The best way to enjoy the beauty of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley & Appalachian Mountains is definitely on horseback!

Stunning Appalachian Mountain Views on a New Year's Day Trail Ride The hour-long trail ride we took with Carl through the rolling hills around Star B Stables was the highlight of our Staunton New Year's weekend getaway. The trail we rode on covered a lot of ground through the woods, past an old farmhouse, through a creek, and on hilltops with gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge. Faye was super easy to work with, scheduling a ride for us on New Year's Day. We thought $40 per person was a bargain. Carl was very friendly and we chatted throughout the ride about the history of the property and farm. The horses were all in great condition; the two Walker/Quarter Horses we rode had easy temperaments. The best way to enjoy the beauty of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley & Appalachian Mountains is definitely on horseback. Located just over 10 minutes from downtown Staunton, Star B Stables is definitely something to add to your trip list!

Visited Star B Stables with my boyfriend last weekend and overall it was a good time! Location was easy to find and $40/hour wasn't a bad deal for the trail rides, which included some hills and crossing a stream. Horses seemed healthy and friendly! The tour guides were nice but a little reserved in the beginning. They forgot to tell us we had to pay cash or check so it was a little inconvenient coming to the place and having to leave again to stop by an ATM. Also, could have been a little more exciting if they offered a little bit of trotting as well as explaining the property we were getting a tour of rather than the occasional small talk with a few gaps of awkward silence. Overall, nothing too special but a solid time regardless!

Definitely a recommended horse riding place. I saw in other reviews that the price was a bargain and I 100% agree with that statement. The property we rode on was beautiful! We rode through streams, woods, and meadow areas. The horses were beautiful and well trained. If you're looking for a peaceful ride through a scenic area this is the place to be.

This was such a lovely getaway activity. The trails were diverse enough yet first timer friendly like myself. I highly recommend this place.

Amazing! This family-run guided horseback tour was a great value (cost less for a half-day ride…read morethan the Homestead charges for a one hour ride)! My husband and I enjoyed our cool, sunny late September outing while vacationing and camping in the area. The Outfitters is run by a farming family; some of the trails go through the valleys of their farm. We had a small group of four riders so were able to load up the horses and drive to a wooded trail which was cool and pleasant. The horses were well behaved. The novice riders of the group were given gentler, "follower" horses which didn't cause much ruckus. I have a bit of riding experience (both English and Western, though this outfit is all Western-style) and was given a former "lead" horse named Mickey. Mickey was spirited but responded well to gentle guidance. They are training a new guide horse to lead, and Mickey resented not being the leader and would occasionally try to nip his rump or pass him to take the lead. The thing with horses are that they are not very sneaky, and I was able to tell from his body language when he was plotting a coup and head him off with literally reining him in. It was a blast. The guide was super friendly and professional and frequently checked to make sure we were having a good time and that everyone felt safe and in control of their horses. Before we set out for the morning, each rider received a brief private lesson and an assessment on how they handled their horse. The novice riders received longer instruction. Overall, this was a fun and scenic way to see the area. We felt quite safe and enjoyed the entire ride.

I had purchased 3 gift certificates from Dwight last June. We weren't able to book last year and after winter I tried several times to get a hold of him to book the half day rides we had purchased. I eventually had to get in touch with them through Facebook messenger. We booked for April 25 at 8:45. We were about to head to the trail and another group drove up and they had also been booked for 9:30. Dwight had overbooked not remembering. They also had a wedding that evening. I understand mistakes are made and everyone is human. However, Dwight proceeded to be extremely rude telling us we had to wait over an hour for them to saddle up four more horses. We were expecting storms that afternoon, that Dwight had called me twice about concerned for the weather that day. We also had paid for 3 people which Dwight had initially said that would guarantee us our own time and private ride. He snapped out me saying no I was mistaken we would have paid $500 for a private ride. I asked him to not speak to me or my father that way and he yelled at me to get off his land and he would refund me. This was so shocking. He knew I had gotten this horseback riding trip for my dad because my mom passed away two years ago in April. I was extremely upset and he wrote me a check for a refund which ended up being $495. I would have paid the extra $5 if that would have actually gotten us a private ride. He was so unbelievably rude we couldn't believe it. I advise to never work with Dwight. The girls that were the trail guides were very nice.

She'd never ridden before and I only have sporadically (summer camp outings a million years ago, vacations etc) so we were kind of nervous. Our ride got off to a rough start, the horses did not want to be ridden that day and were kind of difficult to handle as novices. My friend had Hagrid and I had Gracie and both were kind of dead set on doing their own thing. We understood as they are animals with their own minds and personalities. However we were kind of spooked starting off the ride. Cathy did a great job at keeping us calm and guiding us. I will say the horses my friend and I were riding apparently do not do well in close proximity with each other, and that was a disappointment because the whole reason my friend booked was so that we could do the experience together. We actually had to keep a distance most of the time because Gracie did not like Hagrid at all and she definitely let it be known lol. I really appreciate Cathy and Indian Summer Guide Service being so accommodating with us. We were coming from about 2 hours away and hit some unexpected traffic so we ended up late. Cathy still ensured we had a great ride with great views!

Most of us are beginners but the bride is a more advanced rider and she had an absolute blast. The horses were beautiful, well-behaved and absolutely full of personality (shout out to Electra). The pace was excellent and everyone felt included throughout the entire ride. Both Ashton + Devon were incredibly nice, communicative, and super flexible with us asking for dozens of pictures. If you can request a ride with them, definitely do it!! The merrie mill trail was also beautiful and a nice mix of open fields, forest trails, and spectacular vistas. This was the highlight of our trip!
