My Dad has been very sick this year, from multiple strokes to lung cancer to pneumonia. We knew his health situation was very dire upon his most recent admission to St. Joseph's Hospital of Wayne (what my generation still thinks of as "Wayne General Hospital"). At 83 and terminally ill, it was clear Dad was not coming home. Still, we experienced great compassion from the nursing staff on floor 5W. Between nurses Angelique, Elvis and Matias, and nurse manager, Tiffany the kindness and care that Dad received up until his passing was top notch and very much appreciated by our family. I came here for a bad stomachache which easily passed away after something happened. Even after it went away before we got our room, they still made us go into the room and wait there. It took them 3 hours to take care of everything including medicine and discharge. I think this is where I went, I am not sure. But anyway, I went to St, Josephs to get a procedure done, and let me just tell you...the service was awesome. There were 2 people assigned to me. Their names were Mohamed & Leanna. Leanna was a student who was shadowing Mohammed, and let me just tell you....they were very calm, patient...and made me feel very comfortable. I was very nervous ay first, but Mohammed walked me through the ENTIRE procedure, coached me as to what to do so I would not feel out of place not even for a moment. And of course Leanna just smiled the entire time..lol. It was just very awesome, and I am grateful to have had a comfortable experience! read more

Let me start off by saying if I ever have to go to a hospital and this is where you consider taking me... just let me go without medical treatment . I had an AWFUL experience myself with them years ago but I won't even go into that. I am speaking on what I am going through right now that my brother is there. I have NEVER seen a worse staff, uneducated, lazy and rude! They were going over my brothers medical chart ( my brother is diabetic, an amputee and has heart and breathing issues) they were stating his meds and he explained one was incorrect and that he had been off of it for almost two months already. They in their ignorance decided " hey let's give it to him anyway" which caused his blood pressure to drop dangerously low, he became very dizzy and they told him he had to wear an "alarm" so that he wouldn't get up and fall. A little while after he needed the bathroom he rang the bell for ten minutes straight no one came. So he got up himself they then finally came in and we're supposed to "assist" my brother cleaning himself , I will never even say what they left all over his backside . How do you treat a human like that? I went and became enraged as the nurses (who were just standing around talking) looked me in the eye and lied to my face . I hope that "person" has a loved one in the hospital one day who gets treated the same way. I also asked her why he wasn't given pain meds to which he said it was because of his low blood pressure... the issue which THEY caused so my brother had to suffer in pain for hours! She finally called the doctor and it was time for visiting hours to end so I entrusted that she would follow the doctor's instructions and give him pain meds . Nope she didn't ! It wasn't until the next morning that the doctor came and saw she never gave him any so he made her give it to my brother right away. Thanks to these idiots my brother is now insisting on signing himself out today because he is so terrified that he's going to end up dead being there. I will be contacting a lawyer we have everything documented. Do not take your loved ones there. It is nothing but a death trap. I also want to note that while we were in the emergency room, waiting for my brother to get a bed a heroin addict came in after him and got a bed and a room before him. I'm sorry, but that is not acceptable. My brothers fighting for his life. He wants to live the other person clearly doesn't care about there's so why should he get special treatment? read more

The rehab therapist I top notch work with me for over three weeks. I am now able to walk with assistance and will be going home shortly.

I have had good care and terrible care at St Josephs hospital. Was in for 8 days with a kidney infection and needed medication that can only be admisstered through an IV. My room was right by the nurses brake room and they went in and out all day and night and I couldn't get any rest. The entire floor was empty I was the only patient I asked to be moved but was told no. No reason just no. The infection would not get better so I was discharged with the IV port still in because I had to go back every morning so the treatment could continue. The nurses took forever to come when I ran the bell. Food was discussing. I actually lost 8 pounds while there. On another occasion I was in a bad car accident and brought in by ambitious. I waited over 2 hours before a doctor came into see me and ordered tests. It took another hour before someone came in to take me to have the test. Good thing I was not bleeding or had any broken bones. My kidney doctor is a resident there and I told him I would never go there again and he said he is also a resident doctor at Chilton Hospital in Pompton plains but their reviews are even worse read more

