DO NOT LET DENTIST ANGELO TAKOS TOUCH YOUR MOUTH I visited Dentist Angelo Takos for a cleaning and X-ray. He explained that I had what he referred to as 'micro-cavities' and a small crack in a previously done filling, which he claimed could be easily repaired using a 'laser'... due to the fact that the crack in the filling was still small in size. Angelo explained that the 'Lazer' essentially attacks the decayed area, therefore ridding the area of decay, but should only be used in minor/smaller cases. Fast forward three months, the same filling is now fully cracked. I went back to Angelo Takos to have him X-ray and fix the tooth. He said nothing was wrong with the tooth and quickly moved onto his next patient. It was a 4pm appointment. In retrospect, I now know that he was avoiding me and did not want to address the obvious issue. Confused by his misdiagnosis, and still in pain, I went to a new dentist who informed me that I would need a root canal due to underlying decay left behind from the 'Lazer' repair previously attempted by Dentist Angelo Takos. She showed me the X-ray and it's as clear as day. How could Dentist Angelo Takos overlook this detail?... because it was work that he was responsible for and would need to fix. This would require Angelo to admit to having done short handed work, and fix his mistakes... Unfortunately, Dentist Angelo Takos, with his Lazer toys and overly inflated ego, doesn't have the backbone to admit his mistakes. I called Angelo Takos to tell him about the diagnosis from my new dentist, and my need for a root canal. I asked Angelo Takos why he didn't address his previous work, and he told me in an email that the X-ray he took did not include that specific tooth in frame. I asked him to send me the images of the X-ray and upon receiving the images, it's clear the images had been enlarged to crop out the tooth in question. Each X-ray only had two to three really large teeth in frame. Other X-ray's I've had show the entire jawline, including the front teeth all the way back to the molars. These X-rays had been enlarged, with each tooth now being really big and only showing two to three teeth in each X-ray, therefore conveniently cropping out the tooth in question. I WAS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY DENTIST ANGELO TAKOS. BOTTOM LINE. STAY AWAY FROM DENTIST ANGELO TAKOS AT ALL COSTS. read more

Five Stars for a dentist office.... I must be crazy, or they must be giving out free puppies with every visit! When you find yourself looking for a new doctor of any kind you usually turn to your friends. But after looking up all my friend 'glowing' recommendations on yelp and not seeing more then 3-stars, I started to wonder, "Could my IRL friends and my Yelp friends be that different from each other?!" So as the pain in my tooth began to take over my whole face I walked by Dr. Takos office on my way home and looked it up on my yelp app as I rode my elevator. 5 -stars!?! A dentist with 5-stars?! I called to make an appointment. The receptionist was very helpful and asked enough questions to realize that I pretty much couldn't eat, meant I should be seen sooner than later. The were able to fit me in the next morning. The office is clean, bright and a pleasant environment, and to top that all off it doesn't smell a thing like any doctors office. I'm taking to the exam room, have some x-rays done, and I waited 15 minutes for the Doctor to see me. Dr. Takos has one of the most pleasant 'chair side' manners I have ever experienced in a doctor. He asked lots of questions, and never rushed me, or himself. He explained everything to me and made sure I understood the next two months, which would result in my root cannel and brand new fancy crown. Plus, he has a wonderful sense of humor. Because of the massive infection I had at the time, I had to go on an antibiotic before he could start any dental surgery, so I took my prescription and booked my appointment. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call two days later from Dr. Takos wanting to know if the pain had gone down any and to just check in on how I was doing. (such a wonderful touch) All of my appointments with Dr. Takos have been pleasant and surprisingly not painful. He and his entire staff made me feel comfortable and helped with any questions I had. I also was pleased at how the staff would check in on me when I was at home, as well as their wonderful 24-hour emergency service if you need it. I can't recommend Dr. Takos more! If you need to get your chompers looked at he's the man for the job! He's so good he doesn't need to give out free puppies. read more

