Beyond disappointed at my experience with the Mamaroneck Kumon. If you want a place that cares…read moreabout children, definitely suggest looking elsewhere. I heard great things about Kumon, but this particular franchise was cold, the owner condescending and rude and the staff disengaged and unfriendly. We arrived for a scheduled assessment and introduction to Kumon. After waiting several minutes (where a staff person saw us but did not feel it necessary to greet or acknowledge us in any way so we stood awkwardly at the door unsure what to do) my daughter was called in and, without any introduction or explanation, was told to sit and take a test. The atmosphere was almost punitive. During the ten minute test, the 3 staff onsite were talking and laughing loudly. Perhaps they felt since they were speaking in a foreign language it would not be disruptive, but the level of disrespect for the kids trying to focus on their work was jarring. After her test, I was invited in to talk to the owner and discuss next steps for my child. There again no greeting, no explanation of the program, how Kumon works, how they can help. Kumico never bothered to even say hello or introduce herself. She did not ask any questions about my child, our goals, where she goes to school....just sat me down and told me that my child is 'confused' and 'very behind'. This place is not warm, not engaging, not friendly and while the Kumon system might work, I can't imagine sending any child here to feel good about themselves or be inspired to learn.

Expectations are high, and not everyone is the right fit, but those who are here truly thrive. Every year brings new, meaningful programs -- this year a college-level psychology course and hands-on science research like the Oyster Project. Our Headmaster is caring, involved, and deeply loved -- every student's best friend, yet strong, thoughtful, and fair. The teachers are talented, inspiring, and passionate about what they do. The level of enthusiasm across the school is outstanding. What truly sets T-D apart is its spirit of unity. Students of all ages know and support each other -- it's heartwarming to see a first grader call out to a senior by name with a curious question and get a kind smile in return. This sense of belonging and genuine care fills the campus with joy. Thornton-Donovan isn't just a school -- it's a living example of what education should be: knowledge with heart, discipline with kindness, and community that lasts a lifetime. When you are a part of T-D, you are family.

I write this review to save a future parent and child the aggravation, discrimination, and racism that occurs within this school. I was not the only poc student that experienced this, and unfortunately I probably wasn't the last. I experienced several acts of racism, in front of faculty and behind closed doors, and each case practically fell on deaf ears. The administration will make it seem as though the situation has been handled but that's the farthest from the truth. The same perpetrators will still be rewarded in the end, if they are favored by faculty. The faculty also has a hand in the racism as well, whether they openly support it, reward the aggressors in the end, or commit their own acts of micro or macro aggressions. I say all this to say, save your time, and save your money. The education is also subpar at best. Even if you are not a poc student, if you don't feel like wasting your money, don't send your child here. The most they'll learn is the lyrics to sweet Caroline . Not trying to be rude at all, but it's the truth. Do with this information what you will.

Our first ride was the Ferris Wheel...I haven't been on one for 11 years since the Toys R US (Times Square location). When it started to spin, I freaked out and gripped the pole tightly as my friend was making sure that my heart didn't leaped out lol I couldn't help myself...I screamed at the top of my lungs lol We had 8 tickets left and it was perfect to ride Swing...this ride was better and not so up in the air. After we got off the ride, damn we both felt so dizzy. I treated my friend to Chuck's Shoot Til You Win...nice each cup has a number written inside the cup and my friend still won something but mad small lol My friend treated us to Whac A Mole and how rude he beat me by 30 points...of course, he won a snake stuff animal. My three children received an excellent education at the school and went on to be awarded scholarships for both high school and college. They are now amazing adults. I know that this is in no small part owed to the education they received during their schooling from Nursery through 8th grade at OLBS as well as the welcoming and nurturing environment found there. When it came time for my Grandchildren to begin their schooling I was very happy that their parents chose Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Academy. The principal is fantastic. She is a true professional who cares for every student. There are many volunteers who work tirelessly to not only raise funds for the school but also build a community among the parents and run events that benefit the students. Enrollment is always growing which is a strong sign that the school is well loved has a positive reputation and following. The school has invested in the academic program, technology, the facility. There is a wonderful full time security guard on the premises and an up to date cameras system to keep the children safe. They also have a professionally trained guidance counselor available to all students. All of this in addition to a top notch music program, enrichment activities and other learning opportunities that will round out the children's skills and prepare them for the future. I highly recommend OLBSCA to anyone who wants their children to get an outstanding education in a caring and safe environment. My grandchildren would not be there if their parents had any reservations! They had a great experience there and chose for their children to attend for that reason!

This is a warm, safe, child-centric place. It is amazing after lunch to see the children settle down for quiet time and then later see them go out to Bennett Park as a group. When a child has a problem they help the child solve it. They are especially good at defusing conflicts between children. The rules for the children are reasonable and clear and consistent. Rainbow Room does not always take the best behaved and easiest kids. They knowingly take on some true challenges. The staff are communicators. When there is a problem they talk about it with the children (especially) and with the parents. I think this is the key to their success. They perform beautifully in emergencies! Our level of trust in Rainbow Room is off the charts. There is an emphasis on crafts projects and providing an enriched environment. Rainbow Room doesn't promise to make kids smart and competition is deemphasized. Nonetheless in our small group 2 kids tested into city wide talented and gifted programs. Not too shabby!
