Recommended by at least three different taxi drivers as the best beer in Norwich. I was a little…read morebut off because this place is just beer. No proper dinner, which makes it hard for us to justify three taxi rides as opposed to just two. But I managed to convince the gang to give it a try and as luck would have it, we were able to catch a ride later to a proper restaurant. Lots and lots and LOTS of beer choices here. Not only a few of the mass produced types, but they had a few cask ales on tap. And of course, their own Fat Cat Brews. I started off with one of the real ales - something called "Bitter & Twisted" which I'd never seen before. Good stuff. But who comes to a brewery pub and has something from somewhere else? So for number two, it was Fat Car's Honey Ale. Hand-pulled and absolutely lovely! Inside tables and some outside in their beer garden. They do have nuts and crisps, but again, no proper food. We'll be back. I really want to try their Cougar (a pale beer with lager malt) and the 8% "La Chouuffe".

The railway station is about 30 mins walk is away and is well worth the walk, 11&12 busses from Tombland goes past, and the stops are just outside.
Long list of beers on tap.

I was only in the Beer Cafe and not the museum or the brewery tour. This was after having a very…read morenice half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. It was fascinating to see the range of bottled beers in the shop and then the range of Greene King beers at the bar, many of which I had not seen elsewhere, some of which were trial beers. As one who generally prefers dark ales, I quickly latched on to the labels for trial Black IPA and trial Rye Beer, too fascinated by them to notice that they were not on hand pump. For the third beer in a tasting tray, I chose Rumrunner (rum-infused blonde). This turned out to be my favourite by far, simply because it was cask and had a nice, soft flavour, temperature and mouthfeel, just like that lovely half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. The Black IPA and Rye Beer by contrast had a very hard mouthfeel and lack of flavour because of the chilling and carbonation etc which comes from being keg ales. Both of these had the potential to be really flavoursome if only they had been available as cask beers. Please do that!

It was fun to learn the fascinating history, and the great ties to the community, And definitely gave me a new appreciation for the brewing process! The tasting room at the end was really fun and gave me a (non-committal) chance to try a lot of their offerings. (From the US and not so familiar with cask ales). Lazy Sipa and Ghostship were highlights for me.

The shop is one of the most standout things in Southwold; glass and light wood make up the exterior, and inside it's vast and full of light. Here you can buy everything Adnams makes, and more - gin, oak aged vodka, sloe gin, broadside whiskey, a range of beers, glasses, tshirts, tea towels and more. You can take part in some tasting towards the back of the shop, or have a coffee and piece of cake in the cafe at the back. New products available include ginger beer and Fat Sprat beer. If you take part in the tour, you're presented with a 10% discount, leading to us walking away with some sloe gin. Apparentley it's great with prosecco - who knew? The checkout staff were lovely, even giving us some baking tips, and you always walk away with a smile on your face. A must do in Southwold!
