Very clean & bright location. Forgot today is National Intern Day, took my intern to Steak'n Shake. Service was exceptional, staff was focused. Food came out hot & fresh the butterfinger shake received thumbs up! The original Steak Burger lives up to its name. They do use tallow and the flavor shows. Coming back that's for sure. Healthy option. Cheers & Mangia! read more

Steak ’n Shake - Fast Food Near Me - Gurnee, Illinois

I ordered a #4 with added bacon and no pickles. The employee informed me there would be an extra charge for the bacon, which was fine. However, when I received my order, the bacon was missing even though I was still charged for it. To make matters worse, my sandwich didn't even come with ketchup. It's frustrating to pay extra for items and not receive them. Attention to detail and order accuracy definitely need improvement. read more

Taking soooooo long for the food. It took almost more than half an hour. Food looks nice however the burger was burn and dry. I asked extra tomato onion and mayonnaise for burger but all are missing. Potato tots and my french fries are so cold not even taste fresh. Bathroom is so dirty. I don't think will ever come back again. Sorry. read more

This location looks new but those inside said it wasn't a new spot? I'm not sure but it could use some help. Bathrooms were deplorable. The service is mostly non existent because they use kiosks to order. The person making shakes seemed quick but not sure how easy it would be to find a person to help if it was needed. The restaurant wasn't clean. Our table seemed to have been wiped down at some point because it had streaks on it. But also crumbs of who knows what. The sticky floor just added to the feeling of things. Food came out relatively quickly - my burger was so small that I almost couldn't find it in the bun... fries were tasty though - I guess that beef tallow works. I would not stop back here unless it was a food emergency... also, the parking lot is a mess. It's basically one way into a hotel parking lot or drive through. Spots are tight and multiple people took up 2 spots so it's ridiculous to park there. read more

Well I did like the place until I heard they were trumpets, I do not support Trump or Tesla

Went through the drive thru and was surprisingly pleased with my meal/experience! I got the frisco melt combo (number 3) with a cookies and cream shake! Everything was fresh and hot even the fries! Overall was the best meal I've gotten from a steak and shake in a while! read more

Food was awesome! I ordered a western BBQ N' Bacon Steakburger and a small fry and it was excellent! Food was ready quick which is always a plus. Minimal interaction with staff since you order via kiosk now. Lots of seating and tables were overall pretty clean. My one item for feedback is they didn't have the steak and shake fry seasoning available (which is delicious) - the only way to get it was to buy a seasoning jar full of it. read more

It's been a while since I've been to steak and staple about 2 years and I went to the one in Rosemont. I just came fro Gurnee Mills Mall since I had Martin Luther King day off and just to go window shopping. At first, I was unsure if Steak n Shake was open because the logo was taken down so I called them while I was at the mall since it was very cold on Martin Luther King's Day 2026. Well, since there's no live cashier to take your order like the other fast food chains, you have to order it on a kiosk exclusively. Unfortunately one of the kiosks which was credit only was not working correctly I'm glad it did not take payments so I went to another kiosks to order the same thing that I wanted. I ended up getting the eggnog milkshake which is exclusive for the winter season specially with Christmas holiday over. I ordered it with extra whipped cream and cherries. It was delicious. My milkshake came out first then my other order and I would have thought they would have brought it or called me at the same time with my triple cheese burger and my medium size Tallow fries. The steak triple patty cheeseburger was good it wasn't a "wow" good but it was good. Now I do taste the difference using tallow. It doesn't seem as greasy and it makes the french fries more rich in flavor. The only thing is Steak n Shake makes their fries similar to McDonald's on how they slice them. They're not thick fries or medium cut fries. One of the reasons is because I was curious how tallow tasted like. It actually is pretty good if that's how they used to make or cook french fries back in the 1950s and earlier. The reason why three stars is there's no more cashier. You have to exclusively order on the kiosk and one of the kiosks was not working properly for credit card. It took 5 minutes and I wasn't sure hopefully it did not process on the first kiosk which I thought was working. The second kiosk which says cash and credit is the one I use and it took my order. There's nobody there to help you which is what I don't like to give advice in regards to a cashier. That was the same experience I had at the Shake n Steak in Rosemont, Illinois two years ago. Yes, their food is good but their customer service seems cold or unenthusiastic. It's funny and ironic that under The entry foyer they show the staff smiling and wearing a uniform but in reality they're not even dressed with a tuxedo tie and short sleeve shirt with the CEO manager. Also they were out of napkins tonight. I had to wait and tell their staff but they seem very busy. Likewise, with the kiosk. Again the food is decently good with the new cooking the tallow fries but the customer service it's just really something that needs improvenent again.Ambience was busy in the beginning but quiet down after I walked in. Especially with the FDA implementing that vegetable oil is bad to fry french fries which is somewhat true but they could have used olive oil instead of tallow to fry french fries read more