I can't believe I haven't written Dr. Takos (and Anna) a review yet! After years of going to questionable dentists and having a multitude of orthodonture work (therefore scarring me psychologically!), I finally feel comfortable going to the dentist. Anna is gentle and very thorough! She is also direct, and always lets me know if something is coming that I don't like (I hate cold air and scraping). Anna always soothes your nerves by talking to you, and it always astounds me how much she remembers about your life. She is truly a gem and hands down the best hygienist I've ever had. You can tell that Dr. Takos really cares about his patients and wants them to have their best smile possible. He has given me great advice regarding my tooth sensitivity, and he's never tried to advertise any unnecessary procedures or appliances. His wife at the front desk is also amazing. For some reason, I had unresolved insurance issues, and she made sure to get on the phone with them and clear it up immediately. She was also very upfront with pricing for Invisalign and whitening, and called my insurance right away to figure out what their contribution to orthodontics would be. I went to Dr. Takos April, 2013 based on the good reviews on yelp. I disregarded the negative reviews as there were more positives than negatives. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience and would not recommend this office. First thing, I had to wait over an hour in the waiting room because Dr. Takos had an emergency. I understand emergencies happen, but no one informed me of this and it was already 40 minutes into waiting. Because I don't live close to the office, I had no choice than to wait. I was absolutely frustrated at that point. I didn't write a review then because I figured it wasn't that serious. Dr. Takos is informative, but a bit too much where he's giving you more than what you're really there for and what you really want to know at that moment. I felt rush, although he was telling me all types of info, but by the time he asked if I had any questions, I had already forgotten them! Anyway...I decided to look for a new dentist, which I found. After 9 months (now, January), I receive an invoice from Dr. Takos' office for $129 that says "balance forward." WTH is "balance forward??" No explanations whatsoever. I don't understand why they would send me a bill after such a long time! I contacted the office and they sent me the patient ledger and my insurance summary. Now, I've had my insurance (Metlife) for 8 years and never ever had to pay out of pocket for cleaning and evaluation. Dr. Takos decided to do a panoramic xray and additional xrays without letting me know that insurance may not cover these expenses or what I may be eligible for. When I give my insurance information to a dental/dr. office, they usually check to see what i'm covered for before doing any sort of procedure. Dr. Takos credited the panoramic xray, but because he took additional xrays, it was considered as a full mouth xray which i wasn't covered for since I was within my 5 year since my last full mouth xrays. So make sure you ask them what you are covered for before doing ANYTHING! read more

I've been lucky and have only gone to really great dentists. I would recommend any of them, but Dr. Takos is absolutely the most fabulous dentist that I've ever gone to. I can't believe that I'm raving about a dentist, but he's just that incredible. He's sooo nice, cheerful, and polite. And his staff is great too! I needed a new dentist and thanks to Yelp, I found Dr. Takos. He really truly cares about his patients and I could tell that he just loves being a dentist. He takes his time to meet you, explains to you in careful detail why it's important for him to know what medication you're on (even if you think it's unrelated to your teeth, he explains how it is related to your teeth) and he carefully goes through explaining your insurance (what they cover, don't cover, etc) so you know exactly what you're going to get billed for BEFORE you get the procedures. NO SURPRISES. He's non-judgmental and doesn't make you feel bad or guilty about anything. Instead he makes you feel good for being there. Why wouldn't I want to go to him? He's very thorough. He's also one of the few dentists who actually screens for oral cancer. Did you know that incidences of oral cancer is rising in women between the ages of 20 and 35? It's because of HPV-16 virus (the same one that causes cervical cancer). If oral cancer is caught in the early stages, there's a 99% chance of survival. If oral cancer isn't found until it shows up in the surface, it drops to 50%. Prevention and early detection is the key! Before any procedure, he explains what he's going to do and what you can expect. I needed three small cavities filled and he only does white filling, which means laser dentistry. No drilling, no novocaine, no pain, can't tell there's been a filling, and when you leave, you can eat right away! And I'm serious about the no pain! The whole experience is about as pleasant and fun as a cavity filling can be. I totally trusted Dr. Takos and his adroit hands. I almost want another cavity because the whole experience was so easy and pleasant. Almost. Not quite. 1000% recommended. Let me just say that Astoria Dental Arts and Dr. Angelo Takos is the best dental practice on the planet! Dr. Takos is a warm, friendly and funny man who takes pride in his work and genuinely cares about his patients. The office is a smallish, homey, spotless facility and the staff is attentive, caring, skilled, friendly and will even hold your hand. :) Dr. Takos caters to both cosmetic and problem mouths, but treats you like you're his ONLY patient. They also take very good care of Dental Phobics like myself who have nervous breakdowns upon entering a dentists office. I have great anxiety when it comes to dental work, yet I managed to go to him several times in a month to take care of multiple problems and NOT have nightmares. They have fancy new x-ray stuff and also a new water laser that requires NO novocaine and is virtually PAINLESS! I recommend Dr. Takos to EVERYONE and ANYONE who asks. Unless you have serious problems, when one goes to a dentist, the skill of the dentist is not really an issue. Most dentists can competently drill and fill a cavity. Most dentists can make easy decisions. Unless you have a more serious issue, it's always the hygienists that are more important. I've been here twice, and the hygienists have both been A+. Gentle, thorough, empathetic, friendly. Dr. Takos really hires the best people. The staff is also excellent. Friendly, chatty, helpful. I've had 4 dentists in my life that are so good that I actually think to myself "Wow, I hope this person will be my dentist for the rest of my life". They left such an impression on me, that I still remember them... Wendy Goodman in the 80's (she's actually a periodontal surgeon), Richard Kennedy in San Francisco in the 90's, Vitali Trachuck in the late 2000's, and now Dr. Takos. My dental life consists of wading through OK dentists in the search for giant luminaries like these people. He is loved by his staff as well as his clients for good reason. He's one of the most amiable guys I've ever met. Disalarming, interesting, friendly, cheerful. He strikes me as someone who keeps on top of new developments and not only has an academic interest in developments in dentistry, but puts those developments into practice, which is what the customer essentially wants. I can't say enough good things about him. The only minus about the practice is that it might be too popular. Weight times for scheduling is a little ridiculous. But if you know and keep your 6 month appointment target dates on your calendar, you can schedule ahead of time. I'm certain they leave holes in the scheduling to take emergency cases (at least, I hope they do, and I hope I never have to find out). Everyone I know says he's the best dentist in Astoria, and based on my previous dentist experiences, I would have to agree with that assessment. read more

