Just attended my very first Hackathon here! Aside from milling around outside of the building for several minutes with other confused Hackathon attendees wondering, "are you looking for Station Houston too? Is THIS where we're supposed to be?" my experience there was great. Since our event was on a Saturday, the doors were locked to the building (which probably contributed to the confusion), so we just pressed the intercom button, the security desk buzzed us in, and up we went to the 24th floor.
I spent 95% of my time at Station Houston in a large conference room with a gorgeous panoramic view of the downtown Houston skyline. The room's bright white, glossy walls were essentially huge dry erase boards, so-- being a UX designer + lover of drawing on walls, I graffiti-ed them up with our ideas during my group's brainstorming session. The cool thing was that (since everyone in the room could see what I was drawing/writing/working on)-- other participants from other groups would walk up and give their two cents on an aspect of our design/thought process that we hadn't thought of, or more insight on a topic that they had specialized knowledge of. Co-working space = WIN.
I'd only had a brief glance at a small portion of the rest of the suite on the way to the food/break room. It reminded me of Google HQ from what I'd seen of it in The Internship-- well, without the sleep pods, or massage suites or other fluff. Large glass paneled walls were the only thing that separated the numerous smaller, well-appointed co-working spaces throughout. It's kind of cool walking around and seeing other groups hard at work too-- grinding on a Saturday morning. All in all, it's a beautiful space, skillfully designed for productivity and collaboration. read more
