This location looks new but those inside said it wasn't a new spot? I'm not sure but it could use some help. Bathrooms were deplorable. The service is mostly non existent because they use kiosks to order. The person making shakes seemed quick but not sure how easy it would be to find a person to help if it was needed. The restaurant wasn't clean. Our table seemed to have been wiped down at some point because it had streaks on it. But also crumbs of who knows what. The sticky floor just added to the feeling of things. Food came out relatively quickly - my burger was so small that I almost couldn't find it in the bun... fries were tasty though - I guess that beef tallow works. I would not stop back here unless it was a food emergency... also, the parking lot is a mess. It's basically one way into a hotel parking lot or drive through. It's been a while since I've been to steak and staple about 2 years and I went to the one in Rosemont. I just came fro Gurnee Mills Mall since I had Martin Luther King day off and just to go window shopping. At first, I was unsure if Steak n Shake was open because the logo was taken down so I called them while I was at the mall since it was very cold on Martin Luther King's Day 2026. Well,since there's no live cashier to take your order like the other fast food chains, you have to order it on a kiosk exclusively. Unfortunately one of the kiosks which was credit only was not working correctly I'm glad it did not take payments so I went to another kiosks to order the same thing that I wanted. I ended up getting the eggnog milkshake which is exclusive for the winter season specially with Christmas holiday over. I ordered it with extra whipped cream and cherries. It was delicious. My milkshake came out first then my other order and I would have thought they would have brought it or called me at the same time with my triple cheese burger and my medium size Tallow fries. The steak triple patty cheeseburger was good it wasn't a "wow" good but it was good. Now I do taste the difference using tallow. It doesn't seem as greasy and it makes the french fries more rich in flavor. The only thing is Steak n Shake makes their fries similar to McDonald's on how they slice them. They're not thick fries or medium cut fries. One of the reasons is because I was curious how tallow tasted like. It actually is pretty good if that's how they used to make or cook french fries back in the 1950s and earlier. The reason why three stars is there's no more cashier. You have to exclusively order on the kiosk and one of the kiosks was not working properly for credit card. It took 5 minutes and I wasn't sure hopefully it did not process on the first kiosk which I thought was working. The second kiosk which says cash and credit is the one I use and it took my order. There's nobody there to help you which is what I don't like to give advice in regards to a cashier. That was the same experience I had at the Shake n Steak in Rosemont, Illinois two years ago. Yes, their food is good but their customer service seems cold or unenthusiastic. It's funny and ironic that under The entry foyer they show the staff smiling and wearing a uniform but in reality they're not even dressed with a tuxedo tie and short sleeve shirt with the CEO manager. Also they were out of napkins tonight. I had to wait and tell their staff but they seem very busy. Likewise, with the kiosk. Again the food is decently good with the new cooking the tallow fries but the customer service it's just really something that needs improvenent again.Ambience was busy in the beginning but quiet down after I walked in. Stopped in at Steak and Shake today, had to familiarize myself with the ordering process which after doing it once become very easy. The two burger hamburger with grilled onions and ketchup was delicious, along with the fries in tallow. The manager was extremely helpful and provided great service. AND IT STILL ASK FOR A TIP.you will get your own food when it is yelled out, and then stand in line for 20 minutes while people try to figure out the drink kiosk. Love that it is locally owned and operated per the sign out front but when you come inside it screams the total opposite by not having actual waitressing. I've sat here for an hour, and every single person that has come in is upset about the kiosk and the way drinks are done now. For the dining room, it's clean. But does not feel welcoming anymore because the staff does not come on this side of the aisle. No longer can you have a favorite waitress or waiter. Food is what you would expect, good as always. Just had occasion to visit this store since it reopened. Never again... and here's why. For almost 50 years it's always been a treat to go to Midwest stores in Illinois and Indiana. Always fun to sit down and have a server take your order at the table, have a personal exchange, or even go to the counter for a to-go order. Since moving to SE Wisconsin, this Gurnee location is the closest store to me. How disappointing to have to have to spend an inordinate amount of time navigating a kiosk when ordering for 4 people. We used to come here at least once a month, but life changes made this location less convenient. I happened to be passing by today and decided a burger and fries sounded good. I have to agree with other reviews, this place has gone a bit downhill. The food was solid. It's not amazing, but for less than 10 bucks a person how much quality do you expect? My Frisco melt was tasty, but the fries weren't as fresh as I would like. The real issue was the service. Like many reviewers experienced they seem to have forgotten I was there. I ultimately had to wave down a server to place my order, and there were almost no other customers. We never received placemats and had to ask for silverware as well. None of this was a deal breaker, but these are basic functions that all servers should be able to handle. Cleanliness falls by the wayside here, the bathroom was particularly grimy. This must be the slowest and most short staffed Steak'n Shake I've ever been to. The servers there were nice but it took way too long to be seated and served. I came here with coworkers right after sixflags ended because we were hungry. There was a long line and it was about a 15min wait to be seated. Around 10-15min to get our orders in and an hour to actually get our food. It was to a point where I wasn't even hungry anymore. I ordered a simple chicken tenders meal and when my food came it was cold. This place is a teen zone after 9:30 PM, seemingly filled to 80% capacity by the time we arrived. They