I started going to State Street Barbers earlier about 6 months ago and my experience here has far surpassed any other barbershop or salon I've ever gone to. I personally see Andrew and every haircut I've gotten has been on point. A few things that stand out the most to me about this shop are: 1) The barbers pay incredible attention to detail with every haircut - these guys are true professionals at their craft and take their work very seriously, and the finished product always shows it. 2) The overall experience is consistently a 10/10 ... especially the wash & hot towel over your face at the end. You never leave with wet hair still on your neck/ears -- they make sure you leave feeling clean, refreshed and ready to go out (the way it should be). 3) Price point -- undoubtedly the best value I've ever had for a haircut (especially in Chicago). I've seen a hand full of barbers/stylists in my lifetime and never have I truly wanted to tip more than 20% ... I haven't tipped less than 25% since my first haircut here because the service is that good & consistent. Strongly recommend these guys - you won't regret it! read more

By far one of the worst barbershop I have ever been to. Not a place for people with ethnic hair. The barber was rude and basically did whatever he wanted as opposed to what I showed him and what's I was expecting. read more

Ethan gets 10 stars for customer service. He went above and beyond to assist me. Thank you for your kindness Ethan!

I was quite skeptical coming in for a haircut as I've had some bad experiences around town. I came across a Barber named Luis. He answered all my questions, assured me I was in the right hands and indeed he was right. Luis is very professional, with a technique hard to match. He took good care of me and ensured I was liking what I was seeing during the process. I have now found my barbershop and even better a barber I can trust and makes me look good! I would highly recommend Luis and his colleagues any day of the week. Thank you Luis for the amazing haircut. read more

I moved to Chicago just over 6 years ago and one of the first things I needed to find was a new barber. Within the first week here a colleague of mine recommended Marcella after complimenting him on his haircut, and I've been seeing her ever since. Marcella has been very consistent and efficient along the way and always fades my hair perfect to how I like it. We've done some modifying over the years and she always listens first and gives her perspective before trying anything new. Priority for me now is keeping my hair looking full and healthy as it's thinned some, particularly up front. She simply did her thing, made a couple slight adjustments and the area receding the most is now darn near unnoticeable. I highly recommend Marcella first and foremost because she's a very talented barber. What I realized very early on was on top of that, she has a wonderful personality and we have a ton of fun. The straight razor neck cleanup and shampoo are amazing, but I can always count on feeling better than before I walked in after spending 30 minutes with Marcella! read more

Worst haircut I have ever recvd. Going to another barber shop to have it fixed tomorrow

Took my son here for the first time and Chris did an exceptional job! Will definitely be back.

Luis is great, good customer service, excellent barber, and good people relations. The shop is hidden, the sign is noticeable but the entrance is hidden on the backside of the building with trees shadowing over them. read more

Sam is my favorite barber in Chicago. He's friendly, works quickly but with care, and ultimately provides an excellent haircut. If you want to get a clean beard line up he's incredible. If your new to River North or just want to try out a new barber, St Street is a great option. Sam is my personal favorite but I believe everyone there offers a great and reasonably priced service. -Yale Reardon read more

I got a great haircut here and now I am torn. I had my allegiances to another place (and even reviewed as much). But, thats what so great about yelp, and the great city of Chicago. You can explore and find newer, bigger, betterer (thats a word) options, and I think I may have. I loved that you can make an appointment online. I loved that when you get there they greet you like a guest. I really enjoyed the haircut from Ann. The price is right and the location was clean. Look no further if you are looking for a great haircut in river north. read more

The place is great! Thank you Yelp for helping me find it. My son and I are on a road trip in need of haircuts. I didn't want to sit around waiting for a barber so I was able to book us a father-son appointment and not waste any time. Rami is excellent and we are both looking good. I appreciate the relaxed but sophisticated decor and Frank Sinatra Pandora station. Plus there is a Peet's right next door!!!! read more

State Street Barbers - Barbers Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I've gotten several haircuts from the barbers here and I would say most of them are pretty decent. But the reason for a 1 star rating is bc of how exceptionally bad Emmanuel was. He rushed through the haircut and got a completely different haircut then what I've asked for. Terrible job, lack of effort, two thumbs down read more

My prior Chicago barber retired so I needed to find a new one and I did in Joseph at this location. I couldn't be happier! Made my reservation online with no trouble and even got two reminders ahead of my appointment. Joe was right on time and asked all the right questions of me as a new customer and the resulting haircut was very well done! I especially like the fact they still give you a neck shave to finish off your cut. So well done even my daughter liked it! Happy to say Joe and State Street Barbers on Kingsbury will now be my go to Chicago barber! read more

Absolutely terrible haircut. Total waste of $40. My stylist had no skill whatsoever, and certainly couldn't be trusted with anything more complicated than a buzz cut. Thanks for a ruined head of hair. read more

