Chicken or meatball parmesan. Cubano. Bánh mì. Shrimp po boy. Philly cheesesteak. Lobster roll. I would include a donner kebab (we call them gyros in the USA). Those belong on display! But none of those were here at the Sandwich Public Library. Instead, I spent two hours here working this morning. I found a comfy spot with power outlets and a corner where I could work and take a quiet Zoom meeting as the fog burned off and my morning of remote work progressed. A few changes and additions have been added over the years but the basic library is still doing what the Westons envisioned. The library is located in the center of town and frequently has arts and craft shows and other events on the grounds. In the spring the lawn is blooming with flowers and trees and is a beautiful place to stop and admire. The original building is rather square and stout and looks like it will last for another thousand years. Unfortunately the additions look like after thoughts and although useful don't really blend with the original structure. The inside of the library has all the usual modern library conveniences and is definitely a useful place for some reading or research. Lots of local history and genealogy is available combined with some very knowledgeable people. There are also lots of cozy places to sit and interesting things to look at. In June the Library had an event that celebrated the dedication ceremony that was held back in June 17, 1911. It seems likely that the library will be having another celebration one hundred years from now.

The library itself looks historic & matches the area well. There are parking stalls along the right side of the building. Once inside the library you will see rich wood everywhere! The grandfather clock also sets this library apart. It does announce the time and shows itself off. If you need something printed this is the library that is worth a quick stop. GO RED SOX!!!!

Sarah and Mary…read more Way back in about 1850 two young girls named Sarah and Mary decided that their little town of Brewster needed a library and instead of just whining and complaining they did something about it. They got together some other girls and started working various odd jobs to get money together for the library. The girls bought, borrowed and got people to donate books and in the early part of 1853 "The Girls' Library" was opened in a bookcase of a local house. A membership fee of one dollar was charged to take books out and the little library thrived and grew. Finally in 1868 a real library was built and an addition was quickly added in 1877 to accommodate the growing collection of books. In 1879 the name was officially changed to "The Brewster Ladies' Library". In spite of the name members of the opposite sex were also allowed in the library. Other additions were added in 1977 and 1997 and were carefully planned to be in the same cool colors and style of the original. The library today is stunning, beautiful, fascinating and very, very cool. Just so many great old photos and things to look at. It's easy to lose track of time in a place like this. A very nice and knowledgeable volunteer gave us a wonderful tour of the library and filled us with more facts, figures and history that I could possibly remember. An amazing library that has grown a whole lot over the decades but in a way hasn't changed one bit. An absolutely wonderful testimony to a dream that two young girls named Sarah and Mary had so many, many years ago.

I feel like the kids have more books than the rest of the library itself! I bring my niece here every Thursday and literally spend 2-3 hrs putzing around. They always have a table set up with some sort of craft du jour for the tykes and tons of toys, puzzles, games, etc to keep them buzzing for hours. Love it!! The staff are super friendly and smiley. No crotchety old women here. Well I mean older women...yes, crotchety...no. And a major plus, the kids part is separate from the rest of the library, sooo...no one shushing the kids or giving us adults the hairy eyeball! Again, love it!! The rest of the library is pretty standard. Computer room, young adult area, massive amounts of adult lit., reading area, etc. It's worth the trip for sure. Definitely the coolest library in the area. Did I really just say that?! Oh and disregard the "Ladies" part, not sure where the name came from. Men are more than welcome!

However the building that the library is in was built by the Reverend John Lothropp in 1644 and that makes this building the oldest in the country to contain a library. And since the good Reverend held pray meetings in the front of the house that makes this building the oldest in the country to have held regular pray services. Of course the structure has been modified over the years but still looks and feels really old. Even smells really old, in a good way. And a really old building should have really old stuff inside and this place is filled with old stuff. Even some of the old floor boards creak in a really cool and old sounding way. This library is more of a museum than a book container, cool pictures of dead people on the walls, meticulously crafted ship models, really old books. antique furniture and other old stuff grace the interior of the library. The Sturgis Library is a really cool and functional library in a really cool Cape Cod town, the type of place you can easily drive right by without even noticing it. And that would be a real shame.
