Sheffield Station is the busiest station in South Yorkshire, serving the city centre of Sheffield, it is also part of the Supertram network, where you can continue your journey around Sheffield/Rotherham, and the station is located adjacent to Sheffield Hallam University. The station is managed by East Midlands Railway, who provide most of the major services going in and out of the station, including services to Manchester and London. The station is also served by Transpennine Express on the Manchester Airport - Cleethorpes line (via Doncaster), and also has CrossCountry services (Edinburgh, Reading, Newcastle, York) and many Northern services (local services around Yorkshire and Greater Manchester) Due to the construction of the station, meaning you have to pass through the station to use the footbridge for access to bus and Supertram services, there are no ticket gates here. The main concourse of the station is pretty noticeable and modern, including a couple of shops / small-take away kiosks, there isn't particularly places to sit down and get something to eat/drink in the station which is annoying, but there is a Superdrug and Marks and Spencer Simply Food. There are places nearby in the city centre for food, however. I hate the lift at this station which takes you up to the footbridge, it must be the world's slowest lift, the doors take forever to close up to the point they're forced to have a sign in the lift, it says they're "working on it", but it's been like that for over two years... I guess it will stay like that. I think the station is A-OK, but still miles apart from other stations in Yorkshire including York and Leeds. 3* read more

Clean and modernized rail station in the Midlands, Sheffield offers transport to London, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool plus CrossCountry services to Scotland. There is also a tram stop nearby for Sheffield services. It's really quite a nice station with easy access to the tracks on stairs and step-free. There are labels on the steps so that traffic is kept to the left side. Many ticket windows for purchasing tickets if, like me, the automated ticket machine doesn't like your "swipe" credit card. Departure board is easy to read and the signage clearly points out which way to which platforms. There is a beautiful sculpture / fountain out front. read more

You know what makes a good train station? A Starbucks on the platform open for the 6 am train. You know what doesn't, I'm pretty sure the coffee they gave me was from last night. The station is kinda odd otherwise. A few shops here and there. Pay some coins to go to the bathroom. A very beautiful building and a great entrance to Sheffield. It has the usual coffee shops, M&S food, WH Smiths etc, as well as coffee shops on the platform. You have to pay 20p to use the toilet. I already had my tickets so didn't need to buy. The display signs were up to date and I found it easy to find my platform. I like the way they have labelled which stairs to use to avoid a crush. The station was very clean and the outside area is lovely. read more

Small and easy to negociate, considering the size of the destination. Very handily located within the city too Whilst the station building itself may not be the most attractive the water features that meet your eyes as you exit the station are quite stunning. And they have a cracking station pub too, in the Sheffield Tap. read more

Pretty station. Well marked platforms that were easy to navigate. We were picked up by a friend and whisked away (about 20 minutes or so) into the country side for a delicious authentic pub experience. We were there a few weeks before Christmas and there were carolers in the station and decorations all around. Very festive. Only negative - you have to pay to use the toilet! read more

When I first came to Sheffield and walked out of the train station, the view was so depressing that I wondered whether I'd made the right move. However, the modernisation has made vast improvements, and it's now a pleasant place to be, and the new water feature and pedestrianised area is a much better vista to exit to. The large screen displaying train times and stops is also much more preferable than the previous poky little screens. There are a few shops and cafes in the station, including a handy M&S which is open till 10pm at night and so is useful for picking up a pint of milk and a snack on your way home. Get yourself a free BITE card (http://www.bitecard.co.uk ) if you intend to spend any time in the station cafes, as it gives you 20% off. Bear in mind that if you stand still for any moment in the station, you will be approached by someone asking for money. If someone says they have lost their train fare and need to get back to their sick child, chances are, they haven't. :o) The station is less of a pleasure for anyone collecting passengers from it, as parking is a nightmare, plus the vehicle access into the station is not so well designed and usually results in queues of beeping taxis and cars. read more

An excellent station since its rennovation a couple of years ago. The station is surely home to the best welcome than any other city in the country, with the stunning Sheaf Square. Tram's can be caught to all areas of the city from behind the station, and there is a very busy taxi rank just outside. To add to this the bus station is just over the road too! One bad point however, is the distance you have to walk to the shops in the city centre, as the station isn't too central compared to others (i.e Birmingham New Street etc.) read more

