There is a real bee farm within 40 minute drive from Markham!
Staite's is a bee farm located just north of Uxbridge. I purchased some of its products at a farmers market before, yet the selection is so much wider at the farm store. There are non-pasteurized honey, raw creamed honey, raw creamed honey with cinnamon (I plan to spread it on bread), combed honey, bee pollen, and royal jelly. There are skin care products and beeswax candles as well. The beestore itself is neat, clean and more functional than decorative.
Staite's honey, both the wildflower and buckwheat varieties, are Canada number 1 grade honey. I use both varieties in beverages and as a bread spread. Staite's honey lasts longer and tastes purer than the ultra cheap grocery store honey.
I can attest that the pricing at the farm store, of every product and every size, is a few dollars cheaper than at farmers market. My household uses 2kg to 3kg of honey a year, so I save $10 to $15 by buying directly at source. The saving more than compensates the cost of gas to drive to the farm. Please note that pure honey stored in sealed containers NEVER spoils. You may stock up more than one year of supply when you make a trip to a bee farm.
My personal bias is to support Canadian beekeepers, especially local beekeepers in Ontario. It surely helps me to part with my money when the storekeeper at Staite's Honey is friendly, knowledgeable, and super willing to share his knowledge.
To get to Staite's Honey, drive north on Hwy 404, exit at Davis Drive and go east. Turn north onto York Durham Line/Durham Regional Rd 30. Turn right onto Ashworth Road and drive approximately 3km. Staite's Honey is on the north side of the road. For people who come from the east end, just drive north on York Durham Line/Durham Regional Rd 30, and follow the rest of the direction. read more