Mind you the one star is for the interiors of this place because that was literally the only good thing about it I usually don't like to give negative reviews but this place was so awful it deserves one. We had booked an appointment and we called the receptionist to give her a heads up that we were stuck in traffic. She was horribly rude and told us about how they couldn't accommodate us if we were late. We ended up reaching on time anyway, and half the place was empty. Worst haircut ever. I don't know how it's possible to use a trimmer and get uneven hair. To top it off we started with an idea and that didn't end up looking good, and he tried selling it to me so badly. But I tried to get him to fix it and he got annoyed and pretty much refused to do the one thing I went to him for - a haircut. I ended up leaving because it was so frustrating to even think of expecting anything else from this horrible place. Won't be going back there. Won't even think of recommending it. Whoever does, I really hope you have a better experience than I do. Incompetent staff with zero manners. read more

They can take the reservation, they can't hold the reservation. I have had issues with this place before and today was finally the last time I will ever attempt to use this business. I booked myself a haircut online using their website. (Which, is barely usable, frequently times out, and apparently doesn't notify the location of an appointment.) I arrived about 10 minutes early and gave the receptionist my name and appointment time and she returned a blank stare and a "sorry we're booked." After about 10 minutes trying to get the website to pull up on my phone (even after using the wifi in the store) I was finally able to show the receptionist my appointment for the current date, location, and time. "It doesn't show up on my end, sorry." Avoid this atrocity. read more

Don't get haircut from Rami. I have received one of the worst haircuts and service from State Street Barbers. They advertise Signature Haircut with shampoo, scalp and shoulder massage, and hot towel included. He completely skipped the hot towel and massage, and he did shampoo in less than a minute. My hair was not even wet, he applied shampoo, partially washed it and applied conditioner. He seemed least interested to give a haircut and acted unprofessional. They charged $30 for the service and he gave a service that was not even worth $15 and skipped all the items. Moreover, the hair cut was really bad. In the end, he came near the receptionist and was standing next to her to see how much i would tip him. I tipped less on purpose to let him know he did bad. He actually doesn't deserve any tip for the service and staring at me when i was giving tip. They lost a customer today and they better teach their employees not to act cheap and act unprofessional or just hire professionals. Why would anyone pay and receive bad haircut and horrible service? There are many other salons in the city read more

You could easily miss this place if it wasn't for the barber shop poll outside. I was in the need of a haircut a few days ago and it seemed like Groupon knew this too because they offered a Groupon for State Street Barbers. I picked it up and a few days later I found myself at State Street Barbers. This location is perfect for me, it's right around the corner from where I work and I can hop in during lunch or for a quick cut after work. The place has a cool modern barber shop vibe. Next time I go in I might get a shave, I've always wanted to get a straight razor shave. The folks working were very friendly. Overall excellent service and a good price. You'll likely see me there again. read more

I've become unfaithful to my barber. I've found a new love and her name is Marcela. She works her magic on this unruly course hair of mine. She's does an excellent job. The staff there is great, always quick to offer a cup of tea or coffee. I think the price is great for a haircut, shampoo and conditioner, and a hot straight edge neck shave. Always easy to get an appointment, sometime on the same day, if Marcela is working. read more

I decided to use the River North State Street Barbers. This location is probably the most modern. The coffee and condiments were full. Now comes the disaster. I had selected Marcella to be the stylist as I had read a decent review about her. I was trying to let my hair grow out fuller and told her that I only needed the front of the hair shortened while maintaining the thickness. It seems that stylist automatically think that when you say you want the length shortened that it also means the thickness is going to be thinned out as well. I told her clearly not to even touch the back of the hair as the length and thickness was fine the way it was. She told me that she was going to touch it anyway and did so against my wishes. I then noticed that she was thinning out other areas of my hair as well. 15 minutes into the haircut and told her that the haircut was over as I feared she was going to keep on clipping away. She looked at me stunned until I finally told her to take the apron off me or I would rip it off. Marcella is typical of a stylist who will not listen and is going to do what she wants to do regardless of what you tell her. Unless you are almost bald or have a very simplistic hair style I would not have her touch my hair if it was free! I will now move on to search for another stylist. read more

I had to get a shave unexpectedly for a professional photo and didn't want to risk cutting myself, so I decided to treat myself to a hot lather shave at State Street Barbers. The staff, including my barber, were all very nice and professional and the experience is definitely luxurious with hot towels, lotions, etc. throughout the process. I had no worries about being cut and afterward, there wasn't even the slightest nick on my face. Unfortunately, there was still a significant amount of stubble left behind. My expectation for a straight razor shave is that I would be almost perfectly smooth and not have to worry about shaving for several days. The actual result was more like how I would look one day after shaving myself. For $45, I expect much better than something I could do myself at home. The barber only did one pass with the blade, which I suspect is the main issue. I'm not sure if this is standard or not. There weren't other customers waiting, so it's not like he was rushing to get to the next person. Next time I need a professional shave, I'll be looking elsewhere - or just doing it myself. read more