A good city train station that has benefitted from significant investment over the years. There are about a dozen platforms connected by a bridge; at one end of the bridge is the main station entrance (shops, ticket hall etc), and at the other is a tram station for local tram services. Three cheers for an integrated transport system! The signage around the station is on the good side of average and the station staff are helpful and friendly. All in all the station has a bright feel to it and is a good example of its type. read more

Since it's been renovated the station is now well trendy with the fountains outside the station. I like the destination boards inside the station, which a large and clearly visible, there is an off licence and other shops selling food & drink and there is a tramlink connected to the station which connects you to the city centre, the suburbs and Sheffield Wednesday FC. The only sour point about the station was that I was attacked by a rival football fan there at plaform 4a on 11th September 2004, I sustained bad back injuries as a result. read more

The Sheffield Station has a great location. It is across the street from the main bus station, on the tram line and a short walk to most everything in city centre. The board is easy to read, the shops are nice and the entire place is usually very tidy. Once you are outside, you can see the lovely fountains that make the station so lovely. One of the best things about this station is The Sheffield Tap. They have a great selection of beer and a knowledgeable staff. There is a reason they are almost always busy! So if you have time to kill before your train departs, pop in for a drink. read more

Since the recent redevelopment of the area this has really improved. The water feature outside makes such a good impression for the city when you walk out of the station. There's a good selection of shops/cafes for food and drink too. The staff seem friendly though i don't usually have much contact with them as i buy my tickets on line. Sheffield Station was modernised not too long back and is much improved on what it once was. being spaciouse it never feels too busy and walking out the front doors you are greated by the newest addition to the station, its multi tierd water feature and steel waterfall wall. the water feature also lights up at night imitating a fire effect at one point and producing steam. The station is just a 5 minute walk away from the town centre and the nearest hotels. just a little more then that. or you can catch a taxi from its dedicated taxi rank which has a heated waiting area on the unlikely event that no taxis are available) The platforms while old fashioned are clean and looked after, 8 platforms in all with a few stores in the main section of the stations (whs smiths, whistle stop, burgerking M&S and a coffee bar). While not as large as some of the other stations round the country the space is utalised just right. read more

Sheffield train station is a pictures in itself. with its lovely water fountains and architecture of the station building it is a beautiful place to have the privileged to see daily. the train services from sheffield are fairly good and on time. and it is a rather clean area. Very architecturally pleasing, but a bit lacking in facilities for such a decently sized town. The aesthetics of the fountains outside are very beautiful and pleasing to the eye, but the station itself could use with a few more shops - mostly food options! For breakfast, we really only had the option of sandwiches or coffee shop fare. It really needs a McD's or Pret or something with hot food. Spacious platforms, good signage. read more

The place is looking fantastic compared to about 2 years ago! The redesign of the place is lovely! You have a WH Smith, M & S, theres a cafe and also Burger King! If you want a drink or a few nibbles! The staff are really helpful.. eg. if your a first time traveller on a train and you dont know the procedures they will tell you what you have to do and where to go! And if you have time.. it is close to the Town Centre. There are quite a few shops there! read more

as soon as u walk out of the doors of sheffield train station u feel welcome. what a nice veiw it is now. its very welcoming. big and spacious. lots of room. not as big as manchester picadilly but has 8 platforms. few shops. wh smith, m&s, boots, burger kings, etc read more

Well-served by the local tram network, the nearby bus station and the endless taxis, Sheffield Station is looking good these days! Beware - parking is still a nightmare if you're wanting to leave your own car, or pick up someone else. The new concourse at the front is lovely though. read more

A good interchange with plenty of readable signs, unfortunately the signs are mostly written in English. Platform access is easy to reach by stairway for those who feel energetic or by lift for the not so energetic and then by walkway bridge to platforms on either side of railway tracks. The platforms are clean and have cafes and public toilets, waiting rooms and baby-changing facilities. To the rear of the Station there is access to the very popular Supertram. The only letdown to Sheffield Station is the outside forecourt at ther front of the Station, it's simply a waste of a lot of space taken up by water features, fountains, mini waterfalls. I think this area would better have served as the city's bus station, instead you have a seven minute walk to endure to reach the bus station and you are forced to cross two very busy highways. read more

