My family member was transferred to St . Joseph's Providence hospital's ICU and had to have a surgery which the surgeon said would cause extreme pain afterwards. The hospital staff knew what medications my family member was prescribed by their doctor and was taking before being transferred to their ICU, but they were not giving my family member their prescribed medication as they are required to do. My family member was cut off of their medications instead of tapering off which could cause stroke which they should have known working in the medical field. Putting any patient in a dangerous situation is not acceptable. My family member did survive septic shock after being in the ICU at St.Joseph Hospital which I am very thankful for. The bill they received just for the ambulance ride from the hospital in Fortuna to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka and their care for not quite 24 hours in Fortuna and part of their care at St.Joseph Hospital was a million dollars. They had not received the bill from the doctor yet as they bill seperately. Other than one nurse who was very rude and them not giving my family member their prescribed medication because they didn't think they needed to take it, they saved my family member's life. They need to work on not going by their own opinion when taking care of their patients though because that is dangerous and could potentially be fatal for the patient. read more

Still I keep being notified around " $2000.00 " is owed , the last time while trying to check in for my next doctor appointment , If after each call you are told it has been corrected ( ignore the bill ) , one begins to wonder how many other mistakes are being made because of management procedure's ? My review is in the directi Mion of the actual procedure doctor..Dr. Palmer of Harrison Ave office in eureka,ca.. while the staff did their jobs with compassion and profetioonalism ,Dr. Palmer showed no professionalism or compassion..As they wheeled me in the room I saw Dr Palmer sitting in a chair with an angry look on his face staring at his watch. He never looked at me or even said hello. Even when he got up and approached the table and stood in front of .me with the scope in his hand did he even acknowledge me.. I was put under sedation..and I can remember 3 separate times coming to screaming in pain ..... Woke up in recovery to oxygen mask still on and the blood pressure machine tightening around my arm and the strong smell of urine in my blankets and cramping like I haven't felt since a teenager.... He never came to see how I was or say sorry you had it so ruff in there. Nothing....I have the feeling I f a Rape victim not sexually, but po ower anger and control....I asked the nurse if anyone had ever told her that Dr.Palmer had the bedside manners of a cockroach and she leaned down and whispered that yes she had heard that before ... As I was wheeled to the car .a nurse told me that he has the same report with the nurses..and that she was so sorry I had such an awful experience. And that I could always call administration if I felt I wanted to file a complaint . I really have the feeling of a violated rape victim . He hurt me. And had no remorse or compassion about it....and if he had reviewed my case he would have known I have diverticulitis instead of reporting like he had discovered it...I'm sure that was the pain I had felt was his shoving the scope into those areas.... It was a nightmare and he didn't have an ounce of compassion or anything . For what he had put me through. . I plan to file a complaint with the medical board as well ..So be Warned don't go to Palmer..find someone else for your medical needs, go out of the area if needed .I won't go back to him.... read more

