As a resident of good old Stalybridge, I thought it was about time that our local train station got a revamp. It didn't take too long and was always open and when it was finished the place had been modernised to a excellent standard. The facilities it now offers are top quality and with the times!
There is more than one ticket office these days as the entrance to the station has gone all digital with computers, microphones and electronic timetables. You do not have to wait half an hour to buy a ticket for the train you missed twenty minutes ago. The station is more quick and efficient. In terms of parking, there is a bigger area for relatives to pick up as well as disabled parking.
Inside the station, there is indoor seating with radiators which is fantastic on the cold winter days when you can't feel your toes. There is a cafe which serves everything you need for a more enjoyable trip whether it be to work or on holiday. Not only does this station have a cafe, it has a famous buffet bar where James May from Top Gear visited for his TV programme. Let me add that James May did not make this buffet bar famous, he came because it was already famous. It is known for its ale and hospitality. It is steeped with history as the buffet bar has been then as long as the station. It has won many awards and prizes. If you want to relive history and step back in time, this is a nice place to go and have a cup of tea and a pint and hear some wonderful stories about this station.
If we look at travel times now, the Huddersfield Line runs through Stalybridge and is about 20 minutes from Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly.
The station has wowed everyone with its refurbishment and looks the part these days. It was about time too! read more
