The room I was in appeared to be recently renovated but I truly hope I'm wrong. I will avoid this place in the future. Life is too short to waste money like this. No expense seems to have been spared; over sized showers, floor to ceiling silk curtains, Egyptian cotton, unique and artful antiques, original artwork and art objects abound, yet the space is not over-designed or cluttered. It is serene and peaceful, as was our stay. The O'Neil is an exceptional B&B and I would return again and again. Andy the manager is genuine and welcoming. Complimentary beer (from the local brewery Mother Earth) and water are tucked away in the 1910 refrigerator inside the bank vault, as is Kerig coffee. The space is zoned residential, so The O'Neil does not sell or serve meals/drinks, but plenty of local cafe's within walking distance were a perfect fix. Chef and the Farmer is a 20 second walk across and down the block, as is Mother Earth Brewery, The Boiler Room, and other local attractions. A coffee house was completing its renovation as our trip came to a close. Even if you are drawn to Kinston by A Chef's Life, don't miss the local art scene. Make sure to head up to The Kinston Community Council for the Arts and talk with Rose Clark, a long time Kinston resident and local artist who now teaches welding at the center and has worked with Vivian Howard at C&TF and is responsible for the new but period styled wrought iron railing at The O'Neil. She and her husband are also in the middle of renovating a 4,000 sq. ft. home she picked up for a cool $25,000. We were tickled pink in Kinston, and The O'Neil was the cherry on the cake. When we came back the door was locked. No one answered the doorbell. We called for assistance and were told to enter our room code. Three times that didn't work and neither did the other code we were given. We were told to drive to a sister hotel but our car keys were in the room. We were told someone would be there in 15 minutes. My husband tried entering the last 3 digits of our code and the door opened. We went to our room and packed. As we were leaving a woman opened the outside door explaining that the code worked and that we were being charged for the night. Never once did she apologize. The following Monday I called and asked for the owner's name and contact information. I emailed him about the experience and as of today I haven't heard from him. Very disappointing experience both Amanda Everett, the manager, and Stephen Hill, the owner do not know how to handle customer situations. We also were told that the hotel had problems with the door not opening. Had my husband not figured out how to open the door with only 3 digits we would have been standing on the sidewalk, on a Friday night for 45 minutes.

We had a great experience and the hotel is located in the downtown area so we were close to restaurants.