WOW! So many horrible experiences in this *&%$$! hospital! Well, here's another one. Had to wait hours when there was only one other person in the waiting room. My 86 year old father was in extreme pain and we were greeted at the front desk by a rude nurse that asked us what we needed. In other words what the hell are you doing here? This was how we were greeted. I knew it would be hell because, I have had many horrible experiences at this ER over the years. The staff that helped my father back to a room where we had to wait forever once again, was very nice. The nurses in the back working the floor were simply rude and made it clear that they have no empathy for any person waiting to be seen. My father was freezing and in so much pain but did anyone ask if we needed anything or check on him? No! I had to find someone and ask for blankets and they handed them to me. I would have thought a nurse would bring the blankets in and put them over my father and show some concern but, that didn't happen. I think many of these nurses might consider a different profession such as a guard in a prison. As for myself, I have walked out of this ER several times because I was tired of waiting to be seen and no one even noticed that I left. Unless I am near death I wouldn't dream of coming to this ER for care because you can die in the waiting room and no one would notice! I stood in the door way watching these nurses sitting around chatting instead of checking on people there to be given care. They rush you into a room and do as little as possible and then leave and you don't see them again for hours and hours. I will say that the doctor was caring and professional but the doctor hands her orders over to the staff to follow through on and then you are there waiting again forever to be released. It took the nurses an hour and a half to bring the paper work to release my father. The doctor told us we were free to go as soon as they brought the paper work and that should have taken maybe 10 min.We came into the ER at 11pm and left at 530 am and my father was in as much pain as he was upon arriving! Thanks for nothing but a prescription which we had to wait until 1pm to get filled! Most people come to the ER because they are in PAIN and need something to take the pain away! Right?! I'm sure any of these nurses would want someone to take their pain away if it was them waiting in the ER in pain. Why is that so difficult to understand if you are a nurse. Most people want to go HOME as well when they don't feel well. They don't enjoy waiting for hours at a hospital that isn't concerned about their pain or needs usually in the middle of the night. People generally want to be sleeping between 11pm and 530 am. The profession of being a nurse is supposed to be about caring for people and willingness to help people who need care. People are not all alike just because someone is elderly doesn't mean you should assume all old people are not mentally sound. My father is very mentally sound but the nurses assumed he wasn't by the manner in which they spoke to him. I felt offended instantly and it made me want to say something brutally blunt in his defense. They would ask him a question and not give him the chance to answer when he was in severe pain! I had to but in and answer for him so they would at least give him the time to explain so they would understand. Why are you asking questions if you already assume you know the answers? Or assume that the person doesn't know what they are talking about because of their age. I would hate to see how an elderly person would be treated if they had no one there with them to help look out for them. People really don't want to show respect to the elderly today and they think it is acceptable. WELL, IT ISN'T! The one person that should have been taken out of the ER in a wheel chair was my father but, did that happen? NO! No one offered and it didn't even cross their minds that it would be compassionate to do so. They put a person that was quite healthy and about 20 years old in a wheel chair as if she needed one. She didn't appear to need one. My father on the other hand obviously did need a wheel chair. I had to ask for an ice pack as well and the nurse told me this was all she had and it wasn't really an ice pack. Since when does the hospital not have ICE PACKS? I HATE THIS HOSPITAL! I have a few more horrific stories about this place but, I have already written a novel. Sorry, this is so painfully long. It's never simple when a person is treated so badly by people that their job is to treat people with care. Waited 3 hours in the emergency room only for my physician to not listen to what I had to say. When I started crying she asked "why are you crying for?" And when I discussed my exhaustion from work she told me "I work 80 hours a week and I'm twice your age." Many people waited even longer than I did, and when I was given my room, I overheard the nurses standing and chatting as if the waiting room wasn't packed with people about to faint or vomit. St. Joseph is the first hospital to ever made me soo upset that I cried and felt dehumanize. It's a long story to what happen to me in this horrible place. To tell all of this story will take pages. Cut it short, I'm going to say the staffs, nurses and doctors are only here for the paycheck and not here for the patients. They say they want to save lives but really they let the color of another individual define who gets to be treated. Also they violated against Hipaa rules. I'll just say that that night I was at the hospital, I got to hear another patients diagnose and health problems coming out from a doctors mouth. This place is a joke if I could give it a 0 I would. Nobody seems to know what's going on. My mom is having gallbladder surgery and it took them almost a week to get it scheduled, her room was dirty the people cleaning came in used a dust mop on the floor and left did not clean another thing. Her room did not get cleaned again until she complained. She has seen two different surgeons to do the due to one rotating out. Why is it we are stuck with second rate health care up here on the north coast. Then they wonder why people leave the area for better healthcare. Hospitals in this area terrify me; mainly because of the staff. They've done a nice job with the remodeling; finally. Those poor people that were in the hospital at any point over the last 6 years have had to listen to nothing but construction sounds. My sister was put in a room here once for a night before being transferred to a better hospital, and not only did I find a pill of Ritalin on the floor in the bathroom, but it hadn't been cleaned and still had someone's shit in the toilet. This was a complete mess from beginning to end. Took my husband because he hurt his back. He was there for hours when he was told the MRI machine was broken. He had to go back the next day and start all over from step one. Eight hours later, he gets to leave. When he reviews his paperwork, it has someone else's injury information!! Also, this is the first time I had a hospital employee tell me it was not her job to help us. When you get someone at the ER, maybe don't tell them it's not your job, because it really is. I came into this ER with horrible chest pain and a severe panic attack. The nurses treated me like I was a total hassle to them. DR Holloway was great- I could tell he actually cared about me and was doing his best to treat my symptoms. I also had DR Goldberg who was great last time and the time previously I saw him- he really got it right w the medication and made me feel much better so thank you Dr. Holloway and Dr. Goldberg. I needed compassion and you guys showed it! Unfortunately the nurses acted like they couldn't have cared less which is very upsetting to me. read more

(I chose this listing...there are several different addies here on Yelp, assuming it is the main one in Eureka). While we are a little upset at recent St Joe's policy re women's reproductive rights, we had a referral to the hospital for an echocardiogram for our youngest. We were met at the door by a very kind woman who led us through the labyrinthine halls of the new wing, and then given minimal paperwork to fill out, more paperwork, and then handed to our technician, Kim, who was all that is wonderful and reassuring. Kid and both parents piled into the room and watched the exam. Granted, this is only a bit of what one might experience at this hospital, but we were pleased by the kindness and friendliness of staff. read more

Then he saw a PA. NOT a DR. Who spent 5 minutes with him poked his back with her finger and said ya it's swollen. He requested and X-ray. She wouldn't order it He also asked for an anti inflammatory shot which he has gotten before for this ... she said we don't do those here Then proceeded to treat him like a druggie he only wanted the anti inflammatory. But she gave him pain killers anyway which did. Nothing for him since he needed nerve medication. He then sat there for 2 .5 more hours to be processed out and to get what he thought was a prescription for an anti inflammatory So 5 hours for. Nothing and an expensive bill to show for it. After being in pain over the weekend he finally got into his DR. Who ordered an x-ray. And got him on the correct medication ST JOES WHAT A JOKE!!! read more

