scam and lie specially Nick! After I saw good reviews I went repair my car A/C. Nick told me he will recharge the A/C and clean the filter first and if doesn't solve issue then check the compressor. It will cost you around $120. Later nick call me and told me issue is compressor and your bill is $129 but I need to change compressor, I decided to change compressor later and paid $144 including tax . Soon i tuned on A/C it smells bad. I asked him why filter didn't cleaned and and didn't recharged A/C I paid for that ?? He said with attitude it is Mercedese car and he didn't do anything just diagnosed it. I asked what compressor I need he doesn't know that either Nick is a liar scam with bad attitude. I paid for the things which he never done. That place has fake reviews. Usually mechanics scam you little bit but this is next level. No one should go there ever. Realized last minute we needed an overdue inspection on our 2015 Honda Civic. Messaged the business about needing an appointment or if we can just drive up. The owner was responsive to my questions and let us schedule an appointment over a message. I borrowed my mother's 04' Xterra for tailgate season. The check engine light had come on after the engine temperature intermittently overheated and only when idle and sitting in traffic. I immediately assumed it was a thermostat or radiator issue but Nick, having been told the details, correctly diagnosed it as a fan clutch issue. While doing the work, he contacted me about a seized caliper (something I had felt in the brake pedal but assumed was the pads needing replacement soon.) The truck now stops on a dime and almost as good as my sedan with 4 wheel discs! Having promised the work to be done in time for a tailgate the following Sunday, Nick came in on a Saturday and worked later than he had hoped in order to keep his promise. I had come to yelp looking for a trustworthy and honest mechanic and got just that. Someone that gives it to you straight and triages issues rather than trying to hit you with an enormous bill. What I paid for the repairs was VERY fair. It goes without saying that I'll be coming back here for all my repairs but I'll also be using the shop for my routine maintenance as well! read more

Nick and Andy are AMAZING!! They're trustworthy and do great work for a fair price. My car was at a different shop, where I was told I would need to spend $4000 to have my transmission rebuilt and it would take several days. I wanted a second opinion, so I called Steinway Auto, and Nick immediately started doing some research into the potential problem. He spent time and energy helping me out before he even knew if I'd move my car over to his shop. I moved the car over to Steinway and by 3:00 PM on the following business day, the car was fixed and ready for me to pick up. It was a broken pipe, not a blown transmission. $500 for parts, labor and tax and I was out the door. Nick and Andy saved me $3500 and a huge headache. So I've been meaning to write this for a couple weeks. My beat up Kia Sportage appeared to be on its last breath. The truck was shaking and there was a loud banging noise coming from under the hood. I didn't have a mechanic here in Astoria, so I went to Yelp, found Steinway Auto Repairs, saw the great reviews, and figured I'd give them a chance. After working with them, I came away very impressed. I left my Sportage at the shop and received a phone call a few hours later from Nick, the owner. He let me know that there appeared to be a timing belt issue and that before proceeding further he wanted me to know that it could get pricey. My impression from speaking to Nick by phone is that he was being transparent and communicating well with me. He listened to my situation, gave me some advice while discussing pros and cons. After hearing him out, I decided to have them go through with the repair, even when he let me know that it could run into the $700+ range (in the worst case scenario). Thankfully the following day I got a call from Nick letting me know that I had been lucky, that they had fixed the problem, that my car was now running great, and that my bill was $300. That sounded more than fair to me. I went later that day to the shop. Nick started my car up and I was in shock because all of a sudden my car appeared to have been brought back to life. Nick told me to drive it around for about a month and to check-in with him if there were any issues. A few days later I noticed that my car started to overheat. I went back to the shop, spoke to Nick's father, who I found to be a really cool guy. He popped the hood, started the car, and began to inspect. Literally a few minutes later he told me that he found that the fan was not working properly and that this was likely the cause of the heating problem. They took care of that and since that time (about three weeks ago) my car has been running great. It literally feels like such a smooth ride now. I know auto shops and mechanics are known for being shady. The opposite is true with this shop. They were honest with me, treated me with great customer service, and were actually a pleasure to meet.
