Among the fancier dining options for hungry shoppers at Antea, Steak Company represents the Steakhouse guild at this exclusive mall. The so-called 'new concept' in steakhouses, as claimed by its website, really does not differentiate itself that much from it counterparts in any manner that may seem obvious. As with other restaurants at Antea, the space is well designed, the fixtures look expensive, the dining room is ample, and the terrace is buzzing with families as if they were another store's window display. The service is excellent and attentive, as with most luxurious restos in Mexico, but unfortunately the kitchen is not on par with its service.
It seems going to a steakhouse in Mexico is a gamble; there is a culture of mishandling meat that has permeated steakhouses in this part of the country for ages, with only a few of them truly being experts at this craft. There are renowned steakhouses in Mexico, mostly chains, that know how to prepare, cook, and serve their meats right, such as Che Papusa and Josecho in Queretaro, Puerto Madero and La Mansion in Mexico City to name a few. Other steakhouses typically under and/or overcook their meats, which is why I always order medium-well at restaurants that I have not experienced before.
While the appetizers were delightful, our tomawahk steak, though properly seasoned, was evidence of this persistent issue. The steak was ordered medium-well, but was delivered raw, with a lot of blue areas inside the appetizing crust that had formed on the outside. The unforgivable occurred when the steak was sent back. Once our server sliced the meat at the table, through which we noticed the improper cooking of the steak, the enormous slab of meat was sent to the kitchen to be cooked once more. To our dismay, the sliced steak was re-cooked and served once again to us. The result, a drier meat unevenly cooked due to the fact the meat had been previously sliced. This is a cardinal rule that was shamelessly broken, never re-cook a steak, and most definitely never re-cook a steak that has been sliced.
Clearly this steakhouse has lots of learning and maturing to achieve in order to reach greatness. Until then, the dream of a meat utopia has yet to materialize. read more
