Simply put, Starting Strength Dallas changed my life. Low back injuries made it hard to be the kind of mom I wanted to be (active, hands-on, physical, and adventurous). But, through Jayne and Brent's patient, consistent coaching; and Starting Strength's powerful programming; I've gotten my life back. My back issues are resolved; and I am the mom I always wanted to be. I do not consider myself a weightlifting type. I was more of a cardio/yoga/10 pound hand weights type. Then, my first son was born, and my back issues got worse. I kept throwing my back out doing baby-related activities (lifting the stroller out of the car; carrying my baby). I was afraid to travel with my son for fear that I might throw my back out en route. I had always wanted to be an active mom, and these back issues were preventing me from being the mom I wanted to be. So, I went to physical therapy; got serious about back stretches and exercises...nothing seemed to make a difference. Until Starting Strength Dallas. I started the program skeptical -- I had never really trained before; and I was concerned that training could make my injuries worse. Boy was I wrong. Within 2 months of joining Starting Strength, my back injury had resolved. Jayne was my first coach; and she was patient, understanding, consistent, and helpful. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing; but she made the experience anything but intimidating. Slowly and consistently, she helped me get stronger and stronger...until I was fully comfortable traveling alone with my son; and living the adventurous life I had dreamed of for myself. I got pregnant again, and vowed to stick with the program through the pregnancy so that I could be as strong as possible through the delivery and recovery process (pending my doctors approval). It was a high-risk pregnancy likely to end in c section; but I knew that staying strong would help with the recovery. Then, the pandemic hit...and threw a wrench in those plans. Though my doctor was comfortable with me continuing weight training, she wasn't comfortable with me doing so at a gym. I worried I would lose all of my progress; and that my second pregnancy recovery would look like my first -- injury-ridden and confidence-killing. Enter Brent and Jayne. They bent over backwards to come up with a program that enabled me to keep training. Brent would come to my house (specifically to my garage, which we kept open to the outside) to train with me once a week. And Jayne would coach me virtually by video twice per week. They showed up for me in a big way. Over the course of the pandemic and throughout my pregnancy, through the dead of Dallas summer, Brent showed up at my (steamy, buggy) garage every week. He adjusted exercises to accommodate my changing body; he wore a mask and kept distance the entire time. He was kind, dedicated, consistent, patient, flexible, encouraging...and he made getting stronger fun! With Brent and Jayne's help, I trained until the day before my c section. The baby is perfect; and my recovery was about 80% easier than my recovery from my first c section -- no back issues, no mobility problems. In my case I used to work mostly with my hands but over the years my lower back bothered me more and more so I switched to mostly desk work. I was told by doctors I have sciatica and to do stretches. I did stretches daily for several months but it had almost zero effect. I was convinced my back pain was irreversible so I dealt with it by avoiding things that made the pain worse. First couple weeks at Starting Strength I was concerned that bar bell lifting was going to cause me a lot of pain. I couldn't have been more wrong! I'm happy to report that within 3 weeks of lifting at Starting Strength my constant 1 or 2 out of 10 pain level dropped to zero. ZERO AND HOLDING FOR OVER A YEAR! With the exception of a one week period where my back was tweaked about a month ago. Very minor pain. Do I occasionally get a sore muscle here and there? Yep but it doesn't even register as a 1/10 in pain. And it's a totally different pain vs the sciatica thing. I do still have twinges and weird numbness due to sciatica but NOT pain like before. I will likely have back pain again in my life but I will lift until the day I die because now I know it was a strength issue that only lifting could address. Before joining starting strength, I had never performed a squat or deadlift as I was afraid of hurting myself. I can now do a body-weight squat and deadlift, and am confident that I can keep getting stronger, safely. The program and business model is very good. While it is expensive, you are getting quality coaching for every lift. Which means that the coach can correct your form between sets and, sometimes, between reps. To receive that coaching anywhere else, you would have to spend at least 80 a session--here you'll spend half of that, and for a starting strength certified coach at that. Plus, the camaraderie with the other gym members is great. It's fun and a community. When you see what other people can lift, it's inspiring as it shows other 'normal' people can achieve. I've seen many, many people squat 315, deadlift 405, and press 135. Before coming, anything above 225 looked 'heavy' too me. My goals are much higher now thanks to my coaches Jordan and Jeyne. read more