Go here. Ask for Margie. Leave looking better than when you arrived. My appointment was at 10:30 this morning. Margie was running on time, friendly, informative, and most importantly I was super happy with my haircut. I wanted to get some product but they were out of stock so I'm knocking off one star. The haircut itself and service I received from Margie was great. read more

Great gem for the neighborhood, good, clean, friendly service, decent prices, and a unique experience. A straight-edge shave on the back of the neck and a warm towel on the face during the shampoo is as good as it gets. I have been going for 3 years. And, Margie, is the best thing that happened to me. She even gives good tips to manage your hair at home. I 100% recommend her, just leave some of her appointments open for me please :) read more

I moved to River North in August 2010 and it took a while to find a quality haircut at affordable price. I found it at State Street Barbers. The service is fantastic. You walk in and they immediately offer you water, coffee, or tea. $30 gets you a haircut, shampoo, brief neck massage, and a hot straight edge blade neck shave. Every cut I've had has been great, although my haircut isn't particularly complex. Anne usually cuts my hair, but I've had two others cut it also, and they were good too. The price tag (I'm very cheap) bumped my review down to 4 stars, but their hours (open until 9pm Mon-Thurs!) bumps it back up to a 5. read more

I needed a haircut last minute for a wedding and Shanna did a great job. She's good with fades and beard trims and my lining was great!

I booked an appointment despite reviews as I live a block away. Upon arriving for my 8am appointment, there was another customer waiting outside as shop was still not opened. My barber, Sam, finally was ready for me at 815am and did not acknowledge being late. He rushed through the haircut, probably to get back on schedule, as his 830 checked in soon after. I pointed out that my back hairline was not even, but he still didn't fix after I specifically pointed it out to him. There are too many other barbershops around to accept this lack of professionalism. read more

I have been going to Margie for the past couple months. I should start by saying that I am pretty particular with my hair. Margie gives a great haircut. She is very attentive to details, and does an overall great job. As long as I am in River North, I plan to have her cut my hair. read more

I used to go to a multitude of barber shops, then I finally settled on State Street. Consistent service no matter the location. After getting a haircut from Rami I haven't used or seen another barber since. I actually commute all the way from Logan Square to get my hair cut from him. He has a great personality and consistently great humour. He even extended an extra special treatment for my 'pre-marriage' haircut. First, if you're looking for a great haircut, albeit a touch overpriced -- go to State Street Barbers. Second, go to Rami. read more

These barbers need to step up their game, fade was just bad horrible technique. Also, how are you a barber and not know how to handle a blade, worst 60 bucks I've ever spent. Need to cross train with the barbers @ Southport, just saying. read more

Being new to Chicago, I was...um..shocked by the lack of barber shops in the area. I Yelped barber shops near me and all these salon's came up. Luckily I was patient and came across State Street Barbers. I didn't bother scheduling an appointment (next time I will though). I had to wait an hour, but I didn't mind, I understand that a quality haircut takes time. Bobby ended up cutting my hair and I am beyond satisfied. He took his time, clearly knew what he was doing, he was calm, cool, and friendly. I am definitely going to go back to Bobby I received a quality haircut and walked out of there very satisfied. Two little things (hence the 4 stars): the price ($27 for haircut, but that includes razor neck shave) is $10 more expensive than what I am used to in San Francisco. The second is I am kind of bummed that a quick beard line up is an additional $15. I wish a quick line up, just the electric shaver is fine, was included. I guess I have to start practicing how to do line ups. Any volunteers?? read more

I don't know how this place stays in business. It's currently 11:32 and I'm waiting for my 11:00 appointment. I only come here for the convenience of its location. Probably that won't happen again. So I gave up on this location and now at there Old Town location. My barber is "sick". No call. read more

Marcella is horrible. Do not go here. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in my life. Hands down. The stylist Marcella Was clearly disgruntled and having an awful day. When I sat down she never asked me how I was doing. She proceeded to give me the most basic haircut you could ever asked for which was a bald head. She argued with me about how to do it because it appears that she's never cut anyone's hair that was slightly ethnic. I was polite the entire time and she nonetheless argued with me back-and-forth And kept pointing to her 25 years of experience. I have never been treated so poorly in any experience in my life. Plus a simple baldhead (10 minutes cut) cost $35. Completely overpriced. Do not go here. read more

I did say I was going to come back! I went into the shop yesterday for a clean up and the young lady receptionist named Cindy was able to fit me right in. She promised me I would only have to wait 5-10 minutes and I waited only 2 minutes which is exceptional based upon my last visit. Marcella gave me a great clean up and the receptionist was very friendly and even asked me if I wanted to schedule my next appointment, which I did. I told her I'd make sure to come in when she's receptioning based on her customer service. My wife absolutely loves her they had a nice short conversation. Thank you again Ill remain a loyal State Street Barber client! read more

