I flew in from San Francisco, and went straight to this place for a late-night bite. They serve small plates after 10p which was great! We had chicken fingers/fries which were OK. BUT the potstickers, bread w/goat cheese and green beans were even more yummy! Great cookin' band there too! A bit too loud, but it was 11p. read more

This has been a well known Des Moines spot for some time now. In prior years deservingly known for prompt service and great food and drink. I find myself coming here less these days. Service is slow, and often absent. The beer selection also now leaves something to be desired. Most recently I enjoyed mushy fish tacos while looking at damaged booths and weird art. Worth a try if you are on Ingersoll and have little impetus to try much else. Otherwise until a menu update, some reno, and a major staff overhaul I would not make coming here a priority. read more

Came here with a large group of friends for a birthday celebration and was truly disappointed. I was serviced twice in the 3 hrs I was there. I was there so long because the bill NEVER came. I ordered chips and salsa for myself only to find after everyone started eating that they had been served to the whole group at the other end of the table. I can look past that, but the fact that people in our group had to go up to the bar to get served was unacceptable. Will not come back here or suggest it. read more

Pulled pork pulled on my heart strings. Beyond that, Star Bar is a solid stop on ingersoll. Decent location, looks pretty nice, prices are reasonable, etc. The only issue is inconsistency between menu items (same was true for Raccoon River Brewing Co. RIP). Some things are great, while others are just alright. read more

I have frequented Star Bar since my college days and have always been a fan. The food is delicious, although I will admit I stick with what I know (the turkey, bacon & swiss panini with a side of honey mustard is sinfully good). The beer and martini selection is wide enough for anyone to find something they like, as well. Occasionally on Friday or Saturday nights they have live music, usually an eclectic blend of music styles, which is good free entertainment but it often makes it hard to hear your companions. Unfortunately, I cannot give Star Bar higher than three stars simply because the service I receive is typically average at best. Even when I have visited during off-hours (for example, a 3pm lunch), it takes forever for my food to get to me and even longer to get my check. Expect to wait awhile on almost everything at Star Bar. read more

I like star bar, good place for large groups like work lunches or bday parties. I use to go for happy hour quite a bit as they have a decent selection of beers. I actually do like the food pretty well. Large portions and crispy fries. I like the veggie goat cheese panini, the steak salad, and Scott really likes the steak sandwich. It's a nice place to grab a bite to eat and watch the city roll by from their small patio. read more

I have dined here numerous times and haven't been disappointed. However the most recent was underwhelming. Granted I usually get the same thing but not only was I disappointed so was my dining companion. Maybe it was an off night but with so many places in the vicinity why go here. Also the place seems to have a split personality. On a Saturday night they have live music so be aware that your dining might get interrupted by a band. Repeat visit: same review. Not as good as in the past. read more

I've always had a great time whenever I go here! Their cocktails are fantastic (look out for the lemon drop martini, crazy strong), the crab rangoons are the best I've ever had in my life, you can actually see and taste the crab meat in them, and the garlic parmesan fries are to die for! I've had burgers here only twice (usually just come for the small plates), both times they were cooked perfectly, and everything on them was amazing. I'd highly recommend this for a get together with friends, for some small plates and a few drinks, they've got Angry Orchard on tap, which is a huge selling point for myself. read more

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. There's impressive entertainment at times during the week, and it usually draws quite a crowd. Highly recommended as a must-see in Des Moines. read more

Great food here and always have great service. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a casual restaurant/bar

Close to work so I eat there occasionally. My one dine-in experience was less than extraordinary. Busy time of day so the waitress barely had time for us. However, my carryout experiences have been good. I'm a fan of their burgers & fries. I do hate that when you google them, it doesn't lead you straight to their website or a menu. Almost impossible to find their actual website and menu other than using an alternative site. read more

Best steak salad I've ever had! The steak, blue cheese, greens etc! The vibe at Star Bar is cool & casual! Everything about this place makes it a favorite of mine! Friendly staff to boot! read more

We love to try out new to us restaurants. Checked out the menu and decided to give it a try. We ordered a few appetizers. We started with the goat cheese and bread. The bread and goat cheese was delicious. The garlic "remoulade " was disgusting. It actually tasted like it had been set out for days and was rotten. We also ordered Parmesan fries. Unsure why the Parmesan was only on the bottom of the serving plate and not sure why it wasn't on the fries? We then ordered the chicken strips appetizers. When they arrived, we thought they had brought us fried shrimp. That's what it looked like. Took a bite and the chicken was so dry. Only positive was the martini menu. We will not be back. read more

Stopped in for a working lunch with some colleagues prior to a meeting with a local client. Appreciated the large booths that allowed us to spread out and get some work done. Prices were reasonable... 3 of us ate for less than $40 (no alcohol). read more

Went to the Star Bar for lunch. The atmosphere was casual. They were a little understaffed but our waitress worked hard and was friendly. The lunch menu was a little limited but everything looked good. I heard that they had good burgers so I ordered a cheeseburger medium. Unfortunately, it came out well done. The upside is that it was still delicious, just a little dry. Overall, not a bad place. I'd like to try it for dinner some time. read more

Cajun pasta in Des Moines! I was happy to find it. Pretty tasty.

