I truly appreciate the wonderful Maureen, to whom I spoke on the phone when I was desperately trying to find anyone to relieve my agony; while I was originally scheduled for 2 weeks out (yes, that's how busy it gets in Southern Maine) she kept checking for cancellations and managed to get me in much earlier. I had my first consult at the South Portland office, where the staff were all very helpful and Dr. Mitchell verified what we needed to do--and fortunately, they were able to get me in the next day (in the Windham office) for the removal! WHEW. Once there, the procedure itself was a breeze. The whole team was great: super professional, everything explained very clearly (including what the costs would be up-front), and both offices are cheerful and clean and seem to have all the up-to-date equipment. Between these two offices and the other in Biddeford, they seem to have a good system down for getting patients in when they need it. And they had a list of local recommended dentists for regular practice too, which is great for setting up longer-term care. I'll definitely come back to SMOM for any other oral surgery I find myself needing.

What is going on there??! It's like walking into the twilight zone. The xray tech didn't adjust the machine properly so it was hitting my shoulders when trying to take the xray. When finished, she told me to step back and the way the machine was lowered down, it caught my two front teeth, like it was going to rip them out. She said "go across the hall to the room". I'm standing there with the xray protection stuff on and was like.. "do you want this stuff back?" And laughed because at this point it felt like a joke. The xray tech was completely without expression the entire time like a failing robot. Then came the dental assistant who repeatedly came back into the room with questions she forgot to ask. She was so condescending and rude. I literally almost walked out during the intake. Completely expressionless and condescending, like I was not worth her time. It's a shame because the doctor, Dr Bradley, was awesome. But after that whole experience, I would never in a million years go back and will tell every one of my twilight-zone experience! Also, I can't wait to get a reply to this like the other one-star reviews, exhibiting a positive, "oh well" attitude, brushing me off and sweeping me under the carpet with all the others. This office LITERALLY couldn't care less. Dr Bradley deserves better representation then that. She should DEFINITELY go elsewhere to provide care!!!

The front desk staff is courteous and offers you to the waiting area's coffee, bottled water and/or a variety of seltzer waters. My first 6 month check-up was just done there since relocating to Portland. The intake examination by the Dental Hygienist was the most thorough I have ever experienced. In depth photographs were taken of my teeth and mouth in addition to the typical x-rays. This is definitely a newer, very updated, current, and more modern establishment. To say the least, I'm very happy to have chosen this practice. I've always been somewhat 'dentist phobic' and was pleased to actually feel relaxed the entire time. I have a follow up appointment to have a crown done and I have no worries or nervousness about having it done. Both the Dental Hygienist and Dentist were very professional: communicated well, explaining my dental health in detail, treatment plan, and provided good recommendations. As a side note: the examination room was amazing! I mentioned that I felt cold and I was immediately brought a blanket. There's TV mounted on the ceiling so you can watch something during your procedure. There's a very large TV monitor on the wall that will show your x-rays, etc. as they go through each point of examination follow-up. I never thought I'd enjoy a dentist visit but this practice has changed the way I feel about having my teeth taken care of. I highly recommend them.