A really nice welcome to sheffiel when you come out of the train station. Sheffield train station has been recently modernised and they,ve done a splended job, especially outside where theres a fantastic long waterfall feature, and outdoor seating area. Aswell as a large ticket office theres a few shops and a newsagents to purchase any snacks or drinks for your journey. One thing i miss is the old pub that they used to have but apart from this its fine. read more

Station has finally finished the refurbishment which seems to have taken forever! Facilities are a lot better and now has the same shops as other main city centre stations. More appealing to look at as well, but picking up anyone in a car is always a nightmare as it gets so busy. read more

Planes, trains, and automobiles... when you spend a lot of time at train stations and airports, you begin to start comparing and choosing favourites, maybe even making a top 5 list... oh... that is just me... should've never watched "High Fidelity". Anyway, this was part of the adventure to the UK Border Agency to reapply for my visa. So this was actually my first time to Sheffield, well, besides my trips to Meadow Hall. I must admit, when I arrived, I didn't take notice of the station as I was worried about getting to my appointment and possibly being deported. However, on my way back to the station, which was very easy to walk back to from the UK Border Agency building (you know... if you have to go...), I was greeted with the very modern fountain outside of this modern railway station. I particularly like that the station is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded and it is easy to navigate. Places to grab a snack, drink, something to read, etc. And the station is so clean. I know train stations aren't really known for cleanliness, but this place is one of the cleanest stations I have been to. read more

For a city Sheffield's size the train station is fairly small despite recent renovations to the station. The station is looking great at the moment with update ticket offices, toilets, platforms, shops and cafes and feels modern despite been housed in a Victorian building. The facilities are brand new and the staff at the station are helpful but the toilets are usually untidy. Due to the stations size it can get very busy a peak times (between 7 and 9 in a morning and 4 and 7 in the evenings) and is fairly busy at weekends too. The platforms are fairly exposed to the elements and very cold in the winter with some sections of the platform completely exposed. The biggest problem is dropping off and picking up people from the station which should be avoided at all costs. There is only a small area for cars near to the station part of which is shared with taxis so it can take ages if the traffic is particularly bad. An effort to reduce the traffic has been made with the near by car park offering 30 mins free parking to reduce congestion. Sheffield bus station is across the road from the train station which is very convienant. Sheffield stations has a lack of facilities and the traffic situation is a problem but it is a modern adequate station. read more

Miles better than it used to be! Stepping off the train here makes me know I'm home. Now segregated from the main road by a massive fountain that is an attraction in itself. Great views of the good and bad of Sheffield - the modern centre and the Park Hill flats. read more

Very unhelpful. Trying to put a 12 year old on the train to London. The train was cancelled and he needed to change in Darby. Asked which train he needed to catch first but the lady said look on the information board. How is a 12 year old going to find the platform and time of the train he is changing in Darby I have no idea. read more

A very good place to go as it has been recently modernised, the staff are very friendly and helpful, they will tell you which is the quickest train to get on for your journey without even needing to ask! There are a few shops, though not many compared to somewhere like Manchester station. The platforms are easy to get around and it is located extremely close to the tram stop. read more

A very nice station, looks amazing at night too with the blue lights, however, extrememly disappointed with the road leading up to the station. theres only one exit route, so theres a big line of traffic a lot of the time when your getting dropped off or picked up. This is a real problem if you have luggage or are disabled as you cant just jump out of the car and run towards the platform for your train as many people do. I have a disability and have missed my train a few times, as it takes a long time for the car to get to the front entrance, and thats even when iv got there 30mins before my train time. Its ridiculous, it worked perfectly fine when the taxi rank was on the otherside and they had two exit points, they've just caused traffic and chaos which there was no need for.who planned it and didnt account for this problem!?? read more

Terrible station. It seems the planners here don't know the alphabet and newcomers will often get confused finding platform 2C which is NOT after platform 2B but before 2A - and somewhere near 5B. Very strange. Also staff are usually hiding somewhere and not helpful at all when you're lucky enough to catch one. read more