When I moved to Astoria, I used to travel 2 hours back home whenever I needed to go to the dentist because I didn't feel comfortable trying out a new dentist. Finally I decided to give one down here a shot. I listened to the review of Dr. Takos and they were all 100% accurate. In my first two visits, I have met Dr. Takos and three members of his staff (the receptionist, the hygenist, and I guess his assistant dentist). All of them are EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. They always explained what they were doing and why. Very informative. They are personable and keep you loose by being funny. They always make sure that you are feeling no pain and that everything is alright. The rooms are all nice looking and clean. I just had my first root canal today and it was a painless experience. I can't say enough good things about the work Dr. Takos does. I am recommending Dr. Takos to all my friends and I finally signed up on YELP just so I could write this review. I've had good experiences at Dr. Takos' office. I've had my teeth cleaned by both hygienists, and both were competent and professional. I've had an exam with Dr. Takos, after which I received laser fillings for small cavities. Another reviewer felt these were a scam. If they are a scam, they're not a very good scam, because they cost less than standard fillings (only $105). I don't recall being shown the cavities on a high powered camera, but I tend to forget things. Dr. Takos was cordial but seemed a bit rushed during my procedure, though I have no reason to doubt that the work was done well. One star off because I had to wait a little over an hour for my appointment. I understand that can happen but, as another reviewer mentioned, I think the staff should inform patients when there is a long wait, to avoid frustration, and in case they need to reschedule. read more