I loved Star Bar tonight! Went for dinner with a group of good friends from school. It was a little loud for a long table but for an intimate group, it seemed to be good. We could hear each other pretty well. One thing...no drink specials! So weird. But the prices aren't bad and I was so pleased with my food. I had a grilled veggie and goat cheese panini. Yum. It's awesome. So was the potato salad. It's a lovely place. No complaints. Nice atmosphere, great waitstaff, and good food. read more

Some of my favorite meals in Des Moines have been at Starbar, which was recommended by a fellow team member (aka co-worker). Try the catfish tacos with avocado salsa and black beans - really really quite good. But they also make a tasty burger, and the sesame-crusted tuna salad with spinach and oranges is fantastic. Great margaritas, good tap beer selection, too. Great for outdoor dining in the summer, even though Ingersoll Ave doesn't give you much to look at. Staff is always nice, though sometimes a bit slow. I recommend sitting at the bar if you're there to dine alone. read more

I dig this place. I'll be honest, their mixed drinks are not my favorite (i.e. specialty drinks like girly martinis), but I can be just as happy with a cold beer. I like the atmosphere - it's two big, open rooms, and feels clean and welcoming. Even when it's crowded, I've never had much trouble finding a place to sit with a small group of friends. I've also never had bad service here! Our last visit was with a friend for her birthday. We had left another place because of poor service, and we jokingly told our waiter the same. We were a big group of 12+ people, and he was FAST! He had a great attitude despite being busy, got all of our orders out correctly and even did separate checks for us. I had a veggie sandwich, I've also had salad there, it's tasty! read more

Star bar, okay....maybe 2.75 stars I am not enthralled. The menu is okay, with some interesting small plates, but still mostly greasy bar food. The two large rooms are pretty (thank you, hardwood floors and good booths, no contemporary concrete crap) but it is damn loud any time of day. Not their fault but the outdoor patio is cramped and miserable. Really. Last the service is variable, sometimes wonderful but often inattentive. Sorry, Star Bar. read more

Went to star bar on a Saturday afternoon at 12pm. Not busy and only one waitress for the whole place so service was not the best. They had a brunch menu with a small selection of lunch options. Nothing special. If you want drinks at night maybe this is the place to go but it needs a deep clean and more customer service. I will try again at night for drinks and a snack. read more

We really enjoyed the atmosphere here. We got the BBQ chicken egg rolls with mango slasa which were dicious. I had the Cajun pasta which was pretty greasy but what do you expect from a dish with sausage? The food was all nice and hot and arrived at a relaxed pace. The drink menu also had great variety. We're sure to come back again! read more

Star Bar - Sports Bars Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

A group of co-workers meets here once per month over lunch. We keep coming back because the service is terrific and the food is consistently good. Plenty of variety and some good healthy options. My favorite will always be the fish tacos. I love to snag one of the big comfy booths. Also a great spot to grab a drink on the way home from downtown after work. read more

Star Bar is one of my all time favorites. I'm comfortable going there with friends for drinks or one my own for a quick bite. It's got a nice neighborhood feel while still being just a little bit classy (but not pretentious). I love the steak sandwich and the crispy edamame. And they usually have some interesting and tasty desserts, which change frequently. I'm not a huge fan of their brunch on the weekends but it's not bad. The crowd varies depending on the time and night. Parking can be kind of a pain when it's crowded. I always end up going back here because I always know it's going to be good. read more

Service was good, decent beer selection, the burgers are great and decently priced. If you like pink in your burger great (I do). If you don't or just like a little be sure to ask for your burger to be well done. Medium or Medium well does not get you there. But, IMHO, this is one of the better burgers in town in terms of just the burger itself. This is becoming a favorite. They also have live music on weekends. It's a fun place to eat (if you don't need to have a conversation). read more