Dating someone in the medical field I try to be very sympathetic to nurses and doctors. No one knows what they go through. But to sit in a pool of my own puss and blood with no one checking on me was the most horrific thing I've ever experienced at a hospital. No one responded to my nurse button and when I finally got enough energy to get up and ask for help the entire team was so lackadaisical I decided to just clean myself up and go to another hospital. They are horrible from beginning to end...Walk in to register and workers are discussing work matters amongst themselves instead of asking how may I assist you. Checking vitals was ok experience; Finally get a bed and the wait was horrendous; blood work taken, left behind packaging and loose items left behind. On March 26 2023, my father Victor Scillieri passed on and Saint Joseph's Hospital (Wayne) literally lost him. The irony is a hospital daring to use the name Saint Joseph, a compassionate man and the saint of the dying, is not lost on our family. He died in the arms of Mary and Jesus. My father died alone because your overnight doctor and the doctor who took over for him aggressively lied that he telephoned us five times at 3:30am as my father was failing and three times at 6am when he passed. You did not consider the phone records would show the blatant lies. My son went to the hospital at noon to visit him and was told my father was discharged to me, his daughter. My son called me, I called the number the hospital lobby receptionist gave my son to track down his grandfather on his own. I was transferred all over the hospital. One of the hospital's representatives, yelled at me I was nasty and hung up on me. I was continuously transferred and told my father was transported to hospice but that was scheduled for the next day. For close to an hour my son was told by the hospital's front desk in the lobby to call around the hospital on his own, figure it out and gave him a useless phone number. The receptionist explained the patient log indicated he was discharged. I called the local police and my son relayed to the receptionist that the police were on their way. That was when the receptionist finally called up to the fifth floor Nursing Station. The floor doctor explained to my son, "Sorry, your grandfather expired. He passed at 6am and the staff tried to call your family, but no one answered the phone." My son began to walk away but went back to the doctor and asked, "Where is he?" The cold response was, "He is in the morgue." I arrived at the hospital and the fifth-floor doctor and nursing supervisor came down to meet with me in the public hall. They claimed at 3:30am the overnight doctor unsuccessfully telephoned me five times. When the fifth-floor doctor started his shift at 7am along with the nursing supervisor, they both claimed the hospital tried to call three times at 6am when my father passed. To address the phone calls, they claimed to have made - they are not on my IPhone's missed calls register nor on the Verizon statement plus they confirmed that the hospital called the correct phone number and showed me their records. I explained, "We would have liked to have sat with him as he passed and said good-bye." At least now we would like to say good-bye, but they explained it had to be in the morgue. Think how sad it all is - he had passed at least seven hours, earlier and no one cared who had made their careers caring for the ill. Was he scared? Did he feel abandoned? You cannot realistically nor accurately answer those questions. The doctor was very cold and insulting. He kept insisting they called and I kept showing him my phone and angrily he said, "That is Thursday!" I had to explain to look at the recent calls. His response, "I do not want to see your phone, again!" I asked the doctor and nursing supervisor, "If you were in my shoes, you would not feel very good about this situation and the fifth-floor doctor shot back, "You came in here all hot!" I responded, "Really? You lost my father, let him die alone and did not tell us he passed." I kept asking to see the CEO of St. Joseph's, but they repeated the tired old script that there were other people to talk to me first. My sister joined me and we spent four and half hours in a public hallway being re-victimized by the hospital with people walking through us and stepping over my daughter who was sitting on the floor sobbing. The nursing supervisor returned with another doctor, and she was "sorry" but continues with the nonexistent phone calls and we must see him in the morgue. We go nowhere fast. The nursing supervisor brings the clinical director who arranges for us to view my father in a private room with a priest. Before she could say a word, I calmly and directly said to her, "We were not there when my father passed nor notified that he had passed on. If they had followed their own protocol, they would have sent the local police to my home. So now, we will call the police desk and find whom the officer was that was assigned to come to my home and did not." The clinical director responded, "There is no need to do that." I said, "because your hospital did not do that." He was a War World II veteran, and he had a family. We have been re-victimized over and over because of this hospital's errors, lies, nothing can push back time and we cannot sit with him as he passes. You could have called, and we could have entered through the ER to his room in the middle of the night, but that is not what happened. The senior vice president opened an investigation. Two days ago, 4/28, I tried to follow up. The same representative answered the phone and hung up on me and the senior vice president did not return my call. read more

My son and I stayed overnight at St Joseph's Sleep center at the Wayne campus and we had both positive and negative experiences. We arrived early but it is SO dark there that we realized we were at the wrong building and had to walk in the dark to the main hospital building. I asked a doctor who was leaving if I was in the right place and he was SO nice he walked us in through the employee entrance so we wouldn't be late. I really wish I remembered his name because he was so awesome and kind. At the security desk, we met our sleep technician, who was also great! The sleep lab basically has an office and a few hospital rooms with full sized beds, the equipment needed for the study, a camera, microphone, etc. They also include a bathroom with a shower. This was a lot less homely than I expected but honestly we were there for a professional sleep study so I don't know why I expected anything more comfortable. There was also a very small cot for me to sleep on which was honestly the worst part of my experience because the frame and springs were digging into me all night and I barely slept. My son was very uncomfortable as well and didn't sleep well which was to be expected considering he had a bunch of wires all over him. The process of putting the electrodes/monitors all over him took about 40 minutes and he was able to watch TV during it. However, once she was done - she tested everything and turned off the TV, took the remote with her, and turned off the lights kind of abruptly. I wasn't allowed to use my phone because it would interfere with the test, so I just laid there in the dark for an hour or two before I could fall asleep. Our technician was great overall and was completely on top of everything. She even gave us a wake-up call a bit early so we would be ready to leave on time. I hope we never have to do it again because it was so uncomfortable for us both, but if we ever did -- we would 100% return to this campus. read more

