Our son started at SMES in 2nd grade and just graduated from 8th grade. He is a better person for having gone to SMES. There have been bumps, challenges and big changes along the way, and obviously we went thru COVID, but in the end the full St Martin's Community is rich with love, care, and passion focused on building kids with character that can go out into the world and make it better. There is every kind of sports and activity you can imagine (they are always working to come up with new options) & it's very inclusive...for kids of all skill levels that want to have fun. The school is rigorous but not cut throat. The kids are pushed but aren't stressed 24/7. At Smes your kids is in a community that lets them be a kid and stumble and grow. I grew up in public school (which I loved!) but having seen one of our kids go thru a K-8th independent school education (and one not) there is a noticeable difference in their confidence and readiness to jump into high school! read more

Warning, if cliques form within the middle school campus the admin, staff and parents will place their heads in the sand. For a school that professes a caring, God centered community, the values do not match the actions, leaving much to be desired from this learning environment. There are teachers who demonstrate professionalism but the average middle school social drama is at a toxic level and you can tell that admin doesn't know how to keep up. Girls in middle school are even teasing a teacher who had their name changed due to a divorce. read more

Small school, under qualified teachers. They offer pre school but the teachers do not always have a BA or MA in Early Childhood Education. Often they hold a 90 hour MD state certification for daycare workers. I got the impression they misrepresent themselves. One of the pre school teachers, Stacey, was very rude and unprofessional when I had the chance to meet/interact with her. I also found the art teacher to be quite rude. 2/23/15 This school has exceptional teachers to include two AA Co. Independent School Teacher of the Year finalists. This is an AIMS accredited school and held to the highest standards. As parents of a child who has been through pre-school, elementary and in now in middle school, we could not have made a better choice. This is a great small class size school. My children have been attending here since Nursery. We decided to change for Kindergarten with our one son then realized how much he thrived from an encouraging and nurturing environment. So we brought him back and both children are making friends and love learning. Since we missed the Kindergarten program with our son I was almost sad to see what he missed out on when my other child went through the program. The teachers are well experienced. The following grades continue to keep us satisfied that we are providing our children with a solid education but most importantly a place where they feel comfortable and a sense of belonging. They both are excited about staying until the last grade (8th). Children who go here have moved on to Severn, Spaulding, Severna Park and other top high schools. There are also special days once a month where the Chesapeake Bay Foundation visits and conducts hands-on lessons. read more

My children ( 3 boys ) have attended this school for the past 14 years. They started as 3 year olds and went through 8th grade. My oldest graduated 2 years ago and attended a private high school where he takes all Honors and AP classes and is in a demanding 4 year Engineering Program. I'd say St. Martin's prepared him well! My 2nd son is graduating this year and has been accepted to all the schools he has applied - has been awarded an academic scholarship at one of the schools and was also invited to be a part of an Engineering Program. I'd say St. Martin's prepared him well. We will still be there for 3 more years with our youngest. This is a wonderful, loving school that teaches the kids to be prepared for high school and beyond. The teachers are exceptional - and with the Christian based environment the kids are taught values and are held to a high moral standard. They are taught to be kind children. This school is great on all levels. If you are looking for a school where your child will be known, valued and respected by everyone from the administrative staff, teachers and head of school, consider this school. My granddaughter has been here since pre K and has learned more than her friends that are two grades ahead. She looks forward to school every day and is thriving. The academics are rigorous and children learn values and to respect each other. It reminds me of how schools were when I was growing up and life was simpler. My daughter started at St Martin's in-the-field in middle school, after completing grades K - 5 at the local public elementary school. In elementary school she was an average student who simply got lost in the big classes. Her progress in middle school has been amazing, due to the smaller classes (21 in 8th grade) and also due to having the same teachers for the core subjects for all three grades. Her vocabulary and skills have improved, as have her test scores. When I email her teachers, I consistently receive answers within hours, always within a day. Her teachers are caring and supportive, while maintaining high standards. The head of the middle school is "nurturing" and the only drama I have noted is the usual drama involving middle school girls. read more
