Arguably the coolest thing that we saw in Italy.
St. Peters is visually breathtaking. The square is HUGE, and surprisingly clean! There are fountains, mind blowing statue carvings, and all manner of people for people watching. The nighttime view is somehow even more impressive than the daytime view. We walked through St Peters every day on our way out, and the view never got old.
If you want to stand outside in the square, and just gawk at the Basilica, and the fountains, and the tourists, you could easily spend an enjoyable day. If you decide to go inside the church, prepare to crap your pants with awe. Seriously, Rome is AMAZING, and St. Peters is right there at the top of the list. The artwork and just the stuff they were able to do in here is almost literally unbelievable. The carvings, and their just immense, intricate details really just has to be seen to be believed. I just walked around, mouth agape, at the massiveness of it all. There were people lining up to rub the feet of the statue of St. Peter, the Popes Swiss Guard stand right outside, protecting the entrance to the Vatican, the misses got our daughters rosary blessed in the holy water of the Holy Roman Church; its just a historical and visual free for all. I can't even imagine what this looks like when the Pope holds mass there. Its literally hard to believe that something as impressive as St. Peters is even possible.
The only downside to St. Peters, is the same thing that is wrong with EVERYWHERE in Rome: the GODDAMN PEDDLERS. Rome is positively inundated with pushy, HYPER AGGRESSIVE, annoying, infuriating, incessant, street salesman. They will scam you; they will probably rob you, given half the chance, and they are EVERYWHERE. But, a terse, strong "no" will usually back them up enough to take in the sights. Seriously, if I were to rank them, St. Peters is absolutely in the top 5 destinations in Rome, with the Coloseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona. read more
