I enjoy Starbucks quite a lot. I love their drinks and food products, and I want a great future for the company. I understand that they are making sustainable steps such as removing straws and encouraging the use of reusable cups but every time I order a bagel I see them take it out of a little plastic bag and I'm wondering if they could think of more sustainable ways of packaging pastries. I decided to do more research and saw a Reddit user asking if all the pastries come unwrapped. A barista answered and that everything that is displayed and listed in the case comes individually prewrapped. The number of things you can buy from Starbucks that are shown in the case is quite a lot so imagine all the single-use plastic used that is used for all those goodies. I also came across a photo of where they store the wrapped food. There were rows upon rows of the same packaged pastry. So if there are that many of the one kind of pastry, all the options they have would amount to quite a lot of plastic packaging. They may be doing it for sanitary reasons, but a possibly better alternative could be packaging all the pastries of one kind together in one big bag instead of small ones. It would reduce the amount of packaging and would probably be just as clean. A good company must protect its customers, and the biggest threat to Starbucks lovers and haters alike is the plastic crisis. So when Starbucks makes environmentally conscious decisions it benefits everyone. Even though Starbucks is doing a very great thing by trying to reduce waste in many ways, I hope they will find a more sustainable system to package their foods. read more
