The food is always good, I've never had a complaint about the food. But the lobby? Most of the tables were dirty, the floor was sticky. There was a large area where you could clearly see something had been hastily wiped up. And was it bring your kids to work day? Because there was a table in the middle of the lobby with 3 small children, and every so often a worker would come out and talk to them or tell them to behave. Amd the audacity to ask for a tip? I normally give SnS really good reviews. However, this one wasn't near the quality that I have come accustomed to with this chain. First of all, they have no waitstaff, so you have to use this impersonal robot kiosks to order your food. Yuck! The food wasn't prepared as I had ordered it nor did I think the cooks cared. First things first I walk in the floors were so sticky. I thought I was gonna lose a shoe. not only was I not greeted by the employees, but they seemingly ignored me for about 5 to 10 minutes as they cursed and argued about childish things. Employees were very friendly. We got the Grilled Chicken Salad and the Apple Pecan Grilled Chicken Salad. The lettuce and apples were fresh. The chicken was moist. We got a side of guacamole, which we did not try, because it was browning. We asked for fresher guac and received a fresher serving of guacamole; it still had some browning. The blue cheese dressing was fresh, but I didn't like the flavor (I love me some GOOD blue cheese dressing!). I asked for lemon wedges with my salad, but did not receive them. Dude, good luck getting two entire meals for $15 anywhere else that also includes wait service. I think people give Steak 'n Shake a bad rap because they're expecting world class service. But here's the deal- the garlic double steak burger is dope. The fries come to life when you add some of the seasoning (red lid, always on the table). Chili Mac was my childhood favorite. The workers here run around as fast as they can and do a great job considering they are expected to be both fast food and casual dining. So, the haters can be harsh all they want, but I miss having one of these within 100 miles and sometimes drool thinking about those steak burgers. read more

My husband and I were driving through Missouri on our way home for a funeral and decided to stop for something to eat. We were seated relatively quickly but waited forever for food and shakes. It shouldn't take almost 30 minutes for a shake when shakes are your main selling item. We finally got the food and it was lukewarm as if it had been sitting waiting for a while. We left and had to drive around the building to get out and noticed what appeared to be a manager and two other employees smoking outback. Obviously this is why everything was taking so long. Everyone is entitled to a break but during a busy time your manager should be the one encouraging people to do their job rather than playing with their phones. We spent 20 minutes in line at the drive which would not have been an issue if the order had been correct and the staff competent. When it is as finally time to order, we had a hard time understanding anything the person taking the order said because they were muffled, presumably because they had a mask on. The order was not difficult, a patty melt, a western bbq burger, an original double steak burger, plain, an original double steak burger with onion only, 2 vanilla shakes, 1 chocolate shake and one peanut butter cup shake. Even though we gave the order slowly and clearly, we had to repeat it multiple times. The order was not repeated to us after placing it, nor when when we pulled up to a he window. When given the total, I asked for person to repeat the order, They were missing the plain double steak burger and 1 cheese fries. We had to explain that a couple times. When we got the order, it was short an order of cheese fries and the plain original double had cheese on it and the double cheeseburger with onion had pickles on it not to mention the fries were ice cold. The food was flavorless and the bathrooms looked like someone had one too many and missed the toilet. Told management and got the response "were busy" and can't get to it. I eat here every now and then usually not a bad place for a quick burger, I also like their milkshakes as well. The place is usually borderline greasy almost to some considered a dive because of the crowd it serves. I'm not a fan of people mopping floors while I'm eating as the smell turns me off. This is one of my issues with Steak&Shake which I have asked people to please hold off on the mopping until I have finished my meal. Hard to eat when you see something like this. Overall nothing fancy but the food is usually pretty good, Kind of funny how they charge for certain items like tomatoes or lettuce? It is extremely rare for us to give 5 star reviews for any fast food establishment (other than Chick-fil-A) but I had to take the time to properly recognize our experience with Steak 'n Shake # 1701701 in Cape Girardeau, MO. The staff there are well trained and very friendly. I LOVE Steak 'n Shake and frequently eat here when I travel (we don't have one in MS) so I love the food but what set this experience apart was the service we received tonight. We were tired & hungry after traveling all day without eating. We wanted to go to another restaurant in the area (Broussard's) but the employees there decided to close very early. Needless to say, we were upset and disappointed. However, we were persuaded to change our attitudes when we walked into Steak 'n Shake. We were greeted immediately by Tyler. This young man was very friendly and focused on taking care of us. We let him know we just wanted to get an order to go. For those of you that haven't worked in the restaurant business, that's usually a sure sign you won't be getting a tip. That didn't influence how Tyler treated us one little bit. He cheerfully took our order that had several special requests. Several other waiters and waitresses asked if they could be of any help as well. Weary from travel, Hangry & upset over another restaurant closing early, we had our spirits lifted by the awesome staff there. Even the cooks took time to chat a little with us. In the 1970s I was on business in downstate IL and happily discovered Steak N Shake. Exceptionally good fast food. Fast forward to 2016, and I was looking forward to . . . a sit-down restaurant with table service?!?!? SNS, just stoppit! You aren't fooling anyone. And at your prices you have got to be seriously underpaying your servers. And stop crushing the burgers to paper thin - the crunch is interesting, but it's not very burger-like. The good news is the food still tastes fresh and our server gave us excellent service. And the prices are still good. read more
