I was in SGF, desperate for an emergency hair and beard trim before a big video conference call…read morethat popped up on my calendar, so I decided to try Dapper Barber because it looked like a place I could trust to trim my beard correctly. Boy, am I glad I did! The owner, Sean, cut my hair and beard, and 1) my beard has never looked better, because 2) nobody has ever paid so much attention to detail and been so meticulous in shaping it. I walked into Dapper Barber looking frizzled and slightly homeless, and when I walked out, I felt like I could have stepped into a beard competition and had a fighting chance at a trophy. Sean also did an excellent job with my hair, and convinced me that I was combing my hair slightly wrong for the past decade, showed me a better way to do it, and then shaped the hair up around it, and it looks better. Why haven't the many barbers I've been to over the years noticed that and offered to fix it for me? IDK, but Sean did, and I'm grateful. He's truly an artist and a craftsman with scissors and clippers, and he's good company, too. Further, the ambiance at Dapper is... well, dapper. The place is like a museum of dapper gentlemanhood over the years. Next time I'm in town, I'll plan to be there longer for another hair and beard trim, and to spend extra time marveling at all the artifacts and curiosities around the shop. One could make men's I Spy books by taking pictures of the shop--and I'd buy that, too! It's a shame I live so far from SGF; otherwise, I'd never go to another barbershop again in my life.

GOOD HAIRCUT, STUPID PRICING…read more Pretty good job done. My barber is only 1 in 2 that has ever used a bit of imagination when I told her "you choose what looks good" when asked how I wanted it cut. I don't know hair. And there is such a vast amount of different styles. So she done well. Just wasn't good at talking shop it seems, but neither am I. And she washed my hair afterwards to get out the loose hair. Oh, and she didn't let me see myself in the mirror until after she was finished; not important, just different. And she put a hot towel on my face while washing my hair. What struck me negatively was their pricing. $20 I'm okay with. But then they ask for a tip on top of their premium pricing. And $25 for a shave. Shaves take less time and possibly cost less in materials. Want to emulate the goodness of old time barber shops? Keep doing a good job and offer honest prices. So, the experience was okay. They used good products. And most importantly, she done a good job with my hair. Will I go there again? Only when I need the utmost from my appearance.

Then, not even intentionally, I stumbled across Brentwood, and I've been going there ever since--two years strong. These guys are on another level. He takes his time, makes sure every cut is on point, and never rushes through it like so many other barbers do. The guy knows exactly what he's doing, and I walk out looking on point every single time. On top of that, the whole shop has a great vibe--the staff is outgoing, friendly, and treats you like you're part of the family. There's no way I'm ever going anywhere else.

At the end of the cut, I went to pay and he refused. Said happy birthday. I am writing this review because that kind of kindness and customer service is absolutely not present in today's world.
