Had a cake tasting set up. Their "butter cream" left a disgusting residue on my tongue and mouth…read more The butter cream was way too sweet and you couldn't distinguish flavors. It all tasted the same. Too loose consistency. The "butter cream" tasted like it was made of Crisco. It was terrible. Chocolate frosting was terrible and their "fillings" weren't that. It was the same terrible "butter cream". The cake was way too dry. Couldn't even cut it without it falling apart into a massive pile of crumbs. It was hard to get down. The vanilla tasted like an overly eggy, super cheap box mix. Fake vanilla flavor. It was the worse tasting vanilla cake I have ever tasted. Even my dad hated it and he loves cake. It was so bad I wanted to teach them how to make a cake. Give them some tips and pointers. I mean. How hard is it to go on Pinterest and watch YouTube videos!?! Then maybe they will learn how to do a cake. The chocolate cake was a basic meh cake. The spiced cake was ok. But again the crumb was terrible. It was like eating sand. The only saving Grace was the pumpkin cake. It was underbaked, but it was at least edible and enjoyable.... Until we paired with the frosting. And then it was ruined. I was in tears at the thought of this bakery being our only option for our wedding. We already wasted $25 for a tasting. Luckily we pushed back the wedding now have proper time to look for a bakery who does cakes from scratch and not from boxer mix. I won't have to worry about anyone getting sick because of the Crisco and sugar paste. Or having someone inhale the crumbs and I have to do CPR at the wedding.

Stopped by just to try a cupcake. Had the red velvet one and while it was good, I think I was just…read moreexpecting a bit richer flavor. They also have gelato which looked amazing but that will have to wait till I go back to the area.

I was so excited that Eric R. found The Vault when researching Emporia for us to visit! We came on…read morea day trip and this is the first time I have traversed Kansas without a cooler and ice packs when I actually needed it! The owner Becky was so knowledgeable about all things cheese, meat, and gourmet treats (and moved to Emporia from New Jersey)! We got to sample a lot of different things, left to explore, and returned before closing to buy our goods. She provided us a cooler and we bought a small bag of ice down the street. There are pestos, tapenades, jarred beets, and other interesting items on the shelves. There is a frozen case with locally raised meat. Yet the star of the show is the case in the center, with cheeses and charcuterie galore! The menu organizes the cheeses by blue, single serving cheeses, soft, semi-soft, firm, and hard. There is a large list of salamis and then whole muscle meats. There were two items I was interested in that were sold out, the duck prosciutto and the queijo toledo. I will have to make my way back! I ended up buying from the single serving cheese a truffle chevre (which I had tonight with fennel, it was amazing), petit basque (my friend Melinda C. asked for a sample and we were all blown away by it), Saxonshires (five cheddars layered in colorful stripes: Double Gloucester, Chesire, Caerphilly, Leicester, and cheddar), and bresaola (salted, air-dried Italian beef that I usually have to get at Dean and Deluca in KC). Melinda C. bought the bay blue and chevrelait (smoked goat) besides a few of the same ones I got. We both are so excited that tomorrow we are having a bread-cheese-cured beef smorgasbord for dinner! Bring your cooler bag and ice packs to Emporia because this place is a must-stop (and has really cute decor too)!
