This past few weeks, I had a swollen lymph node beneath my ear drained in a local hospital - a simple procedure - and apparently the doctor punctured a vein and it swelled to three times the size it was when I came in. For two weeks I was in agony as it continued to swell while the hospital staff said "nothing we can do. It will heal eventually." This after CT scans, MRI's, everything. The swelling pressed on my ear canal, my jaw, and I looked like Quasimodo. I went to Keith Denkler in excruciating pain. In 30 minutes he drained 13 cc's of dark blood and relieved the pain - I hardly felt anything as he did it. The next day he drained another 13 cc's - and over the weekend, the massive swelling in my jaw continued to shring to 1/4 of the original side. He did it all with little or no discomfort. I've been able to work, sleep and avoid pain meds - none of which was true for over two agonizing weeks. This is a doctor who cares who knows, and should be teaching the others how to do this work. I called them, I was in their "clinic" 4 separate times - they visually say this wound. Their response was non- emergent. I am now day 3 in hospital. Day 3 of continuous antibiotics- due to this unsafe - in surgery practices. Lift and 100 cc does not look like this and now with the fluid gone they are sagging and implants infected. They will be removed in a few hours and I will have to start again with my desired lift in a year after reconstruction and recovery. Again no apology's, no email, no calls. Unfortunately, our experiences with the front desk have been consistently frustrating and seem to be getting worse. The most concerning experience occurred when my husband was diagnosed with melanoma. After receiving such a frightening diagnosis, we waited and waited for an appointment and for information about what would happen next. We were frustrated by the lack of communication and ultimately contacted UCSF, where we were able to get an appointment quickly and received a clear explanation of the diagnosis and next steps. We've had other frustrating administrative experiences as well. I handle the medical scheduling for our family because my husband has a demanding work schedule. When I called to make an appointment for him, I was told that he needed to sign a HIPAA authorization form. I asked if they could email the form so he could sign it, but I was told he had to come into the office in person just to sign it. This seemed unnecessarily difficult. More recently, before making appointments, the front desk required us to pay outstanding balances immediately--including one bill we had not even received yet. We use an HSA to pay our medical expenses, so being required to make an unexpected payment on the spot was particularly frustrating. We have stayed with Southern Marin Dermatology because we appreciate the doctors and nurses and believe they provide good medical care. But dealing with the front desk has become increasingly difficult. I hope the practice takes these concerns seriously and improves its communication, billing practices, and overall administrative experience. Good medical care deserves an equally professional and compassionate front-office experience.
