If you are only looking for a traditional "American motel" experience, you will not find it at the…read moreAstoria Hotel, situated in a charming, very well-maintained building that is over one hundred years old. It's situated within easy walking distance of the most important sites in Trier and the railroad and bus stations. The Astoria delivers a German hotel experience. Its rooms are small by American standards but they are meticulously clean and tastefully decorated. We spent nine nights there in May 2015 and enjoyed every one of them. Hosts Paula and Sudhir meet the highest standards of hospitality. They are solicitous for the happiness and satisfaction of their guests and went out of their way on several occasions to assist us in obtaining airplane boarding passes as well as information on the mysterious #117 bus to the Luxembourg Airport. (The #117 bus, run by Weber, leaves Nordallee--a short block away from the hotel and goes directly to the airport in Luxembourg, eliminating the hassle of the usual train to Luxembourg followed by getting a bus to the airport.)
The Astoria provides a generous German buffet breakfast that includes orange juice, an assortment of fruits (fresh strawberries, kiwi, watermelon, canned peaches, mandarin oranges, plums, and pineapple), muesli and two dry cereals, an assortment of very good rolls, three lovely jams, cheese cubes, sautéed red peppers, soft-boiled eggs, and an assortment of nuts and raisins. Other cheeses and cold cuts are served at the tables. There's a coffee machine offering coffee, espresso, cappuccino, hot chocolate, and hot water for tea, all available at the touch of a finger - definitely enough to give you a very good start on the day. We enjoyed many pleasant conversations with both Paula and Sudhir at the desk and in the parlor area. Trier is a perfect place from which to explore the charming towns and the famous wines of the Mosel region and the Astoria is a lovely place to come 'home' to each day.