ER hospital rooms are dirty and unsanitary (especially for it to be a hospital). There should be no way the next patient should be walking into a dirty room. There are way too many donations coming into this hospital for this type of presentation to be taking place. My mother 86 yrs old at the time had kidney cancer removed. During recovery she went thru physical abuse by a female and male nurses by slapping/hitting her face because she was disoriented and under stress and unable to follow commands. She had a major kidney surgery and the Dr.. the next day went away on vacation leaving someone else in charge of her care. During recovery she ended having seizures which she never had before from being over dozed with lorozepam, clonozepam, and xanax all at the same time; she was unable to wake up the next day. At that time, she began having seizures for the rest of her life. If someone reports this to the main office they treat you as a troublemaker and can care less for family's concern about patient safety. Horrible staff. Keep out. read more

I have to share my story of my experience at St Joseph's Hospital in Wayne yesterday. IT WAS AWFUL!! Avoid this hospital like the plague. I drove myself from the urgent care right next door when they referred me for an emergency CAT scan. In pain and a little delirious, I went to the wrong entrance. I shuffled in and told them I was referred for emergency testing, and the woman said to me "oh, this is the wrong entrance. You have to go down the hall, through the double doors, make a left, a right and you'll get there." No wheelchair was offered. It was blatantly obvious how much distress I was in and how much difficulty I had moving. No services or help offered. Made it to the ER part. The woman doing my intake could NOT get the meds I'm currently taking right in the computer. Had to correct her multiple times. Gets me through intake, and says 'you're in room X down the hall'. Again, no wheelchair and I shuffle my way down. I get to a room with a stretcher with no sheet or pillow. I'm exhausted, in pain and just want to lay down. My husband had a job interview and wasn't able to join me yet. I laid on the stretcher for 30 minutes until he got there and could ask for those things. Meanwhile, I heard staff RIGHT OUTSIDE MY DOOR just bullshitting with each other the whole time. Not once did anyone check in on me. Lou shows up and asks for those items. We were told "it's really hard to get a pillow around here" WTF?! An hour later, someone comes in with a bunch of towels in a pillowcase and the thing is rock hard but better than nothing. They run the tests and the doc comes in with the results. Diverticulitis. We ask the obvious question - what is safe to eat. He's perplexed, says they have no information it. Mentions the Low Residue diet and tells me to look it up when we get home. I get an RX for meds, he goes over it with me and tells me I have to take it twice a day. They discharge me. I'm alone again, my husband went to get the car and pull it up to the front door. They wave me off, again no wheelchair even though I'm still in a great deal of pain, and I walk out alone. We pick up the RX and it says take THREE times a day. And the bottle says it was prescribed by a doctor I never even saw. Looked at my discharge papers and the same doctor is listed there too. HORRIBLE!!!!! I will NEVER go there again. And it's not like they were busy with tons of trauma victims or something. It was just me and 1 other person in another room. Oh, and the guy doing construction work with drills going through metal that did NOTHING to help my splitting headache. Seriously, if you are trouble and need an ER - go ANYWHERE else. read more

My father was at the ER three times in the past month for difficulty breathing, severe chest pain and coughing up blood (that was the second time). Time 1: X-ray showed fluid in his lungs, they gave him pain killers and antibiotics for pneumonia, and sent him home. Time 2: X-ray showed no fluid and the doctor refused to give him pain killers because she "gave them to him last time". She said she had no idea why he was in so much pain, administered Tylenol, told him "coughing up blood isn't something to worry about" and sent him home. (Also a prescription for an inhaler and a decongestant). Time 3: After consulting a doctor who's, you know, competent, he gets a CAT scan and is told to go immediately back to the ER - he has pulmonary (lung) blood clots. BLOOD. CLOTS. IN BOTH LUNGS. An older patient in AFIB, complaining of recurring chest pain and inability to breathe - with the added fun of expelling blood from his airway on his second visit. That doesn't set off ANY alarms? Like, not even a bell? I don't know about the hospital's neonatal unit or any other services but for emergencies - go elsewhere. I'd recommend this hospital for a scraped knee, maybe a paper cut. Something that you're okay with hearing "here's a Tylenol". read more