Overall: 4/5 Food: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 4/5 Can't even lie, the food here was smackin! The shoestrings fries are fire!! The burgers were on point, the customer service was fast, friendly and polite! The oreo milkshake was smackin! The price was definitely fair in today's inflated world. Stopped in at Steak and Shake today, had to familiarize myself with the ordering process which after doing it once become very easy. The two burger hamburger with grilled onions and ketchup was delicious, along with the fries in tallow. The manager was extremely helpful and provided great service. Will visit this location again soon. read more

My son and I came to this location on a very busy Friday night. Many of the self order kiosk were not working. After a long wait in line and a failed Kiosk, Jimmy, a Steak and Shake employee, saw the issue and took our order directly. Thank you Jimmy! I have not been to a Steak 'n Shake in years. You order on a kiosk now and the soda machine takes a QR code. The food was hot and fresh. The shakes were wonderful. We received a free shake since we did the survey and it was after 4 PM. The staff, especially Khali, was wonderful. read more

Been stuck in your drive thru for 30 minutes. Wtf are you doing in there. So much for fast food. Ridiculous.

I ordered 2 double patty and double cheese burgers and an onion ring. The burgers were great but why am I paying an extra $2 for onion rings on a combo when I'm only getting 6 small onion rings. I find that very misleading or maybe I'm fat and greedy. Also waited almost 30 minutes for my food when this should be a FAST food joint. read more

They no longer have waiters, everything is some touch screen kiosk! AND IT STILL ASK FOR A TIP.you will get your own food when it is yelled out, and then stand in line for 20 minutes while people try to figure out the drink kiosk. Love that it is locally owned and operated per the sign out front but when you come inside it screams the total opposite by not having actual waitressing. I've sat here for an hour, and every single person that has come in is upset about the kiosk and the way drinks are done now. For the dining room, it's clean. But does not feel welcoming anymore because the staff does not come on this side of the aisle. No longer can you have a favorite waitress or waiter. Food is what you would expect, good as always. Cannot recommend a place that does not invest into the community. read more

Tallow fries and onion rings are great. So were the burgers and chili today as well.

Just had occasion to visit this store since it reopened. Never again... and here's why. For almost 50 years it's always been a treat to go to Midwest stores in Illinois and Indiana. Always fun to sit down and have a server take your order at the table, have a personal exchange, or even go to the counter for a to-go order. Since moving to SE Wisconsin, this Gurnee location is the closest store to me. How disappointing to have to have to spend an inordinate amount of time navigating a kiosk when ordering for 4 people. I won't be back. That said, the store was clean and orderly and the young lady behind the counter did offer to help. read more

Hard to get excited about this " new look" for one of our old favorites. We miss the waitstaff. Food is still good but the flavor just feels different and less special. The ordering process is impersonal and I inadvertently ordered cheese on my fries. The manager was nice enough to swap it out. Still, the food was not hot and just not the same. I predict the demise of this chain. The website makes excuses for the kiosk ordering approach. Just very impersonal. Sadly, we won't be back. read more

We had not been to a Steak &Shake In years, walked in all excited thinking bowl chilimac Steak plate burger frys however much to our chagrin it was like walking into the future one I wish no part of auto ordering. Older people are intimidated by it. People behind like hurry up. I will probably not be back damn shame because in its day best stop on road. Great coffee. Was left cold very i have to place order then tip for absolutely nothing. No personalized service just like in cafeteria your new way sucks takes away jobs just increases owners money. Kind of trash, fries are tiny, shakes are overrated, and they always take forever. It's always packed so the locals like it, that or it's the only thing other than McDonald's that's open super late. read more

