Texas Association of Shotokan Karate - Great for Family training

The owner is incredibly caring, but stern. He is truly the third party our child needs to help keep him accountable. I highly recommend this dojo. Most people here have been here for years, but are happy to welcome newcomers into the family.

However, after one class we were convinced this was the place for us. But, I wanted to give it some time to make sure it was a fair and honest review. Here is the scope: Senseis Lee and Matt are incredible and passionate about their instruction which shows in every aspect of their teaching style. Not only are my children stepping up their game and performing strongly but one can see that the children in their class feel a connection to the art as presented by the instructors and are progressing at a solid pace. The instructor-student dynamic is very engaging, and all students regardless of ability are treated with an equal amount of compassion, discipline, and respect which results in every class being a fun and serious karate training season that my girls look forward to attending. Classes are unlimited and scheduled throughout the week which is nice considering our schedule and +20 miles we must drive each way to attend (for us it is worth it). There are no high-pressure sales tactics or crazy 6 + month commitments like some other place (we have looked at a few). Bottom line if you are considering Karate or any martial art for that matter seriously take a look at this studio. It is a great experience on every level!

Personal Experience - Please Read Before Training Here…read more I've been boxing for over 10 years and initially joined McSweeney's in 2021 when the gym first opened. I trusted Coach McSweeney's experience and judgment. Unfortunately, I suffered a serious injury while sparring in December 2024 -- a torn ACL. At the time, I was told to "walk it off," and I did, trusting that it was something minor. I continued to train, despite recurring pain and instability in my knee. The injury worsened over time, and my concerns were often brushed aside. I was told I didn't need surgery and that he had gone through similar injuries himself, which made me delay seeking medical attention. Eventually, my knee gave out during training, and I was forced to get checked. I've now been diagnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus and am scheduled for surgery. I've lost out on job opportunities and missed out on other commitments because of this. I want to be very clear: the community at this gym is great. This isn't about the members. But if you're considering training here, please listen to your body and do not dismiss injuries based on casual advice -- no matter who it comes from. If you're in pain, go see a doctor right away. I'm sharing this not out of bitterness, but to help prevent someone else from going through what I did. I remained respectful and patient throughout the process, but I did not feel supported when I finally brought this up to Coach. I wish I had trusted myself sooner. This is my honest account and not meant to attack anyone personally -- just to raise awareness so others can make informed decisions about their health and training.

Once inside their facility, do not share any personal information....no DL, no bank information, no credit information because if they think they can take advantage of you, this company will do just that. My credit card was ran by this company and when I requested my money back, the owner refused and tried to bully me back into the facility by holding my funds captive. My bank had to force the funds to be released. This guy then proceeds to tell me, "you have time to go to the bank, but not talk to me. The audacity! So all that occurred in April 2023. On 7/8/2023, which would have been the earlies that he could retaliate for my cancelation for the unrequested services, I received a letter from a collection service company for the $300 that my bank requested from Mcsweeney Martial Arts company to be refunded back to my account. Now my credit has been impacted by this company's decision to invoke predatory financial practices toward a consumer who was really considering utilizing their services. Instead I have to fight to clear my credit report of a bogus collection charge. Stay away from Mcsweeney Martial Arts as no one should be at risk for the tactics invoked by this business.

But if you are looking for a place to sharpen your character while you sharpen your skills, Sharpen Iron Academy (SIA) in Plano is in a league of its own. At SIA, you aren't just a number; the professors know you by name and are genuinely vested in your success both on and off the mat. This is a culture of discipline, accountability, and mentorship where the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy is lived daily. Whether it's the kids' classes, the youth program, or the specialized women-only classes, there is a deep level of trust and a guaranteed safe space for every student. It is more than a gym--it is a community and a family where you are pushed to grow in a supportive, high-level environment.

Their Godfather helped me research studios and after reading the CV for their head instructor Professor Henrique it was time to give it a shot. They had a lot of fun during the trial class, but they were nervous to start, not wanting to be away from Mom even though I was only three feet off the mat. Thankfully SIA instructors are not only skilled at keeping students engaged during training, but are very family centered, patient and caring. They were able to connect with each one of my kiddos so that they felt comfortable training as I looked on. By parent teacher conferences in February their preschool teacher let me know that both had grown so much in maturity and confidence and was curious to know what I was doing differently. Almost two years later the twins are well adjusted, focused and always happy when they step off the mat after an hour training session. Professor Henrique, Professor Lucas, Professor Matheus, Coach Queila, Coach Enrique, Coach Ian, Coach Ella, and Coach Anthony have become family and there is no other place I would have my children be twice a week. They offer adult classes in the morning and evening and several of the parents after seeing the transformation in their own children have started to earn their stripes as well.

I signed up for a class here on ClassPass and was also treated rudely for no reason, I guess now I realize it's because I am a woman? This instructor here is a clown and so up his own ass he should teach contortionist lessons. He wouldn't teach me at all and was totally dismissive, he literally told me to go find someone else in class so he could sit off into space on the side in silence. Last time I checked my money was the same as anyone else, if your studio only wants to accept men/professionals, etc then make that clear on the website or class description instead of wasting everyone's time. The tagline on google says "Saekson Janjira Muay Thai is located in the heart of North Dallas, bringing the most authentic Muay Thai to Texas. Classes for kids, adults and fighters." maybe put an asterisk there and say "no women or beginners" mmkay?