The worst. The WORST hospital that I've ever been to. I came in by ambulance for a concussion after an auto accident and was sat in a chair without any neck brace or any support for 4 hours. I was released without ever seeing a doctor. When my partner came in they left her in the waiting room in excruciating pain for 2 hours and never even did an X-ray on her. If I could give minus stars I would. Our mother was admitted for a broken hip. She was doing well following surgery and had started rehab. Then the hospital began over medicating her, more than doubling the amount of morphine prescribed, resulting in a total downward spiral of her health. On the 17th of October, something happened with the nursing staff and no one showed up to assist patients on the floor for at least 5 1/2 hours. My sister walked up and down the hall trying to find someone to assist our mother because she had not been turned, water had not been provided, assistance to bathroom facilities, etc. At a meeting today, we heard that there may have been as many as 10 nurses that quit that day, which would explain the total lack of care provided to the patients. If you have to utilize the services of this subpar hospital, please have family or friends available to advocate on your behalf. Do not be afraid to speak up for your right to be treated with respect, dignity and at least the minimal standard of care required by the nursing profession and hospital. read more

After going to the ER for abdominal pain and leg pain it took them 10 hours to get a ctscan. Then it took another 2 hours to get the results that showed nothing wrong. They admitted me to the hospital that morning after being in the ER for 17 hours. After another day went by they took and ultrasound of my leg to only get the results the next afternoon. They said nothing is wrong and I can go home. Really nothing is wrong leg is swollen and have pain and can not walk on it but you can go home. Great service. I will just get in my car and go to San Francisco. I hate this hospital. Good luck people. read more

Horrible. Horrible Horrible. They have not even updated their website. I called them based on the fact that their doctors are accepting new patients. When I called them to book an appointment for one of the doctors showing on the website as accepting patients, I was told the doctor has retired. Amanda and her colleague (from Primary Care Speciality office) said there are no doctors accepting new patients while their website says otherwise. My husband injured his knee and all we wanted is to see a doctor and get an MRI done. They kept on saying, no doctor is accepting any patients and they cannot help. Sorry. SORRRYYYYY..... is that even a legit hospital where they turn away people in need. Such a lackadiasical attitude of the staff who just get paid to sit there and refuse patients. The worst hospital in California. No wonder people are leaving Humboldt County due medical reason, mainly due to this callousness of the St. Joseph hospital management. The doctors were nice except one guy that kept telling my friend what she should do and telling us all the obvious things that we have to do just in case of what I was going through. He treated us like crap. But the rest of the nurses/doctors were nice. I'd have to give it three stars. Not the biggest fan of this hospital. E.R. wait time is absurd. Wife took Grampa to ER. Having diabetic issues, weak, vomiting. They Said he was low priority. 2 hours later she texted Still waiting. Grandma came to ER to relieve her @ 2.5 hours. 3.25 hrs later he got in. Was in very serious condition by then. Wow, do something about this PLEASE. Been there 3 times in a month for Grandpa. Average wait time is 3 hours just to get into a room. Then you have to wait for the Doctor. It doesn't matter if it's morning, noon or evening. Waiting is HORRIBLE no matter what time. My daughter has an infection and needed to see an ER physician to get antibiotics to clear it up. We have been in the ER for over 3 hours and I get the bad feeling she's not going to be seen for awhile. I asked the receptionist if he could give us a time frame as to when she will be seen as we have to make a dangerous drive back home and I'd rather not do this drive at night and he said he couldn't help us. I have never been to an ER with such incompetent, uncaring staff. I went in with a severe tooth and sinus infection, and one Dr. Meeta Patel glanced in my throat for 10 seconds and then turned to leave. When I asked if she was going to run blood work to check on the infection, she tried to tell me that no hospital runs blood work on patients in ER (!). She also said that tooth and sinus infections don't spread and are really of no concern at all! I asked her to please write that down for me, because I wanted documentation that she-- a supposed trained medical professional-- believed that. She said that she would, and stomped off (she didn't). When I expressed to the discharge nurse that I felt that I hadn't gotten proper care-- the discharge nurse told me that I had other options in terms of hospitals in the area and that I should go to one of them next time! I will! They seem to be accustomed to druggies and degenerates out for pain meds-- because they approach legitimate patients who are seeking treatment in the same way. I know that they are over-run as there are no urgent care facilities in the area. But that does not excuse taking a flippant approach to ill people who are there seeking treatment! And paying probably $700 for the service! It was the worst ER experience of my life. I will never go to this place again-- and will sue their pants off if I have complications due to wasting an evening there! read more

This place is an absolute joke. If I could give it negative stars I would. Remodeling is done and it looks nice, now hire some decent staff. My dad was a patient, poor nurses ragged from running around. It took us asking repeatedly just to get him a cup of ice water. A couple of the nurses were awful; we stayed the night because we were afraid to leave him alone. One actually had the gall to roll her eyes when his monitor showed he wasn't getting enough oxygen and my niece went out to find someone because nobody came in when the alarm went off. She got snippy and said he was fine, but gee no, he wasn't. One doctor prescribed the wrong drug and I was the one who brought it to the attention of another doctor. They say you really have to be an advocate and that certainly true in this place. Hope nobody else in my family gets sick. Having to deal with this place would be enough for an older person to moved out of the area I would think. read more