take forever to seat you here, that is IF you get seated at all. There was no hostess to be found at the front. No greeters because everyone is busy on the floor. After 15 minutes of standing while I'm 5.5 months pregnant and still haven't been seated with a toddler in a stroller, we left to take our business elsewhere. No apologies or any kind of customer service, no eye contact (everyone seems to avoid us) and when I finally caught someone to speak to I received a reply of "we have to clean tables before we seat you", when I clearly see at least 2 booths that have been cleaned and are open. Well, clearly they are too busy for our business so we moved on to Taco Bell instead with no waits. This was my first time here and I think it was good. The fries were a touch cold and in my opinion really skinny but my daughter enjoyed them. We had the triple burger with fries for $3.99 not bad at all. The burger was hot and the I thought it was delicious, I love the extra long pickles on it. My kids loved the birthday cake shake. Wish I had gone during the happy hour where shakes are half priced. I will have to go again during the 2-4pm timeframe to get my kids some more shakes. Long story short: tasty, inexpensive food in a cramped, filthy setting. My boyfriend and I took a random trip to Gurnee, IL and passed this Steak 'n Shake. Neither of us had been in years so it was pretty obvious that would be our dinner choice on the way out of town. Both of us opted for the The Original Double 'N Cheese Steakburger 'N Fries - a steal at $3.99. I went for all toppings except the onion and was pleased with the combo. The burger had delightfully crispy edges, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the veggies seemed fresh. The fries were true matchsticks and were hot and fresh and not too salty. We also split a dark chocolate shake for $2.99. It comes in a huge glass and is a step above the fast food shakes of my youth; the ice cream isn't premium, but it seems blended and not just tapped from a machine. I didn't think the dark chocolate flavor was much different than regular chocolate syrup, but it still hit the spot. The low prices are hard to beat and the quality felt better than most big drive-thru chains. Aside from the food, pretty much everything else about this location is just awful. Here's a list: - Understaffed; long lines for takeout and to pay for dine-in but only one person at the register. - Every surface is pretty dirty and tables go a long time before being cleared. - Bathrooms are disgusting - the TP dispenser is broken so you have to pick up the roll from the floor. - Our server barely said a word to us; she just stood at the table and stared at us with her pen and pad in hand. We got no silverware aside from one spoon for our shared shake. - Again, everything is in need of a good scrub; it's enough to make me wonder what condition the kitchen is in. There was one server who was busting her butt, checking on tables she didn't have and serving as host, but other than that the two other staff people we saw didn't seem overly concerned about anything. What is wrong with this place? It used to be good eating and a fun place to go but ultimately it is just going down. I was there with family today around 4:30 pm. After waiting in an almost empty restaurant for almost 10 minutes to be seated no one ever came to take our order. We waited 20 minutes and then we got up and left. It was as if no one cared about the clients. I tried to call the attention of the waiters but no one even noticed. The problem was that we had a 3 y/o toddler that really needed to eat something quick. We will not recommend this place or go back there again. My friend took me here to get a 'suburbian' experience lol. I'm from LA and so I've never had Steak n' Shake before. We came primarily for the milkshakes because we had dinner at home, but she kept telling me how good the burgers are here, so I was very curious and wanted to try it out myself. I ordered a single cheeseburger - was thoroughly happy that for $4, I got a cheeseburger and a side of fries! The burger was smaller than I had expected, but it was really, really tasty and satisfying. The fries were thin and crunchy. I also ordered a straw-nilla milkshake - half strawberry and half vanilla straight down the middle. Absolutely amazing!! And omg for only $2.99!?!? Milkshakes are usually like $5+.. I was so happy. Although the food was great, the customer service was pretty bad. It took a while for us to be seated - it wasn't that there was no room.. it's just that no one came to get us when we walked in and we weren't sure what we were supposed to do. Additionally, the waiters never came by to take our order. Although I exchanged eye contact with many of them, no one would look at me long enough for me to get them to come over.. until eventually. I'm just going to say it - everything about coming here was horrible. This all happened on 10/20/18 at around 10:30pm. This is a wild story, but I assure you that this ALL happened and is 100% true. If I could give a negative star review, I would. We had gotten in line for the drive thru after a long day and waited 15 minutes before we even got to the speaker. Someone ended up over the speaker and told us to wait longer, keep in mind that there were cars basically bumper to bumper in front and behind us. Once we ordered, another 15 minutes later, we got in line to meet at the window. Once there, we looked in to see if there was any shortage of staff, but there were at least 5 different people working - doing tasks together that could've clearly been done by one person. We received our drinks all at separate times and after saying that part of our order wasn't in the bag to an employee, he argued with us and told us it was with us. After handing it back to him and telling him to look for our two sandwiches, he turned and went to correct our order like he should have when we first said so. We asked to speak to a manager and when we did, she acted as if everything was completely fine - not that the wait was OVER AN HOUR or that there was rude customer service or that there was clearly enough employees and was in no way understaffed to the point where a wait would be explained. DO NOT COME HERE unless you want to torture yourself. I seriously do not know why getting our food from a FAST food chain took OVER AN HOUR, but it's clear that this establishment is disorganized, dysfunctional, and flat out mismanaged. At least I can now happily say that I'll never come back there again, and I urge you to do the same. read more