Our service was horrible, the food has changed for the worse. Told our server that the food was gross and she goes... oh that stinks... it took 2.5 hours for 4 appetizers, 2 beers, 1 cocktail, and one meal. Not what I've come to expect from Star Bar. Had superb service when their AC was out and the food was substantially better then too. read more

Was it just an off day? Dunno, but I was underwhelmed. I'll leave the sloppy service out of the equation and focus on the food. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and chipotle black beans. Yawn! The Cuban sandwich is open to many interpretations, but "boring" shouldn't be one of them. While Star's was toasted nicely (though "standard" bread), the poor combination of too little flavorless pork, too much flavorless ham, zingless pickles and wimpy mustard made for a BORING sandwich. Top that off with plain black beans, and.....zzzzzzzz. read more

Really nice place. Met with an old friend in the evening and it was dark and comfortable. Beer was cold, service was outstanding and the Thai noodle bowl was delicious but more salty than spicy. The Star Bar came recommended to me and I would recommend to others. read more

Perfect spot for lunch on Ingersoll. I think if I could summarize Star Bar in a word it would be unpretentious. Everything on the menu is good but nothing is fancy or expensive. There are vegetarian options (goat cheese and vegetable sandwich is pretty good). The Star Burger is sweet with maple bacon but not too sweet. Lots of tables for big groups or plenty booths for a slightly more intimate setting. This place definitely has the feel of a neighborhood bar without making anyone feel like an outsider. read more

I went with my boyfriend for a quick, new place to grab some food. I ordered the veggie burger and it was really, really bad. This is coming from a vegetarian and I really recommend getting a salad here instead. I also wasn't a fan of the fries here. I just wasn't impressed. That being said, my boyfriend got a regular burger and he said it was ok. We probably won't be going back. read more

Star Bar has been a local favorite for years. Little has changed in terms of the menu, drinks offered, or beers on tap but that's fine with me. Favorites include the Chicken BBQ Egg Rolls with an Anchor Steam draft beer. The Star Bar burger is affordable and always a home run (bacon cheeseburger with your choice of cheese and side). While pleasant year-round, I'm guilty of sneaking off from work early to try and grab a spot on their patio during summer. Definitely one of my favorite patios in the city. There are several cheaper dive bars around Star Bar if you feel like bar hopping afterwards. Great location to start your Friday night. read more

The service is usually slow, but we love the spring rolls with the mango salsa. YUM! And it was super freezing cold in there the last 3 times. read more

Star Bar - Yummy! - Sports Bars Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

I really like Star Bar but lately have noticed the food and drinks seem to be shrinking. Very disappointing.

Star Bar is a solid choice of eating and drinking establishments in the Ingersoll area. The food is always consistent and wait staff is attentive. It's a good spot for lunch and accommodating for larger groups if you call ahead. Their sandwiches are my top choice along with Parmesan fries. Some nights they have live music which is great if you're looking for that, but not if you're planning to talk to the people in your party. Check ahead so you're not surprised. read more

LOVE the Star Bar! Tasty breakfast; the Niman Ranch burger is really good; cool atmosphere; and a great location. Get there early during the week; it fills up fast. read more

This is my first "yelp" review, and only the 8-9th general reviews. Star Bar is is the best local haunt since Francies. The food, at its worst, is good, but usually it exceeds expectation. Really good dinner. Cajun pasta and Star Bar Burger. Job, Junior, and Drew. I say the experience at their bar is the best example of,""upscale casual" right now. read more

Unexpectedly good! Tried the special - steak risotto and my husband had the Cuban sandwich. Both way above par as far a bar food goes. Not amazing by definitely hit the spot and exceeded expectations. Enjoyed the patio on a beautiful fall evening! read more

Food might not be bad, but I have yet to have good service here. They always seem to be understaffed and the wait staff seems to always have better things to do than serve their customers. There are MUCH better places around downtown to go than Star Bar. read more

We can only give a review on the service really, because it was so bad we left before ordering food. Hadn't been here in about 8 years and thought it was time to stop by. It was a Sunday at 11 a.m. We were one of about 8 tables, at least two waiters were noted. We ordered a bloody mary (bland, boring, and no alcohol), coffe so weak it was almost water, and a Mimosa that came in a mixed drink glass with ice (what?). Our waiter was downright rude and after being ignored for 15 minutes to order our food, we decided to just leave. Went one block down to Eatery A and had a wonderful experience as usual. Too many choices in DSM to put up with rude, extremely slow service. Surley it will be another 8 years or more before we would come back. read more

I do love this spot. Get the fish tacos or edamame. Be weary of the blonde bartender with glasses. She plays horrible music and gets an attitude when people call her out. read more