Used the drive-thru on my home this afternoon. The Coke was good, but I ordered Diet Coke. The top patty of my burger tasted as if it had been used to clean the grill. Why extra ketchup was added, I have no idea; perhaps to hide the burned bits. The fries were cold, limp and stale. The service was OK. I used to love Steak n Shake. It has gradually gone downhill. After today, I won't be back. read more

Used to be a real favorite. They reopened with touch screen ordering which is very confusing and takes a long time to use. Horrible. Then, the food was not what we ordered when it arrived. The attendant did not know what to do so he took it back to the kitchen and removed the pickles! We asked to speak to the manager but he never came. He stood at the grill and never even turned around. Don't think they will last. The place is ruined now. read more

We used to come here at least once a month, but life changes made this location less convenient. I happened to be passing by today and decided a burger and fries sounded good. I have to agree with other reviews, this place has gone a bit downhill. The food was solid. It's not amazing, but for less than 10 bucks a person how much quality do you expect? My Frisco melt was tasty, but the fries weren't as fresh as I would like. The real issue was the service. Like many reviewers experienced they seem to have forgotten I was there. I ultimately had to wave down a server to place my order, and there were almost no other customers. We never received placemats and had to ask for silverware as well. None of this was a deal breaker, but these are basic functions that all servers should be able to handle. Cleanliness falls by the wayside here, the bathroom was particularly grimy. All in all an average experience. There's plenty of options for dining near Gurnee Mills, this is a decent cheap option. read more

Use to love this place. Now with the changes they have made it's the pits. Loved talking to our servers before now you talk to Kiosk to order. Thinking because we are dinning in the server would bring the food to us. NOPE it was out on a tray and tossed on the counter and they yell out a number! BINGO!!!! The steak burgers we ordered were paper thin and tasted like shoe leather. Their fries remind me of shoestring potatoes. The best was the onion rings they only decent thing we ordered. So if your looking for a fast food restaurant with no interaction with people then this is for you. I'm sure the original owner of this company didn't have this in mind when they started up. There pictures on the wall shows what they invisioned so marketing has it wrong the upgrades are horrible! Next time we'll go to Applebees or Chilis. Jmw read more

This must be the slowest and most short staffed Steak'n Shake I've ever been to. The servers there were nice but it took way too long to be seated and served. I came here with coworkers right after sixflags ended because we were hungry. There was a long line and it was about a 15min wait to be seated. Around 10-15min to get our orders in and an hour to actually get our food. It was to a point where I wasn't even hungry anymore. I ordered a simple chicken tenders meal and when my food came it was cold. I'm not sure if the chef at the back cooked it and the waiters/waitresses didn't have time to serve it out but I like my food hot and not cold. Overall, I would come back to this location to eat. I just wish this place wasn't so short staffed. read more

This place is a teen zone after 9:30 PM, seemingly filled to 80% capacity by the time we arrived. They take forever to seat you here, that is IF you get seated at all. There was no hostess to be found at the front. No greeters because everyone is busy on the floor. After 15 minutes of standing while I'm 5.5 months pregnant and still haven't been seated with a toddler in a stroller, we left to take our business elsewhere. No apologies or any kind of customer service, no eye contact (everyone seems to avoid us) and when I finally caught someone to speak to I received a reply of "we have to clean tables before we seat you", when I clearly see at least 2 booths that have been cleaned and are open. Well, clearly they are too busy for our business so we moved on to Taco Bell instead with no waits. We just wanted to grab a quick bite so at that point, any place was better than this one. read more

