    Trail Ride
    Jen L.

Found out about this place via Groupon and booked 2 trips! One down and another to go! Now I'm a pretty experienced horseback rider and I thought this was a fantastic half day ride! It's all walk and no trot or canter which could be kind of boring for those of us that like a real horseback ride. But there is something calming about being on a trail and embracing the QUIET and calmness of the Shenandoah. They are trail horses so it is a nose to tail type of a ride. They are very strict about staying in the original order that you started in. It's a very small group (no more than 10 riders). One trail lead and another Wrangler in the rear. This is a family owned operation so it is a very warm and friendly experience. The horses are very well cared for and almost pampered. They are VERY friendly and gentle and perfect for inexperienced riders. You might get a chance to feed an apple to your horse during lunch. I highly recommend taking back roads out to this place and see the countryside. It is worth the extra time!

The cottages (there are 4 to choose from) are well appointed with everything you need and lack exactly what you don't need in a place like this (phone, tv, or internet). The cottages are in Dyke, VA about 20 minutes from Skyline Drive so it's very easy access for hiking. It's about 45 minutes to Charlottesville where you can shop for groceries, go to dinner, or just hang out if you need to reconnect with the city. The cabins have jacuzzi's, full kitchens, grills, backyards with fire pits, indoor fireplaces and board games. They also have a salt water pool in the main house that you can use (and I recommend after a hike!). Personal touches make this place what it is: they've thought of everything. We also loved the fresh cookies that were dropped off at our house and Chuck and Stew always write us personal notes to welcome us to the house. Looking for privacy? The cabins are secluded and you enter them via a keypad on the door so you don't have to check in or out...just come and go as you wish. I highly recommend this place! And will be back in the fall.

There is a little bit of peace to be had for everyone. It's a pet friendly b&b farm, well behaved dogs are welcomed with open arms. The hosts: Deanie, Ken, Laura and Blair are amazing. They're so warm and welcoming, full of friendly conversation and inquisitive about everyone's interests and back grounds. There is plenty of morning coffee talk and stories a plenty. It feels like extended family. This is our second stay ( we knew we had to return again after our first visit) and it was just as amazing as the first visit. I recommend this place if you're looking to disconnect from mainstream life, and media and enjoy a quiet respite. My daughter and I enjoyed walks to pet horses, dogs, and cats around the property. We cannot wait to come back again.

The rooms are modern and the beds are really comfortable, and Deanie and Laura's breakfast is indulgently great. Now to the farm's semi-secret identity: it also happens to be a playground for adventure motorcycling! Don't worry, it's still QUIET near the lodge and the pool area (not a lot of loud Harleys here!) but if you're interested or just getting into the sport, this is the place to be. Blair is an outstanding coach and will teach you whatever you need to know about riding off roads (and will help you properly configure your bike to boot!) and there are miles of perfect trails through the woods to explore right on the property. If you're considering your first BDR, I'd HIGHLY recommend a few days with Blair and Laura at Penmerryl first--they'll get you ready to go. (They'll also point you to the local riding trails). I'm a little worried about this place taking off, but I couldn't help but share. If you come, you'll be hooked.

My husband…read moreand I both love the outdoors and love to hike, and we were looking for a location that would cater to both of these where we did not need to travel far. When we found the web page for Whispering Oaks, we knew that we had found our place. This home was exactly what we had been looking for! It looked warm and inviting, comfy, spacious, and it was close to many of the things that we wanted to do. We booked right away. The home did not disappoint. We arrived in the evening after dark, but the instructions were so specific for check in that we did not have any delay in finding the home or getting in. Everything was set up perfectly and was spotless. We booked at the beginning of December, and our hosts even set up Christmas cds for us and put movies out as well. We were able to come in and get settled quickly, and before we knew it, it felt like home. We put on a fire (there were firelogs as well as a huge supply of firewood waiting), turned on the television, and enjoyed lounging in the living room. The living room is huge-- the pictures truly do not do it justice. The ceilings are incredibly high and impressive, and it truly does make you feel like you are living outdoors (without the cold that is). The remainder of our stay was wonderful as well. We had all of the kitchen supplies that we needed to cook as well as other basic supplies that we needed to function as if it were our own home. Hiking, our main goal for the weekend, was also incredibly convenient. Our first day in town we ventured to the Nature Center to get oriented for a hike (this was not necessary, however, as our hosts left maps of all of the trails for us in the kitchen, but it is always nice to get a person speaking from experience about the trails nearby). We decided on the Upper Shamokin Falls trail, which did not disappoint- it was both challenging and beautiful. The second day it was a bit drizzly, so we decided to travel the walk around the golf course to the nature trail around the corner. We had an easier trail for this, but it was gorgeous and we still got a few miles in with the walk around the course. There are tons of trails to choose from within a short drive or walk, so no worries on variety. Overall, this has to be one of our favorite places that we have visited in the past few years. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area, Whispering Oaks is a wonderful choice.

I wish I could give the houses more stars than last time, but sadly, not much has changed. The houses look a little more tired than before, and the state park still hasn't done anything to make them any more comfortable or inviting. If I was in charge of the houses, I would hang old-timey pictures of men logging, of trains, scenery from other state parks, and black and white photos of the town of Cass from 100 years ago. Give your customers a sense of time and place. Also, these houses still need a lot of love and maintenance. They need new paint, roofs, and other miscellaneous items repaired or replaced. Overall, this is still a very cool place, and I will probably be back. But it's as if I can feel the town slowly dying....without more money and maintenance from the state.

The view from my room overlooked the lawn where all sorts of activities take place, from folks walking dogs to groups posing for wedding party photos. The ground level entrance to the building features a lovely reading room stocked with plenty of newspapers, books and magazines. The room next door offers complimentary beverages and snacks and stocks a good library of brochures highlighting local sights. My room, located on the second floor, was accessible by an elevator and stairs. That level also has a large banquet room, a parlor with a beautiful piano and access to balconies overlooking the lawn. There is also a pantry stocked with breakfast items in the morning including yogurt, fruit bars and cereal. And plenty of coffee (plus coffee makers are in the rooms). Guest can opt for daily maintenance of their rooms to have beds made, towels replaced and the basket of personal care amenities replenished. The desk and free wi-fi made it easy to handle emails and other tasks in the privacy of my room. And the large closet and full-sized dresser amply accommodated my wardrobe. A real highlight for me was the chance to spend mornings jogging around this beautiful campus or strolling over to the collection of boutiques, coffee shops and dining spots that border one end of the university. There were also nearby bikes that could be rented for a cycling excursion as well. A nighttime stroll included a stop at a nearby room in a separate building where Edgar Allan Poe once lived and worked when he attended classes here. The location provided a perfect hub for exploring the area's weekend farmers' market, nearby wineries and scenic hiking spots and historic landmarks. The Colonnade Club is definitely worthy of being on the college honor roll!
