I hate dentists. No, seriously, I do. Ever since I was a kid and I had the most horrible,…read moreverbally abusive country dentist, I've been terrified to go back. Even the thought of a cleaning had me running for my emergency anxiety medications and it was so bad that I abstained from even just cleanings for almost six years. (gross, I know). But only one with an anxiety disorder can truly relate. Fortunately for me and my under cared for teeth, one of my friends became a dental assistant. With gentle coaxing, she helped get me back on the cleaning wagon. X-rays, however, I pushed her off for years, mostly out of fear of what they may find. Eventually I caved and we did indeed find what I most dreaded. A cavity. But not just any cavity. My FIRST and only cavity I've ever had at 35 years old. A cavity that sat there mocking me and my cowardly ways. That whispered in my ear at night all the horrible and most traumatic ways that getting it filled could entail : Intolerable, tear inducing pain. Blood and bone fragments flying. A sadistic and cruel man smiling down on my in my pain. Two foot long needles coming at my sweet and tender gums. Drills the size of chain saws. But here's the thing about anxiety for those who do not have it: Anxiety lies. But it lies only in the moment - never making its absurdity known until the situation draws to a close. So today, with no other choice (minus removing the tooth at home with pliers - which was just NOT going to happen), I went in for the first filling of my life. Doped up heavily on prescribed anxiety medication (which was disclosed to my dentist), we began. I have to say first and foremost, that Dr. Nano was very kind, unassuming, and spoke with a very gentle nature. I warned him of my problem, and not once did he flinch. He made no off handed remarks of "sucking it up." He spoke softly and calmly about what he was about to do, and several times checked in on me to ensure I was coping well enough. He offered me a break should I need one. One of the things that is the worst about having any kind of medical anxiety is that I am currently on a 1:1 ratio with people that are good to me versus people who think that being verbally tough (or as I like to call it, abusive) is the best way to go. I've been told in the past to "suck it up", "you're just embarrassing yourself" and "this is pathetic". Yes, thank you. As if I'm not already horrified enough by my childish and cowardly and COMPLETELY INCONSOLABLE actions. But not here. Not for a minute. With the assistant Janelle holding my hand and reassuring me, and with Dr Nano's calm and kind demeanor, I can proudly say that I made it front to back without crying (my only major goal). And I can honestly say, that maybe next time, I wont have to medicate myself quite so much. And that maybe, just maybe, they helped unwind a small piece of early childhood trauma. So THANK YOU Dr. Nano and assistant Janelle. Had you been around in my childhood, I undoubtedly would be a dental patient pro by now, nonplussed by the sound of drills and the prick of the needles. You should be an example to dental clinics everywhere. I thank you, deeply. And more importantly, I trust you. I recommend to any dental phobic person (and I know there are a lot of us out there), to please give Dr Nano, and his assistant Janelle, a chance to show you the kinder side of dentistry.

They are absolutely amazing, upfront, willing work with me. I've had multiple fillings, a crown (still need more) and they have been friendly, courteous, and professional. Dr. Buss and Megan are absolutely amazing, Judy and Shanna are informative and break everything down and explain billing and insurance clearly. I used to get very anxious over going to the Dentist, but not with the amazing staff at Portland Smiles. They hygienists are amazing and the cleaning great, I just can't remember their names sadly. If I could rate Portland Smiles 10 stars I would, and I recommend them highly as they don't judge, they do listen, and they do care.

Finding a new dentist is always stressful. But I got lucky, because after my first visit to Portland Smiles I knew I had found my new dentist's office. From the moment I called to make my first appointment, Judy was very accommodating and welcoming. She gave me an appointment a month out, but then texted me when they had a cancellation in case I wanted to go earlier. I loved that! I also loved how organized this office is. I was able to submit all the new-patient forms online prior to my appointment, and that saved me so much time. I can't say enough awesome things about Alicia, the best hygienist I've met. She was so caring, welcoming, and thoughtful. We had the best conversations together, it truly felt like I was making a new friend. She's hilarious and amazing at her job. She made my teeth cleaning fun. Dr. Buss was also friendly and welcoming, and you can tell she's such an expert at what she does. I felt like I was in good hands every minute of my appointment. I am so glad I found Portland Smiles.

It's also music to my ears when I hear "no cavities!" That being said, Gannett Drive Dental is the best dental facility that I have been to. The staff are INCREDIBLY nice and accommodating, and you can tell that they really have a passion for what they do. Whenever I go, I always get Michelle as a dental hygienist and she is fantastic at what she does. She always makes sure to tell you what she is seeing and why she is doing what she is doing, but she doesn't expect you to talk back, which is nice. There is nothing worse than having a hygienist who wants to have a conversation with you while their hands are all up inside your mouth. Michelle will take pauses and ask questions to get to know you, which is a nice added touch. Dr. Kivus is incredibly personable and makes an effort to get to know every one of his patients. It's these little personal touches that make Gannett Drive Dental what it is. I will definitely be a faithful patient to Gannett Drive Dental.

Unfortunately my long time dentist retired and I needed a new dentist. When I called Gannett Drive Dental, the first person I spoke with was Kathy, the office manager. She was so friendly and helpful! She set me and my husband up with appointments, took some basic information down and mailed out our new patient forms promptly. I had my first routine cleaning today and I had a very positive experience overall. I was greeted upon entry, the waiting area was clean and comfortable and my wait wasn't long. The dental hygienist, Gina, was friendly, kind and did a great job cleaning my teeth. I didn't experience any discomfort. She listened to my concerns and addressed them patiently, professionally and knowledgeably. Dr. Fillebrown was also very kind, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. I was pretty anxious initially but after awhile I found myself much more at ease. I'm very happy with my experience and would highly recommend Gannett Drive Dental.
