What I liked is that it did not only focus on that ... but also traced the history of the civil rights movement in America from the time of the chattel slave trade to current day. PROTIP: there is so much information and so much to see... I suggest you give yourself at least 2 hours when visiting. I made the mistake of going 1.5 hrs before i had to b at the airport and was only able to see the 1st building and even then i felt that i had to rush through towards the end of my time there. The exhibits, sculptures, pieces, and installations were well done and keep you engaged the entire time.

But for all the wrong reasons we can see the legacy that Martin Luther King left behind. They have dedicated this place to his legacy. Let's go inside the museum. The legacy of his life is outlined here. The strife of the world. This is living history. The vision that he had and what he has done. The quiet proof and all that happened here. The car the way life was set all those days ago. The museum outlines historic events in a difficult way and time when the world was involved in much change. This is a must see..... when you come to Memphis. The mystery and myth of love and light can be seen here . The value is something you cannot put a price on . Freedom! For all! You will learn something here. This self proclaimed leader will shake you . Bring tissues and at least two hours to see the museum. The parking is on street for best results. Again, living history. The speaker box outside on the side walk outlines the "day of." Love and light are what he left.

You can't reserve tours online and are available on a first come first serve basis and take place at the half hour mark. I arrived at about 12:15 and despite the 12:30 tour being removed as available for the tour board the employee at the front kindly let me slide into the 12:30 tour group. It's a small building but A LOT of history and memorabilia are packed into the building . The guided tour begins on the second floor where there is a small single room with musuem exhibits and items from the early days of Sun Records. After spending time here you'll be taken back downstairs to spend time in the actual recording studio. In total the tour lasted about 45 minutes and you were able to linger at the end without feeling rushed to take photos with THE microphone and soak in the energy of the space. If you're any kind of music lover you can't miss this building where so much pop culture and music history was made.

Decorated in a 1970's style I found it to be somewhat dark & moody. The Mrs says that was just the style then. Considering how many visitors go through the museums, gift shops, restaurants, home & grounds it was very clean & neat. All of the staff that we encountered were very friendly & quite helpful. Once you purchase your tickets, you'll ride a shuttle to the home & begin your tour, standing in line with other travelers, weaving your way through the first floor & basement of the home & then walking outside. The second floor is not open to visitors. There are ten museums on the grounds, showing his airplanes, automobiles, motorcycles, clothing, singing career & his short stint in the US Army. Each museum has its own gift shop attached. We spent hours at the site & I was pretty worn out by the end of the day. Wear comfortable shoes & clothing. We did enjoy our visit immensely.

And I was so impressed with how organized this whole facility is for both the house tour and the exhibits. We pre-purchased tickets for the 11am Elvis Experience. We arrived a little early and watched a short pre-show video before boarding a shuttle across the street to the house. We opted for the audio tour device, which was really smart since we didn't have a guided tour. They explain how to use the iPad and you get a really fun narration from John Stamos as you go throughout the two lower levels of the house. The Jungle Room and the Billiard Room did not disappoint! And by the time we made it to the Memorial Garden to see Elvis's grave, I was very moved. The house tour took about an hour and then we actually spent another couple of hours going through all the exhibits (the car museum, the planes, the concert costumes, and more). We even ate lunch at Glady's Diner on site (there are a couple places to sit and have food) which looks like an old 1950s diner and serves pizza, hot dogs, burgers, salads and milkshakes. Overall, I was so impressed by the whole facility. And I came away loving Elvis just a little bit more!

Stopped by the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, TN!…read more The museum is located on the original site of Stax Records, one of the most influential soul music labels in history. Founded in the late 1950s, Stax helped launch and shape the careers of legendary artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Sam & Dave, and Isaac Hayes. The label's music became known for its powerful vocals, unforgettable grooves, and deep Memphis roots. My favorite exhibit was Isaac Hayes's iconic gold-trimmed 1972 Cadillac Eldorado. The car featured plush interiors, a television, a refrigerator, and a custom sound system--an unforgettable symbol of Hayes's success and larger-than-life style during the height of his career. A fascinating stop filled with history, incredible exhibits, and the soulful sound that helped put Memphis on the musical map!

They have ample parking. You can purchase tickets online or on site. They have the tours every hour. It's very informative. You will come out a bit smarter with the music and ways of playing the music games during this period. They have a great selection of music memories and outfits that others wore all those years ago. Here it sits for us to see. The birth of music began here in Memphis. The memories of the past are now here for you and me to see at Stax.

There is a small parking lot on the side of the building, but no other clean indications on where to park. Admission ticket prices could be a little lower, we paid $38 for two adults.
