Very unprofessional experience. She refused to let me choose a less expensive procedure and made discriminatory remarks, saying Romanian patients "ask too many questions" and that she prefers Hispanic patients because they are "submissive." Instead of sending a thank-you after payment, she fabricated more bills. When I raised concerns, she told me to find another dentist but claimed I'd return. Completely unacceptable. Dr. Ligia State is amazing!! I had a big issue with my front tooth, she performed a very difficult root canal. I had a similar experience to Joe S., read his review below. Dr. State routinely avoids negative reviews on Zocdoc by falsely reporting that patient did not show up. This happened to me twice already. My visits to her office are nowhere to be found on ZocDoc, and consequently I cannot post a review there. I am writing one here instead. This little trick speaks volumes of her professionalism and integrity. I first met Dr. State some three years ago, and at first she seemed welcoming, chatty and nice. But that stopped after she did a filling that fell out a few days later. Upon my return she became defensive, argumentative and then downright insulting. I could not be calmer and more patient with her, so I was baffled to say the least. Fast forward to now. A year or two have gone by (my memory differs from hers on this, but this isn't the important part), and the same filling fell out again. Although she had assured me it would last forever this time. As usual, my visit started by taking x-rays. About a dozen of them. I don't recall any dentist ever taking so many x-rays. My suspicion is that they now charge by the shot. After that, in comes Dr. State and immediately I can tell that she is not happy to see me. In a tone somehow both gleeful and aggressive she tells me I need a root canal. I point out that it's the same tooth she worked on before and ask what changed. She did not like my question. I must think I am a dentist. I should hire lawyers if I doubt her opinion. She is yelling at me. She will not treat me. I leave flabbergasted. Never in my life had I been talked down to and insulted by a doctor in such a way. "Unprofessional" does not even begin to describe it. I wish I recorded this. To cap it all off, I now see that after my visit she no longer accepts my insurance. I find this somewhat funny. To sum up, if you like coming three times for a filling, and then being talked down to and insulted, this may be your dentist. For me, this was my worst experience with a doctor ever, and I have been to a few. Side note to Zocdoc: improve your system! I understand that you want people to feel good about your doctors, but your ratings aren't worth much when it's so easy for a doctor to avoid being reviewed. read more

Dr. State is incredible! I first came in after a bad car accident needing some emergency dental work. Dr. State was immediately present and caring. She gave me great medical advice and her personal number asking me to text her to let her know how my hospitalization was going. That level of caring is something special. I have continued to see Dr. State for the crowns and implants needed after my accident. She has continued to provide top quality care and has continued to be the kindest and most caring dentist I've ever had. Dr. State has also, done a great job of working with my insurance to get the best care and has also been totally up front about the pros/cons and out-of-pocket prices for all treatment options. She is super intelligent (fluent in at least three languages, probably more), able to provide exceptional care to people from any background and circumstance, and just an all around great person. I visited Dr. State for an extraction. I am very fearful of dentists and had false hopes that this dentist would be professional and help me save as many teeth as possible. I have a deductible and just wanted an extraction. Dr. State said that I did not have to lose the tooth and she could give me a crown. We discussed the procedure, I paid 1100 out of pocket and on the last visit she informed me that she preferred Latin patients at her practice(I am Black), she said that since coming to this country she spent most of her time in Hispanic neighborhoods and just felt more comfortable with Hispanic people. She preferred speaking Spanish and wanted to make sure that I knew that I was not welcome at her practice. The crown is high, there is a space between the crown and my tooth in the back. I don't think there was enough tooth left for this crown and to top it off she told me that I would be better without insurance. As in, my health does not matter so why have insurance. The crown placed in too high on purpose. She started laughing at the number of cavities I have and alluded to a scenario where I will have to have a full denture procedure. my second time here for a cleaning was a very different experience than the first. the main difference - and this is not likely dr. state's fault - was that i became sick following the cleaning. from what i'm told, infections can sometimes develop after a cleaning. concerned, i called the office and spoke with the secretary, who relayed my message to dr. state. i was curtly told by the secretary [paraphrasing]: "all of our equipment is sterile; it's not our fault." i wasn't blaming anyone, but i was feeling crappy, and it would have been nice if the dentist picked up the phone - or called me back later - and took a minute to reassure me. i've had at least two cleanings every year since i was a kid, and never before have i become ill following one (mouth hurt, fever, etc.) it's because of this reason and a few others, which i won't elaborate on, that i recently decided to find another dentist. read more