When I told a colleague my horror story, she recommended Progressive and even gave me a recommendation card with a discount off of my first visit. When I called to schedule my appointment, I was told that all initial visits take about two hours. Yikes- that's a long time to keep a mouth open! At 8:00 on the appointed morning I opened the door with trepidation. My reaction was immediate- relief! The waiting room was cheerful and bright and the receptionist friendly and welcoming. The other patients even looked happy to be there. I sat down long enough to text my husband about my good feelings when I was called back by a smiley hygienist who gave me a tour of the office. A tour! Never once have I ever been given a tour of a dentist's office. It's clean, modern, and every employee I passed smiled and waved. The two hours flew right by! Regrettably I can't remember my hygienist's name- but she was really sweet and funny. She and the dentist, Dr. Fox, asked me lots of questions, walked me through my x-rays, explained every step of the cleaning process, and made sure I was comfortable throughout my entire visit. Not only did they tell me the work I would need done to improve my smile, but they also recognized and praised my daily personal mouth care habits. Then they sent me on my way with a goodie bag of floss, tooth paste, a tooth brush, a water bottle, and an appointment in November. Progressive was such a breath of fresh air compared to my previous dental providers. They didn't try to bamboozle me. They weren't patronizing. They were kind and didn't act as though my presence was an inconvenience. They genuinely seem to enjoy and take pride in the work they do. I'm recommending them to all my friends. TL;DR, if you have anxiety about dentists, if you don't have anxiety about dentists and need to…read morefind one in the greater Portland ME area? Call Dr Jean-Paul Boudreau's office. Ah, the 1970s. A time when men were men, women were women, and velour bell bottomed suits were a thing people actually left the house wearing without even a hint of irony. Unfortunately for young me, the 70s were also a time when it was considered perfectly appropriate for dentists to be absolutely terrifying to kids, and border on abuse. The first dentist I had as a child in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood was right along Center Street, and nearly everyone I knew would see him, and every single kid who did see him would burst into tears at the thought of having to go, or even the mention of his name. Not exaggerating here, this dentist would do nothing to alleviate children's anxiety, and in fact would seem to go out of his way to make things WORSE. Frankly I could go on for hours about how horrible the dentist visit were when I was a kid. From the bitewings he used being made for adult mouths to x-ray, which would lacerate a child's gums, to how he would have one of his dental assistants (literally) kneel on your chest and restrain your head if you cried and got upset. Oh, and when you were done? Know what he'd do? Give you a lollypop. No joke. You just came in because you had a cavity that needed filling, your mouth is numb, your face is covered with tears and you're traumatized? Here. Have some fucking sugar. Needless to say that as an adult, I would rarely go to the dentist. I had issues galore, evident gum problems, but even with good dental insurance I'd only go if there was a major problem (read: Pain). So, when I started having severe pain in my teeth and jaw, I had serious anxiety and put if off for days and days. Thankfully one of my friends suggested I visit Dr Boudreau. When I got there and we talked, I admitted that it had been years since my last dental visit, and told him about the dentist I'd had as a kid. And know what Dr Boudreau did? He listened. And he acknowledged how horrible that was and how it could be in the past. Talk about a different experience. From there he assessed my teeth, figured out what the issue was (actually a sinus infection that was putting pressure on nerves up around my teeth... who knew that was a thing? Apparently him), and then came up with a plan to deal with the not-inconsiderable amount of plaque under my gums. That was about 3 years ago, give or take. After numerous visits, and the use of several heavy duty belt sanders to chisel away at the decades of buildup, my gums are today quite happy. Could I do better at flossing? Yes. Yes I could. Old dogs, new tricks, etc etc, and this dog ain't quick to change habits! BUT I no longer have borderline panic attacks at the thought of getting in the chair. Dr Boudreau's offices are clean, well lit, and man does he have some high tech toys!! I mean granted, when I was a kid the average dentist's office looked like something out of an H. R. Giger illustration. They'd take an x-ray, and this fucking massive swing arm device would be laboriously turned your way, they'd have you bite the thing and destroy your gums, put on the lead apron, then the staff would yell "FIRE IN THE HOLE" and dive into a lead lined bunker. Frankly I'm amazed I don't have an arm growing out of my neck. ANYway, Dr Boudreau's office has these wicked cool portable x-ray things that look like a nifty prop out of Battlestar Galactica. In fact everything is far more cool and high tech than anything I'd seen previously. And when he does a filling? Scoops in some sort of stinky goo, shapes it, then takes a little Sonic Screwdriver looking thing and goes "BOOP... BOOP", and that's it. Filling is done. Well, I mean after the novocaine and the drilling, of course. Fucking technology, man. I love it. Everyone I've met who works with Dr Boudreau are also great. Professional, friendly, really easy to talk to, and I have to admit, going to the dentist's office is now an almost pleasurable experience. I mean, as long as you don't mind someone taking a metal hook and going "scrape scrape scrape" to your face. But "pleasurable" as opposed to "horrifying and traumatic". So yeah. I'll take it. But they're all great. If you need a dentist? Go see him. If you're also Gen-X and used to the horrors of dentists in the 70s and 80s in particular.

I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I have, and I feel responsible for speaking out. As I write this, I am still in a great deal of pain almost two years later. From the beginning, my experience at this office was frustrating. I came in with significant pain, hoping for real solutions, but instead, I was given round after round of antibiotics with no long-term plan. I made it clear which side of my mouth was hurting the most, yet somehow, work was done on the opposite side--something even the dental assistant questioned out loud in the room. After that, not only did my original pain persist, but new issues arose where they had done the unnecessary work. I ended up worse off after multiple visits, and some of the teeth they worked on only deteriorated further. The only bright spot in this office was the dental assistants. They were the only ones who seemed to listen and show any real concern. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the actual dentist, who ignored my concerns multiple times, or for the front desk staff. If the conversation wasn't about payments, they didn't seem to care. The front desk woman, Elyse (or Alyssa), was incredibly rude and dismissive no matter how much pain I was in. I was met with indifference at best, and outright rudeness at worst, every time I called in for help. This whole ordeal has taken a serious toll on me, both physically and financially. I trusted this office to help me, but instead, I've been left in pain, out a significant amount of money, and still searching for real treatment. I don't take leaving a review like this lightly, but I feel like people deserve to know what kind of experience they may have here.
