I have enjoyed a fantastic time here, whether with romantic interests (candles, plush, great service), mates (relaxing chairs, great wine list, range of cigars) or by myself (pretty waitresses). I'd like to tell you about the menu, but I always had the fillet steak, and for good reason. The grounds are lovely, and the village of Taplow is a lovely place. I would happily bring up a family in this part of the country - and would happily be a regular here. I must admit evenings tended to be pricey, but I think that was more because I was tempted by the wines, port and brandy than any excessive charges!

So if you want to sample some genuine London flavour, come to Maureens. Lovely food, good hot well-made cafe food. Good Pies, really good pies... Do not undermine this place because I am not making any outrageous claims about Maureen's being the best pie in the East End. Endorsement to my claim is with in article (http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/news/maureen_s_pie_shop_gets_thumbs_up_from_dlr_commuters_1_799702). A simple local neighbourhood cafe - not many seats are available. No wifi, minimal decoration with quite depressing grayish tables and chairs. Just look at the crowd. If I must be honest, it is quite bleak and dispiriting but Maureen's is one place that food makes up for it. You forget momentarily what your surroundings are and a tunnel vision forms where all you can see at the other end is your plate of food on white porcelain. Laden with beef stock gravy (vegetarian gravy? Yes, parsley sauce is available; made with water, flour and parsley which is a little bland for my palate), you only talk to your companion when your plate is empty. Then, snap! You are back in Maureen's squarish dining canteen like room. pie and mash GBP 3.00 - The home made steak pie looks small, but the pastry is thin and crispy and the filling is real chunks of good quality beefsteak; very tasty indeed, the gravy glistening but not a put off, the mash is good and fresh. A good filling dish, especially if you add a portion of carrots or peas. sausage, mash and gravy GBP 3.10 - very ordinary. Service although casual was very friendly. Maureen's is a proper East End cafe that does not disappoint. I am proud to have an award winning pie and mash in the neighbourhood! The only exception to this rule of thumb is if you're going for a steak, which is going to run you closer to fifteen quid. For a (delicious, well-cooked) steak. Bonkers. The menu is incredibly broad, and almost all of it is very good (avoid the overpriced Black & White and you're golden). The highlight is almost certainly the meatballs, which come as 10, 15 or 20 beefspheres. Beware, 20 can be challenging for those not strong of stomach. Basil has long been a regular lunchtime expedition at my place of work and I don't doubt it will continue to be for a long time. If I could take any restaurant with me anywhere I go, it would be Basil. Basil Basil Basil. Basil!

That's definitely the vibe of this place--great for working, or for having a meal with buddies. We tried the fried duck eggs and black pudding on toasted sourdough for £6.75 (me) and the eggs florentine for £8.00 (friend). Exchanging bites, we each loved our own and each other's orders. The eggs were fresh, the bread was crisped to perfection, and the accompaniments of hollandaise sauce and salmon for her, and black pudding and micro-greens for me were very tasty. We also ordered coffee, and I was happy to find the filter coffee £1.75 comes with free refills. It was a lovely environment on a brisk March morning; warm inside and full of flowers heralding the arrival of spring. Service was friendly and attentive, and there seemed to be no pressure to move on after dining, since the space is configured as a place to work as well. If I lived closer, I'm sure I'd be at Parlez more often.