I have had quite a few problems with back and knee pain due to old injuries. In an effort to improve my health, I had tried lifting some weights on my own in the past but always found it difficult to progress very far without exacerbating my injuries. Ultimately, after doing some research, I stumbled across this gym and decided to give it a go. Brent and Matt worked with me and after a couple of months my knee pain has drastically improved (it still flares up from time to time, but it is much much better). My back pain took a bit longer to resolve, but 4 months in and I feel better than I have in years. One of my biggest takeaways from this experience, is just how important it is to have a knowledgeable professional coaching you through the process. There is much more to picking things up and putting them down again than you would think. The place to fight off aging! As a physician, I can say that the mobility decline we think of as "normal" does not have to happen. I'm also older, female and a long time klutz who hated any kind of activity in my younger years. I have never done well in any type of exercise class- was never able to keep up, and most classes can't modify the movements enough to accommodate my limitations. This gym is different. It's not a class but a group coaching session, where the coach helps everyone to build strength by making any needed modifications for the individual. Strength is so critical for maintaining your independence as you get older, and this is a very supportive place. The lifters in each group are all very supportive of one another and the coaches truly want everyone to make progress. The coaching is based on a deep understanding of the movements needed to stay mobile and functional. Everyone over 50 should be doing this! read more

This place is perfect for people who want to start lifting weights. The gym itself is clean and very well put together. The equipment is top notch. The attention to detail on your form is unreal. They watch every rep and know the exact cues to give you for improvement. I've been coming here for about a month and my results blew my socks off. You are way stronger than you think and you'll learn that here. I can't stress enough, if you are new to lifting weights this is the place to start. Brent, the gym owner, is a stand up guy, and you can tell he really cares about his members and their progress. Jordan (my trainer specifically) has A very impressive knowledge about all of the lifts and gives amazing feedback and is probably the only reason I was able to make so much progress injury free so fast. Training at Starting Strength Dallas has dramatically improved my quality of life. I joined at 38, having never trained at all before, and with random lower back pain. In less than one year the program at SSD has me stronger than I have ever been, and eliminated any pain in my lower back. I have played golf for 25 years and nothing has improved my game like the program at SSD. The effects have been astonishing! 20+ yards gained with Driver. 14 yards gained with irons. This gym is is so important in my life. I've learned how essential it is to do Strength Training as you get older. I'm 62 years old and the strength I've gained has been instrumental in working on a horse ranch. I can now go 10 hours of hard manual labor. I do have a antiaging doctor and believe in hormonal replacement and testosterone. That being said she is always impressed with my muscle gain. That's saying a lot for someone my age. The coaches in my opinion are the best. Their instruction and motivation has allowed me to get stronger than I ever believed. The community you form with your fellow lifters encourage you and support you. There is no replacement for Starting Strength. read more

I'm new to Dallas, TX and when I saw there was a dedicated Starting Strength gym I immediately wanted to check it out. I've been familiar with the Starting Strength method, but was never able to have a coach where I lived before. I signed up for the intro training and boy what a difference a coach makes. I definitely wasn't doing things quite right and fixing my form over the first few workouts has made a world of difference. If you're on the fence about getting a barbell coach, sign up for the intro session. You'll be amazed at just how much stronger you really are after dialing in your form. I've done a lot of research about this method and finding a gym that offers it is difficult. I've now gone to my introductory session and 5 classes and have already increased my strength in the squat, press and deadlift more than I thought possible. The trainers are all extremely knowledgeable and generous with their time, monitoring you every step of the way while providing enormous guidance and just the right amount of motivation toward your goals. My squat was stuck at 255 for 5 reps for 2 years and within 3 months of being coached I smashed that PR with 285 for 5 reps. My deadlift has never been stronger. I've been training here for about 2 months now and it's great. The coaches are excellent; although you're training in small groups, there's still a lot of individual attention on each lift.