When I moved from France to NYC, finding a good dentist was one of my main medical concerns as I have always had a tendency to easily develop cavities and need to keep my mouth in check very often. Definitely a five star for this place! Although the wait was a bit long, my visit was worth it. I was looking for a good endodontist because I recently had a root canal done by a former dentist, and they didn't finish the job when they supposedly said it was done. So, after a while, my tooth got infected and needed to be treated. I was afraid that extraction or surgery was needed 'cause.. Google doesn't do a good job explaining the options for MY personal situation. The assistant lead me from the amazing receptionist room to an examination room where they took an X-ray of my right lateral incisor. Dr. Takos explains everything that you need to know, so you know exactly what he is going to do and why he needs to do so. His great 'chair side manners' calmed me even if my mouth had shooting pains and all that jazz. He even tells my mom and I that we could call his personal number if I had some complications or any discomfort with my teeth and needed to reach him. NEVER HAVE I EVER LOVED MY DENTAL VISIT THIS MUCH! SERIOUSLY, HE IS A MUST. If he's not your dentist, switch to him nooow! Not a competitor sir. A patient who got screwed by you and who's wife had to endure countless root canals, stress, anxiety and pain because you didn't do her bridge properly. You absolutely put "man teeth" on her. Her bridge looked like mans teeth. Her new bridge, that she should NEVER HAVE HAD TO HAVE, looks like it should. The difference is astonishing. The new dentist showed us in pictures what you put on her. It was alarming and infuriating. And you have no clue what you are talking about. She lived it. The discoloration was awful. We paid thousands of dollars for nothing. THIS IS THE TRUTH and it's too bad you can't except that you are not perfect. This was when you were off of 30th avenue. AND my wife did talk to you and call and complain but you did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. She told you exactly how she was feeling and what was going on and you offered NO solutions. She even began to get bad breath because her bridge wasn't on properly so food would go into it. You screwed her up big time and she has no interest in speaking with you. She was traumatized by the whole experience with you. Luckily she found someone who did the job CORRECTLY. And if I were a competitor, all I'd have to do would if I wanted to hurt you would be make up 20 dummy Yelp accounts and post 1 star. I came here to post about you so others would know. UPDATE - So I thought I would post an update to this saga. A few weeks ago, the fused porcelain-only crown broke. Again. Just under 2 years. I have decided to go to another dentist. I will need to replace the crown, again, which is not inexpensive as you may imagine. I was really hoping the crown would last a long long time and that my discomfort and suspicions about the original crown would be laid to rest. Unfortunately that is not the case. Dentistry is not an exact science it seems. This reflects my experience. I suspect I will be contacted directly by Dr. Takos again, as he did when he read my last review on Yelp. I am again torn on how to rate this update. I really hate to give low reviews, but I like to give honest reviews. How would you rate this experience had it been you? I have had one appointment with Dr. Takos, and so far I don't have one negative thing to say about him or his staff. I really loved my former dentist, but I moved out of state and needed to try a new dentist for a cleaning. Based on the excellent reviews I found here, I made an appointment. It sounds absurd to say, but I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to this dentist! When I got to the office, I probably sat down for a total of 30 seconds before the hygienist took me back. She was very friendly and put me at ease. I enjoyed talking to her as she prepped tools for the cleaning. She was extremely thorough, knowledgable, and gentle. After she finished, she informed Dr. Takos that I was ready for him. At the time he was still performing surgery on another patient and determined it might be another 20 minutes before he could see me. The receptionist asked me if I was in a hurry and explained the situation to me, and was very apologetic. I told her I was in no rush and that is was fine. Dr. Takos came in maybe 10 minutes later and apologized profusely for my wait. Dr. Takos is kind, funny, and obviously very passionate about dentistry. He explained that he wanted to perform an oral cancer screening as well as check for TMJ disorders, neither of which had ever been suggested or performed by any other dentist I've seen. Although Dr. Takos is very knowledgable about TMJ, he recommended I see a leading TMJ specialist. He suggested that the migraines I've suffered with for almost my whole life are probably related to the popping in my jaw, and felt that I would be better served by being treated by the specialist. If that ends up working out, I will give Dr. Takos my first-born child. After the oral cancer screening, he examined my teeth and discovered a couple of cavities, for which we discussed a treatment plan. I asked him about whitening procedures, and he described the treatments he offers and recommended some over-the-counter stuff. I never once felt like he was suggesting unnecessary treatment or pushing more expensive options. So overall, Dr. Takos and his staff are amazing, and I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

The one bad thing about Dr. Takos is he seems so popular that sometimes your wait might go into 30-60 minutes after your appointment time. Honestly, I think it's worth it because he is so friggin good that I really don't want another dentist. I wish I could have him as my dentist for the rest of my life. Unfortunately he moved his office farther from my home. I will still go to him instead of changing my dentist. So on to the good stuff. Dr. Takos is so incredibly thorough when he explains stuff to you, it just makes you feel better. I learned so much. NO other dentist tells you all the stuff Dr. Takos does. He also cares enough to do a lot of extra stuff to make sure that you are in the best health. That's one thing that really makes him stand out to me, is that he genuinely seems to care about others. He makes totally sure that you are doing well. To the point where they've got some expensive laser machine that does painless dentistry on some procedures. I think that says a lot about how he cares about his patients' fears. He wants people to feel safe and welcome. Then when you get into the chair, it's fine! Because he's constantly putting you at ease, he's always explaining EXACTLY what he is doing at any given time, lets you know how everything is going. I can't tell you how comforting it is. And the procedures I got from him were all 100% painless. I'm not joking. EVEN the numbing shot he gave me, where that's supposed to sting, it did NOT. He used the shaking technique to make you not feel it, it's something I've only seen one other person do and I wish all doctors and nurses did it. Seriously, if you're going to the dentist and he gives you a shot and even THAT is painless, that's a good dentist. GO. read more