I work for New York Presbyterian in the finance department and before that I was a dental assistant for bedside dentist which provides services in different nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. I have worked besides so many doctors and I have never seen such a rude and unprofessional dentist. Working with patients I have encountered different types of personality and always kept my cool to make sure patient feel comfortable for their treatment. I was not the patient but my boyfriend was and this will be a detailed explanation of exactly what happened. the first time he visited seeking dental services she asked what insurance he has and she took his insurance card from his hand and said ok you want to make an appt and so he did. The first appt he went to he referred to her as Señora for respect and in an aggressive way she said NO! its DOCTOR! he said ok I apologize Doctor. He started the process to have a crown done. The next visit I took our toddler daughter and from the beginning I can tell she was bothered by this because she would speak in her language which absolutely doesn't bother me but she would say something and her receptionist would look at me and my daughter. I ignored it. the last appointment we went to was outrageous, he got called in and when she went to speak to him she asked him how he is doing he said im ok but the crown fell off and I can hear everything from the waiting room because everything is open so you can hear her conversations with patient. she started speaking in Spanish and he told her I preferred if you would speak to me in English and right away she was offended you can tell by her reaction. she said oh ok in her attitude ways, he was trying to tell her his gums hurt and he was unable to say it clearly because he had burned his tongue eating soup earlier that day and she was trying to correct him in a rude manner and that's when he told her I'm sorry is that I burned my tongue. in this whole conversation she did not have gloves and I can see her from the waiting area therefore she did not exam the patient. I was waiting and her receptionist came to me and said just be careful with your daughter because the table is not safe it is not a stable table which in my mind I'm thinking so why would you have an unsafe table in the middle of your waiting area but I just said ok no problem. then the Dr. Ligia shouting comes towards me in the waiting area and is screaming I cant I cant with your husband he is aggressive which I never heard him scream. I got up and went to the space where he was and said what going on she said your husband wont let me check his tongue and is being very aggressive which was not true because in the whole conversation I am personally looking at her and she did not once asked for him to open his mouth besides the fact that she never put on gloves. while speaking. Then she made a remark that I was offended by she said we are not in the streets and she said something like mamasita I did not understand what she was trying to say by that but i asked her did he disrespect you in that way and she said no not at all so she was just blurting out things that were absolutely irrelevant. this whole time my boyfriend was sitting I didn't see him do anything that might have scared her to think he would do something aggressive. when I was speaking to her he said WTF? like what you are saying is not true. then she started shouting get out get out i will call the cops. I was trying to figure out why she wanted to do that because not once did i shout to her I was trying to alleviate the situation my boyfriend before that said I apologize if you were offended by me asking you that I preferred you to speak in English this lady continue to scream and the reason why he apologized not even being wrong was because he wanted to finish his treatment because his crown kept falling off. and he did not want to be coming in to the office weekly. my boyfriend got up and she said leave the crown and I will return the money to your insurance so he took off the crown and placed it on a table we were walking out and she still shouting and she tells me I don't know how you deal with him she stated I don't know if he beats you up. that is exactly when I got so upset because that comment was crazy and there is absolutely no reason to even say that I told her you are a Doctor you went to school to receive your title but you have no principles and you are so unprofessional. she also said she will call child services which I have no idea why because my daughter is extremely healthy thank God and she is not abused I was so astonished by her remarks that I never in my life wrote a review but this is something that I definitely could not let go by. Never had a situation or experience like this. I do wish her peace and hopefully she learns how to speak to people because patients are the ones that pay for her education and living and so that she can be successful. read more

