Rather than rocks or ledges that threaten ships, muck is the problem. This part of the channel clogs up with mud and many ships have gone aground here. The light was finally built in 1898 and is 53 feet tall. A typical and inexpensive lighthouse, it served it's purpose well until it was decommissioned in 1978. As was common with this type of lighthouse the cast iron foundation was towed out to the proper located and then filled with rocks and cement. Then the top part that housed the keeper was built. A cool little lighthouse that can be seen distantly from land but the best by yak or other small craft. Care must still be taken when going out to the light because although modern navigational aids are now available the muck is still lurking and just waiting to grab your boat

It's odd that one of the institutions I have the most praise for on this island is the police…read moredepartment. I can't give them more than three stars on principle, although the words "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" certainly applies in certain circumstances. Those circumstances being, "if you're rich and white." Which, if you're on Nantucket, is probably the case. I can't speak for the experiences of the island's substantial immigrant worker community. Those of them I'd heard speak poorly of the police department didn't do so objectively. They'd either committed a crime or were in this country illegally, in which case they were really more worried about state and federal authorities... The cops out here are kind, relaxed and helpful. They don't get in people's faces just because they can. They only step in when they see something that's going to be a problem. So if they see people drinking a beer on the beach, or riding in the back of a pickup truck, or some other minute thing that would bring hell down on you on the mainland, they'll just let you be. Like in a real country. I've seen these guys break up parties simply by reminding the host that it's late and they (the host) were being rude to their neighbors; I've seen them give rides to people. They really do the protect and serve thing, which I've never seen anywhere else... And I'm fully aware that this is only because the island is loaded with cash and everyone is white. The reason they don't bust people for minor infractions? Because rich white people will sue. So can you enjoy the slack these people give? Or should you despise it as the poisoned fruit of privilege?

The original part was a cool 18th century cottage that became the library in 1908. Over the decades new additions and wings were built until the largest and most modern part was added in 1974. All these different rooms and parts gives the library a pleasantly strange character to it. The old parts are absolutely wonderful, with fireplaces and great charm. However as you cross into the newest section things change. No more charm, just a very practical, efficient and modern area. One of the most surprising things that I noticed is the security guard. I don't believe I have ever seen one except in the large libraries in the major cities. He was certainly pleasant and polite enough but his presence gave a whole different feel to the library. Not the mellow and friendly ambiance of the typical Cape Cod library but a no nonsense and pragmatic atmosphere. I was surprised to learn that this library has had some problems in the past that necessitate the presence of the guard. Various assaults and disturbances caused by individuals that used the library as a place to hang out and not for study. In fact I had a rather odoriferous individual ask me for money while I was in the library. That doesn't happen except in much larger libraries in the cities. The librarians were busy and didn't have time to chat and the security guard started looking at me funny so I didn't spend much time in here. This is the type of library to do what you have to do and then leave. The old sections are lovely but as you cross over into the newer parts you are reminded that things aren't always as quaint and tranquil as they seem.