Dr. Takos removed my wisdom tooth for me..oh gosh I can't start to begin as to how nervous I was doing this procedure..Once I sat down in the chair he explained exactly what was going to happen and promised me that everything was going to go great and not to worry...he gave me my injection so that I could get numb..Anna his lovely assistant stayed right next to me and spoke to me..also making me feel very comfortable..at one point Dr. Takos looked at my tooth..I closed my eyes..a few minutes passed by and he told me Kat you did great..we're all done. I was amazed..I didn't feel anything!!!!!!!!!!!! So delicate and smooth..he's the best. The hygienists are amazing as well......I give them a 10!!!!! read more

No worries, now! I also saw many great posts and thought this was a wise selection. Good Salesman, bad dentist. Beautiful office, excellent customer service. During my cleaning his hygienist was trying to pull out my dental work. She did a good job. I went home with a sore mouth and sensitivity. I needed a lot of work done... I had all the work done there. Then, I had complications. Poor workmanship, doesn't stand behind his work. He charges to repair his own work. He also warned me that I was going to need more work done. Que: my exit.... I ended up paying a fortune to correct his mistake. Found a great dentist in Manhattan who repaired what was broken and told me I needed a good cleaning... Really ? I guess this hygienist was too busy pulling out dental work to actually clean my teeth. Staff is great. Cleanliness & technology is great. Follow up & availability great. It is the work that is poor. The fact that he doesn't stand by his work is another problem. I don't think it is the materials used nor the condition of my teeth. I think it is lack of understanding how the materials are to be used. It seems like all the bad reviews are for the same reason. The work is faulty. I actually travel from Manhattan to see Dr. Takos and team. I first started go because his dental hygienist, John, was BY FAR the best hygienist I had ever seen. (He is still the best.) I Love Dr Takos and all the girls that work there! They are so great and nice every time I call or visit! Dr. Takos does awesome work! For years I had a tooth in the front of my mouth that was broken in half and every dentist I went to never made it look good the bonding always looked awful, i.e. not matching colors and just looking fake! Best dentist in the world! I chipped my tooth at 9pm the night before a big meeting with my boss and he took me right away. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Takos and his entire crew. I've had to have a lot of dental work, blessed with horrible genes for teeth! But I have never felt better about a dentist. He explains everything to you and takes care of you as if you are a family member. I cannot believe I almost look forward to going to the dentist. If you need a new dentist... GO! I found Dr. Takos and Astoria Dental Arts here on Yelp!, and I have to say he and his staff have lived up to the rave reviews -- and let me tell you, I've spent some time in his office now over the past couple of months! It had, let's just say, been a little while since I had been to the dentist, and it turned out, unfortunately, I had more than a little work that needed to be done -- several cavities in need of filling, and ultimately two of my teeth needed of root canals. It took several appointments to get all of the work done, and all I can say is that Dr. T. isn't just a dentist, he's a CRAFTSMAN. You almost can't tell that my teeth have been worked on -- the shape and fit of the crowns and fillings is excellent, and the color match is SUPERB. It's obvious that the Dr. takes a lot of pride in his work and it shows in the quality of the finished product. He's explained to me a little bit about some of the materials and techniques he uses, and they are nothing less than state-of-the-art. He works meticulously, but quickly and efficiently, and I never experienced any pain. I had never had a root canal before, but I have heard they can be painful and lengthy, hours long and sometimes spanning multiple visits. I still would prefer never to have another one, but the Dr. can typically do one painlessly in about an hour or less, at least in my experience. If I had to have one again, I would absolutely want him to be the one to do it. On top of his excellent work, he's friendly, funny, and his staff is very accommodating. Pauline, the receptionist, is super-friendly and was quite helpful with insurance concerns. John, the hygienist, is excellent and thorough. Anna and Suzy, the Dr.'s assistants, are friendly and do a nice job of keeping the mood light. The practice very recently moved into a new office, and it is VERY nice. My only comment in the negative would be that in my numerous trips to their office, I have had to wait every time, and on a couple of occasions, the wait was lengthy (although once the doctor was dealing with an emergency patient). But then, isn't there ALWAYS a wait at any doctor's office? It doesn't matter -- this is an exceptional practice and fully merits a five-star rating. read more

Knowledgeable and caring staff. Dr Tacos has that gentle touch that every dentist should have. He thoroughly explained my condition and my options in a caring way. The office has all the latest state of the art equipment. It was just an amazing experience!!! read more