I'm 31 years old and this has been the worst dental experience of my life. I made an appointment for a simple 6 month cleaning. The dentist arrived late into the office while yelling on the phone on what seemed like a personal call. I was then led to a room for some x-rays and my cleaning. I continued to hear her yell on the phone. When the call ended she came into the room to introduce herself and told me she needed to go change, but instead she went back to the front desk, got on another phone call and started yelling. Finally it went quiet so I assumed she was changing. After 15 minutes I heard her yell that she was looking for her shoes. She came out and started to get ready to work with me, but then she left and said she needed to take yet another phone call. She once again started yelling on the phone and then finally came back to the room. So far 30 minutes had past since my appointment time. She washed her hands and then proceeded to touch the thermostat, the doors, and change the volume on the TV, but she did not wash her hands again, after touching everything, when she started to work with me. Thank God she put on gloves! She started working at very rough 100 mph speed and she did not clean my teeth in any order. She was going so fast that she missed cleaning some teeth. She continued to scrape the same areas multiple times while missing other sections of my mouth. All of the water that was going into my mouth was dripping down my neck and onto my shirt, leaving an uncomfortable mess. I finally walked out and my wife asked me, "What's that green stuff all over your face?" The dentist didn't even bother wipe my face or give me a napkin after she made a mess. The cleaning itself took about 7 minutes (fastest cleaning ever...not good). The other 45 minutes was waiting for the dentist and hearing her yell on multiple phone calls. As we were leaving she didn't even bother to say goodbye or ask if I wanted to make another appointment. I had to say my farewells by the door for her to even notice that I was leaving. read more

Dr. State does the highest quality dental work at the most affordable prices you have ever seen. If she does a filling it will never fall out. If you get implants it is like they are set in stone. I have referred plenty of friends to her who had their fillings and implants done by other dentists who lacked skill and used cheap materials. Read the "UNRECOMMENDED" reviews and see for yourself **** I've used ZocDoc a few times and have never had a bad experience but wow I feel so deceived by these high reviews about this dentist. Please excuse the length, but I am APPALLED. I have never seen this level of unprofessionalism. EVER. Went in for a tooth extraction as I had called in advance to confirm that they do indeed, do extractions. Took off of work, spent cab money, and really needed the extraction THAT DAY. I had a bad vibe from the moment I stepped into the office. Aside from the fact that there was no privacy, I could see and hear the dentist working on other patients. She was very unprofessional to begin with. Chatting on her cell phone, being extremely loud and had the demeanor of a high school student. Maybe that works for some people but I should've went with my gut! Her assistant mentioned me getting a cleaning about 3 times and I had to correct her that I'm there for an extraction. Red flag, but figured it was a mixup in paperwork, no biggy. Dentist comes in and insists she do a cleaning, and I correct her and say I'm there for an extraction. She laughs and says she does not do extractions. What? I begin to explain to her that I called in advance and the front desk lady confirmed with me that they do extractions otherwise I would've went to a different dentist. (Not to mention the 12x I mentioned the word "extraction" since I had been there). She says "well, I can only extract some teeth, you should've clarified better when you called" again, WHAT? First, Do you do extractions or don't you? And secondly, you're blaming me? How about apologizing for the confusion or misunderstanding or the very least, NOT be condescending? Isn't that the job of your staff or yourself to ask the questions and be thorough? How am I supposed to know that by telling me you do extractions it meant only "some teeth" To make matters worse, she continues to tell me I have a bad attitude and she doesn't know why I'm upset. Again, WHAT? Who wouldn't be upset for wasting time, money, and stress then getting blamed for the mistake of HER staff without the very least an apology for the trouble. Obviously I was completely uncomfortable and disturbed by the attitude of this dentist and decide there's no way I'd trust her with all those sharp implements so I decide to go. My family and I have been with this dentist for a long time.I have recommended her to many of my friends and family.She really takes her time to explain about our oral health in depth.Today,I was with my sister-in-law for her first dental visit in this country.As she was filling up the new patient form,the doctor said let me have your insurance and I'd card and she would do it with her.She started yelling and said it is a 10 minute work I said she is new to this country and she is not familiar with the system(Mind you her appointment was at10:30,we got there around 10:26 & everything started around 10:35).She got louder and said then she should have stayed where she is from.I politely asked her to turn her volume down.She kept on going by saying I worked late yesterday,I am human too.I was really sadden by the way she treated us because I was there a week ago and have been going there for a long time.I respected and trusted her a lot.So,I told her the way she was talking to me was really hurtful and I almost cried.She said you need help with mental health and this is not the place.I decided to sit down and kept quite.She kept on going.She gave us my sister-in-law's ID and insurance card and told us to leave.This was a worst experience ever and I am still in shock that a person whom I felt like I had build a good doctor patient relationship bashed me and asked us to Leave.This is just my hope and wish that she will not use such language to anyone despite of their origin,color or the insurance that the patients have.Good luck and you Lost few dedicated patients. read more
