My friends and I went to Afton this past weekend for a quick getaway. Before the trip, I did some…read moreresearch on local coffee roasters, and Happ Coffee was easily at the top of my list. On our way to our Airbnb, a friend and I stopped by Happ, which is located inside an industrial-style building that's incredibly spacious. There's plenty of seating, along with a dedicated area where beans are available for purchase. The barista was really friendly, and we ended up having an in-depth conversation about drink recommendations. When I settled on a cappuccino, he walked me through how each milk option paired with the espresso. I ultimately chose whole milk since it doesn't have an overpowering flavor like almond milk, which allowed the light-roast espresso (an optional upgrade) to really shine. I didn't fully enjoy the cappuccino during the first couple sips because the mouthfeel of the whole milk felt a bit too thick, which didn't pair well with the light roast. However, it became more harmonious as I continued drinking, and the highlight was definitely the bright sweetness of the espresso. I really appreciate a coffee shop that pulls a light-roast espresso well. The barista asked for my thoughts, which I shared, and he then pulled me a shot using their South Paw (house espresso blend) beans to try. I thoroughly enjoyed this light-medium espresso, which was bright and strong, without the unpleasant acidity or bitterness that often follows. I don't typically recommend ordering a straight espresso shot at most coffee shops, but Happ does it well. Overall, it was a great experience -- lovely coffee and friendly baristas who genuinely care about their craft. I left with one of their limited-release coffees (a Peruvian Geisha), which I'm looking forward to trying as a pour-over at home.

She loves them, I thought it was just alright. It was very noisy with all the people and someone was banging on the hinges of the front door. We had some important things to discuss and the noise was making it nearly impossible. I would like to try it again another time and get a coffee drink.

This Charming (yes, a capital C) place opened in downtown Waynesboro, Va as one of the first spots to help turn downtown around. With a miss-mash of antiques everywhere you turn, including old china for serving, you can't escape its eclectic creativeness. It has become a staple for brunch and lunch every day they are open. On a recent Thursday I found my self off from work so I met up with a friend for lunch. They were packed, luckily I knew to call ahead to make a reservation. Highly recommend! Although if you don't, they have a large communal table available too. The great thing about SBL is that everything is great. My favorite soup is the tomato basil bisque. I've had a variety of their salads and sandwiches as well and have never been disappointed. But on Thursdays I just learned, they have the grilled salmon BLT. This thing is massive, messy, and delicious. I may be taking another Thursday off just go eat this thing again.

Two years later we finally drove the 6 hours down and it was worth it. They have an extensive tasting room in their production facility and they welcome you to take a seat and sample every flavor. They had almost 10 flavors on draft when we visited plus many more in bottles and cans in the fridge. They were dog-friendly and extremely welcoming and knowledgeable. Jonathan was awesome. Standout flavors were classic, rosemary pear, and "cold brewcha." (I've tried multiple coffee kombuchas before and most are gross. This one was good enough for us to bring home a growler of it. They nailed it!)

This is for sure a streamlined operation with little in the way of decor or coziness. For me, that doesn't take away from the awesomeness of this place. It is a small taproom, one bar, five seats, and a very sticky floor (it's kombucha!). When you walk in, the smell of kombucha nearly knocks you back through the door. But you knew it was a kombucha place, so I mean, you asked for it. Once you get over those things, the service is always friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic in sharing their love for kombucha. You can sample all of their flavors, which is really cool. There wasn't a flavor I didn't enjoy. And what's more, my anti-kombucha drinking parents even loved several flavors! That's proof of the thoughtful flavor mixing these guys do. A bonus that I didn't know until later, you can mix the flavors too!! My new favorite mix is bluegrass and black raspberry, which I'm calling Black & Blue! I'd say if you're wanting a unique experience and the chance to change your mind on kombucha, give this place a try! I Bucha!