Horrible experience. Went in with lower back and pain. Was treated for a muscle strain. Given meds and sent home. Pain got worse so went to hackensack. They actually put their hands on me and found out it was a blood clot. Made a complaint and talked to head of the er. He said they followed proper protocol. My daughter and I were present on June 1st, 2022 due to an severly injured bruised foot. I thought that it was broken. We were in a emergency filled to capacity for several (6) hours. After finally seeing the doctor and having the Xrays reviewed. He indicated he was going to give her a boot or some type of shoe to help the injured foot. Thank God it wasn't broken. Well the nurse slapped an ace bandage and didn't even clarify and or suggest going to a medical supply place to purchase one? Obviously they didn't have it in stock. Why didn't her inform me? I had to return inside after wheeling my daughter into the car to correct the required paperwork, although; we had the discussion when we first met. We had a family member that recently passed away there to be exact May 10th and she was taken from Lakeview rehabilitation in Brookdale she had a a trick in her throat she had cancer full blown cancer throughout the body okay we understand that the thing what I don't like and I think was very disrespectful respectful to our deceased family member and our family when we went there to identify her number one they made us wait over an hour oh they had to get her ready the nurse is on nurses and everything was in a meeting finally they take us downstairs to identify her my son almost had a heart attack they never closed her eyes her eyes was wide open staring at us wanted this a family member departs us before you go to identify the body they're supposed to prepare the body for you to identify the should have been closed he ran he's a 43 year old man I'm going on 63 and never in my life have I ever seen or heard of anything like this it was very disrespectful to odyssey's family and also to us and I am also thinking about bringing this to a news channels attention to because this I don't ever want anybody to go through this again or you can know I cannot read this place at all I give it zero stars for something like that this is something we're going to have to live with the rest of our life and see how laying on that gurney like that nice going St Joseph's read more

Horrible experience today in the ER. While we waited a man came in hacking loudly and throwing up violently and the staff did nothing to help him. To make things worst the patient was potentially exposing everyone in the waiting room area with Covid? It was unbelievable to me that no one from the staff bothered to act promptly to diffuse the situation. There was no sanitizing afterwards either. I noticed it wasn't until I said something to one of the nurses that they took the patient beyond the double doors away from the waiting room. 3.5 stars. Big big hospital with ample, FREE parking. Cafeteria's not bad, salad bar, soup choices and my fav part a DUNKIN DONUTS COFFEE BAR!!!! WITH their original flavored coffees including hazelnut and french vanilla *tear*! complete w/DnD styrofoam cups :) They also have decent meal deals. Good luck trying to find food though cause it closes at 130 and the other place to get food is only open till 7 i think n only offers two soups, coffee and whatever leftover cold sandwiches, fruit and yogurt thats available. They have plans to renovate and create a huge state of the art waiting area for patients and families, looks nice. Tons of elevators ensure you won't wait more than a few seconds for one. My husband of 54 years has just spent days short of 8 weeks in St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital. He was admitted with Covid pneumonia to the ICU unit. He stayed there nearly 6 weeks. Then he went to the 6th floor where things started to turn around, after that the 4th floor where he was weaned off the ventilator. I thought at many times he was going to die. The ventilator, central line, jpeg, eventually dialysis all so distressing. However the doctors and nurse practitioners said he'd get better. I doubted it!!!! Happy to say he is in Lakeview rehab and will be home soon. St. Joseph's Wayne staff is awesome and know what they're doing. Thank you healthcare workers for your dedication!!!!!!!!!! read more

First, let me say I was scheduled for a cardio cath at 11 a.m., I had a nurse Mary from beginning to end. She was so loveable, kind, and took care of me to the max!!! That is the only reason I am giving them a 5 star because of this RN. For Cardiologist Rex Ghassemi he would get a 1 star from me, he was 3 hours late, that to me is very unprofessional. My husband was in the ER three times. Last October of 2018 and he received excellent care. He had pneumonia and had waited a week before giving in and finally going for help. We arrived in the ER and were he was immediately treated. All the tests were rapidly performed and he was released in 2 1/2 hours. He was in the ER on Feb 11, 2019 and he was immediately treated again received excellent care. This time he had an infection and fluid in his lungs and stayed six days. We could not get over how everyone in that hospital was so kind, courteous and efficient from the doctors, nurses and all the way down. He went to the ER again on March 11, 2019 because he was complaining of chest pains. Again, immediately treated and admitted. This hospital is only 5 minutes from our home and is so convenient for us. read more
