After all the pain and suffering First have given me over the years, from delayed, dirty buses to…read morepoor customer service and drivers being rude, watching other bus operators in Greater Manchester invest while First just stagnate, I'm surprised to be giving them anything other than a two-star rating, but ever since First sold two of their three depots in Greater Manchester, I think that has improved the transport in the region as a result, especially on the routes First do operate. First Vantage is a brand within First Greater Manchester, they operate routes on the guided busway from Leigh/Atherton into the city centre, and then onto the MRI, connecting Leigh with the city centre in 44 minutes, saving a good 50% of the journey length really is great for Leigh, without it, it would have been pretty deserted and it does make good use of the old railway tracks. On other routes which aren't the premium/flagship service, I still notice buses being delayed to the point they're often unreliable, especially on the 59, I still noticed buses being typically dirty (This is common on Go North West who bought First's Greater Manchester depot and still use their buses - maybe it's just a problem with the floor/seating they installed getting dirty easily?). Again, there doesn't seem to be much investment on new buses throughout their routes, again it's a shame to see Stagecoach and Diamond North West, the latter took over First's Bolton depot and brought in 163 brand new buses, while First use the same old buses they've had for years. First, do have an app which allows you to track your buses in real-time which is pretty good, this is nothing new however and is basically the same as most other bus operators in the region including Diamond North West and Go North West. 3*- Great for Vantage, the app is handy, but First wouldn't be my first choice of operator, even if they aren't in such a diabolical state as they were which haunted my daily travels in the past. Upgraded rating mainly down to the reliability/comfort of Vantage services V1 and V2. (Review #100 of 2021!)

First buses are the main reason I hate coming to work…read more There are several reasons for this. The first thing has to be the price, it's ridiculous! The cheapest journey costs £1.70. £1.70!! Even if you're only going three stops! A weekly pass costs over £15! The second reason has to be how ridiculously unreliable they are. Today I waited 35 minutes for one! The drivers are rude, they seem to be the most miserable people on earth. I will honestly try and get to a destination any other way before getting on a First bus. Avoid if you can!!

Pretty much your average bus station - Operated by TFGM and mainly served by First Greater Manchester, you will occasionally see other companies including Stotts and Stagecoach pop in. They do have screens showing departure boards, nothing above every stand, so pretty generic, but better than nothing. It can be poorly lit at times, they seem to only use the lights inside the bus station when they really need them. Sadly, the Bus Station does not have an interchange with the Metrolink, which is around a 5-10 minute walk away. Lack of staff around the bus station, but the staff on the bus are able to offer assistance, and there is a newsagent. While the bus station is easy to navigate, the fact it is split into a large building and a small building can be a little confusing. 3* - Certainly not too bad for a small town, much better than nearby towns including Middleton but still falling short behind others, including Rochdale and Ashton-Under-Lyne.

In the opposite direction, services go into Stalybridge, again with one train per hour. The station is fairly clean, services are limited as expected for a Category E station. There are toilets, however, they do require a key, it can be a little annoying having to find a staff member though, as far as I'm aware the station is only staffed at certain times, so I'm not sure what happens with the toilets when the staff go home. There is a small waiting shelter providing seating and shelter. There are ramps and lifts to get to the platforms. The town's bus and Metrolink station are both a short walk away, allowing you to continue your journey. 3* - Although fairly quiet ever since the Metrolink came to town, despite not being too impressive, it provides adequate transport facilities and is nice to have in Ashton-Under-Lyne.

I phoned the taxi through to the office, and now it appears someone called Ziggy, a receptionist passed our job over to his brother without booking it in. He telephoned his brother and have since found out it is called flagging! So hence neither driver or customer are insured. BE WARNED do NOT use this firm, how many other jobs are done like that. I have contacted the company to get the insurance details on so many occasions only to be told of the situation, the management refused to speak to me. If it is NOT booked in then you are NOT insured. Police contacted and their Licensing Department.

They take your details and THEY call it a BOOKING? No money is asked for at this time so to me I do not consider it a booking. I am simply told "don't worry just simply ring the driver/office when you get off the plane". So you don't worry about it. (after all you haven't paid! THEN you find someone cheaper. I found Airporttaxis.co.uk are 25% CHEAPER for a 40 mile journey so I paid & booked with THEM (on line) and ignored "Cartax Radio Cars". As soon as I touched down and before I got through customs (and the plane was 20 minutes early!) I received about 4 phone calls from a Pakistani who spoke some undecipherable English but enough to make me understand he was my driver. With all the noise and bustle and 4 calls from him I am assured that this is the person I booked with Airport Taxis when in fact it is NOT. So I meet the driver outside terminal 1 (who knows my name and that I am going to Rotherham) He "conveniently" avoids the answer to my question "Are you Airport taxis" replies Yes I am your taxi. He knows my name and destination so I jump in. Not until I get to my destination and give him £80 inc £4 tip does he say "Its £100". I then discover my mistake. We settle for £90 because he has done the journey and CARTAX RADIO CARS INSIST I BOOKED so this £76 journey which I SHOULD have had with AIRPORT TAXIS has cost me £166.!!!! MY ADVICE - STEER CLEAR OF CARTAX RADIO CARS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !

The Bus Station area is one of the largest I've seen in such a small town, they seem to have buses going everywhere. Destinations include Manchester, Stockport, Stalybridge, Middleton, Oldham, Rochdale and many others. It also includes the Metrolink platform which is on the Eccles via Media City UK line where you can get to Manchester a little bit faster, with services also going to Ashton West, Ashton Moss, Piccadilly Station and others. The toilets are pretty clean, as is the rest of the bus station. The one flaw is the frequency of the services, trams are every 12 minutes as standard however buses can be ever 15-60 minutes depending on the service, this is something I've found to be the case around Ashton, while they have many buses serving the station to have to wait such a long time between services can be really frustrating and there was no staff at the station to ask on the best bus to use. Most of the services from here are Stagecoach, but a good number of services also operate from First and Stotts. 3* - Modern Interchange for a small town with a good number of services, no station shop/coffee machine, poorly staffed and I also hate how it's constructed when a bus is terminating into the station, it really would make sense to use a few of the first platforms you see when entering the station, for services terminating, it's pretty annoying if you're getting off the bus and you have to go through the station, most other bus stations find a way around this so why can't Ashton?