Marcella T was my barber. She had very poor customer service skills and completely rushed through my haircut. It probably took maybe 15 minutes tops. I told her to just trim the top and she took off way more then I wanted. Will not be visiting again. read more

I second the review "Don't get a haircut from Rami." I wish I'd read this review before I went in on Saturday. He's a nice guy, but don't let him anywhere near you when he's holding any barber tool, whatsoever. I was visiting Chicago, and forgot my trimmers. I wanted to get a beard trim and neck shave. I settled for only a beard trim when I was told a shave was $45 regardless of how much of one's face got shaved. When I got back to my hotel room, I was deeply disappointed to examine Rami's work. He took the clippers and lopped off a sideburn to above my ear. It was the shabbiest beard trim I've ever received. Thankfully, it will grow back over a couple of weeks, and I'll have learned to choose very carefully the next time I need a barber when traveling. Simply put, there is nothing special about State Street Barbers. Take away the wood panelling, vintage knick-knacks, and jacked-up prices, and you have Supercuts. The precision, hospitality, and attention they talk about on their website was nowhere to be seen. read more

Just like Brad C. before me, I was turned on to State Street Barbers by Groupon. I called to make an appointment for 8:00 and they told me to come in whenever. Its only a few miles for me so I rode my bike out...and where the hell is this place? I took a couple minutes to find it behind the coffee shop. They probably ought to work on some signage. When I did find it I was quickly greeted by two employees at the front desk. I checked in with my Groupon and was seated right away even though i was early. Well...there was no other customers, so I'm not sure if that's normal or not. The woman who cut my hair (Marcella?) gave me a great haircut. It looks good, she's VERY efficient, etc. I'm not one for a lot of small talk when getting my hair cut and I think she picked that up. She spent a LOT of time on some of the details that would be overlooked at some of the low-cost haircut type places. I know the "olde timey" look is there gimmick, but I could probably do without it. I was VERY relieved to see her change the blade on the straight razor before she cleaned up the back of my neck. I'm a bit nutty about such things. It was WELL worth the $13 or whatever I paid Groupon, I'm not sure about $30. All of the extra's you read about on their website (coffee/tea, shampoo, massage, etc) are all offered in a "you don't want X, do you? Look, I don't really want a shampoo. Or a massage for that matter. BUT. If i did, I might feel funny about asking for it after it's presented in that way. Know what I'm saying? read more

Before moving to Chicago one year ago, I spent 14 years in the Marine Corps. Part of that job was getting a haircut every week. That being said, once you found the right barber, you stuck with them for years...or until the Marine Corps moved you to a new assignment. I searched for awhile for a good barber, and after several misses, I landed at State Street Barbers. I've had haircuts from several of the barbers there and by far the best one I have received was from Rami. I'm not sure what Kevin C. is talking about below, but if you look at all of his feedback, he seems to dislike every haircut he gets. Rami is one of those unique barbers that truly listens to what you want to do with your hair and is able to make it happen. He's also taken time during our sessions to discuss ways to better care for my hair. I get two haircuts a month from him and will continue to for as long as I live in Chicago. read more

Update: The owner sent me an email apologizing for my experience and offering me a free cut and, more importantly, a recommendation on which stylist he uses and felt was very good. Not sure I'll be back since I've got a great regular now but for that reason, I'll raise my rating by 1 star for that gesture alone... but the rating is mainly for the gesture. read more

I found myself in the first few weeks of muggy weather, with month long grown out hair, and a very disco look to boot. Luckily I had free time, and ducked out of the office to have my hair trimmed up. Googled "best mens haircut chicago" and State Street Barbers popped up. I work in the loop, and was hoping that SSB would be located close to my office. A little bummed when I noticed that all their locations are outside the loop proper. However the Kingsberry shop was a short bus ride away. The location is a little 007ish, being that the barber poll is almost not visible from the street. (Walk beyond Caribou Coffee), however I didn't have issue with having to look for a spot. At any rate when I called the receptionist was a little less than welcoming, and upon checking in seemed a little distracted as she asked my name, then repeated a completely different name back to me. (Remember Lawrence?) But I am not rating that lady; I am rating my haircut, the barber and the space it was executed in. Therefore Richard gets all 5s. Seated me quickly and equally as fast started to ask all the right questions, he knew precisely what to remove to give me a less of a Tony Manero look, and left enough up top so that I can actually style it. I found the space to be built out nicely to give that old world feel. The price point was justifiable. (Have paid far more from another men's salon starts with H and ends with O) And didn't receive the haircut I wanted and paid almost $20 dollars more. So yea. . . Think I found my new Barber. read more