Okay, used to love love this place, now I hate it, ordered a butter burger and got full grease, ordered chili and it was obvious out of the can and Luke warm... fries cold and flimsy. This was through doer dash so we said let's give it another try and the kiosks is terrible, it should only be for take out orders. We used to love the old fashioned ambiance, now it reminds me of the jet sons and I hate it..... won't be back via delivery or dine in. This was my first time here and I think it was good. The fries were a touch cold and in my opinion really skinny but my daughter enjoyed them. We had the triple burger with fries for $3.99 not bad at all. The burger was hot and the I thought it was delicious, I love the extra long pickles on it. My kids loved the birthday cake shake. Wish I had gone during the happy hour where shakes are half priced. I will have to go again during the 2-4pm timeframe to get my kids some more shakes. My daughter was so happy to find actually cake pieces in her shake lol. The customer service was fine here, no complaints. We only did drive thru. I will def check out Steak' n Shake when I see one in the future. read more

Long story short: tasty, inexpensive food in a cramped, filthy setting. My boyfriend and I took a random trip to Gurnee, IL and passed this Steak 'n Shake. Neither of us had been in years so it was pretty obvious that would be our dinner choice on the way out of town. Both of us opted for the The Original Double 'N Cheese Steakburger 'N Fries - a steal at $3.99. I went for all toppings except the onion and was pleased with the combo. The burger had delightfully crispy edges, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the veggies seemed fresh. The fries were true matchsticks and were hot and fresh and not too salty. We also split a dark chocolate shake for $2.99. It comes in a huge glass and is a step above the fast food shakes of my youth; the ice cream isn't premium, but it seems blended and not just tapped from a machine. I didn't think the dark chocolate flavor was much different than regular chocolate syrup, but it still hit the spot. The low prices are hard to beat and the quality felt better than most big drive-thru chains. Aside from the food, pretty much everything else about this location is just awful. Here's a list: - Understaffed; long lines for takeout and to pay for dine-in but only one person at the register. - Every surface is pretty dirty and tables go a long time before being cleared. - Bathrooms are disgusting - the TP dispenser is broken so you have to pick up the roll from the floor. - Our server barely said a word to us; she just stood at the table and stared at us with her pen and pad in hand. We got no silverware aside from one spoon for our shared shake. - Again, everything is in need of a good scrub; it's enough to make me wonder what condition the kitchen is in. There was one server who was busting her butt, checking on tables she didn't have and serving as host, but other than that the two other staff people we saw didn't seem overly concerned about anything. The line for takeout was out the door and every table was full, so I'm guessing most people operate on the same principles that led me to give the place three stars - the cheap bill and hot and tasty food give more leeway than usual. read more

What is wrong with this place? It used to be good eating and a fun place to go but ultimately it is just going down. I was there with family today around 4:30 pm. After waiting in an almost empty restaurant for almost 10 minutes to be seated no one ever came to take our order. We waited 20 minutes and then we got up and left. It was as if no one cared about the clients. I tried to call the attention of the waiters but no one even noticed. The problem was that we had a 3 y/o toddler that really needed to eat something quick. We will not recommend this place or go back there again. Oh, and clean the tables, ours was dirty and sticky. read more

I stopped by this location after attending my son's graduation ceremony from Navy boot camp. I just wanted a quick bite to eat. I got to the drive thru and the person on the other end wasn't that friendly. The only thank you that I heard was the one I provided after ordering the meal. I then drove up to the winds to pay for my purchase. A person who appeared to be the manager was there and I provided my card to pay for the order. He didn't provide a greeting and again I said thank you when I paid for the meal. No response again. I see that the lack of customer service comes from the top. I couldn't get a simple thank you out of anyone. My daughter was in the backseat and she reminded me that it wasn't Chic Fil A. I only wanted a thank you and some simple courtesy. I wasn't expecting to hear "it's my pleasure". This is why all fast food workers don't deserve $15 an hour. The food-ummmm mediocre at best. I ordered a kids meal steak burger with mayo and ketchup. There was so much mayo on the burger I could have made ranch dressing the patty wasn't done enough and the bacon was limp. Not again. read more

Horrible experience. 40 minutes late on delivery. Food was absolutely iced cold. Drink was missing. Milkshake was knocked over and spilled on my patio. Contacted management at location, was met with complete and total indifference. Tried to call their customer service number, you can't get through because it says they're not there. For five days straight! No assistance from the delivery team. No assistance from either manager or the owner from the location! Both were rude and hung up on me and each instance. Had to eventually file a claim for my credit card to try to get some of my money back. Do not recommend. Very rude staff.
