I don't think I can find the words to say how grateful I am that not only the kids got this opportunity, but the parents as well. I am truly amazed at this police department. How they "do it" is beyond me! Let me tell you why... Do you know the population of St. Augustine, Florida is right at 14K? WHOA! I know...right? It seems bigger than that. But you know what?...that means they have a very small police department since the population is low. Let's think about that for a minute...HELLO!...this is a tourist town!!! Doesn't it seem like you always see an officer somewhere? Next question...how many people do you think visit St. Augustine every year? Yep...I guessed a million too! But it's 7 million! Yes, 7,000,000 people! How does this police force keep up? They are humpin'..that's how! They have a very small force and it goes without saying they are understaffed. The next time you see a St. Augustine police officer take some time to thank them for all they do because it's not easy with these numbers. They are good, but numbers are thin. As for the station, it is very small. But we truly enjoyed learning about day to day operations there and learning how they juggle their schedules to make it work for the people (you and me that is). After all, someone has to always be on duty to protect and defend. We all thought it was cool to see the interrogation rooms, the evidence lockers and especially the vehicles. The bullet proof vest were a big hit too. I, and we, appreciated the educating tour of the police department by Officer Samson, the time he dedicated to us and making us feel very welcome. We called CCSO to get our friend to the hospital because he needed help. The deputies arrived professionally and calmly. They were all extremely polite and handled the situation in a stellar manner as to not add any stress to the situation. They stood by and wait for our friend to finish eating. I try to stay in my apartment, but I wasn't able to sleep for several days at that point. Officer Bradley and another extremely obese deputy from the jail broke both my knees and several ribs. They then threw me naked in a cell for two days. Ever since that day I have had nothing but horrible thoughts. I have to leave the country. No choice. I hope they meet their maker and get judged.

Nights of Lights never fails to amaze me, even after living nearby for 20 years. Visiting the old…read moreneighborhood brought us back, and my husband and I had an enjoyable evening walking around St. Augustine drinking in the history and beautiful lights. We spent a lovely walk around the waterfront, looking at the famous beloved Lions at the bridge and all the way to Flagler College. The Lightner Museum was the highlight across the street, and we walked down St. George Street for old times sake. Everyone wore masks and kept an appropriate social distance. Not crowded since it was after the holidays.

If you're in St. Augustine, The Old Jail should absolutely be on your list of things to see. It's a…read morefascinating little trip into Florida's history and conveniently located within walking distance of the Fountain of Youth. Of course, if you actually drank from the Fountain of Youth, then technically everything is within walking distance. The Old Jail itself is well maintained and gives you a real glimpse into what life was like behind bars back in the day. There's plenty of history here, and it's the kind of place that makes you appreciate modern conveniences like air conditioning, comfortable beds, and not being locked in a tiny cell. Our guide, unfortunately, tried a little too hard to get into character and crossed the line from entertaining into just plain creepy. I appreciate the effort, but there were moments when I wasn't sure if we were learning about the inmates or about to become them. Even with that, I'm still giving The Old Jail four stars. With a more relatable guide, this could easily have been a five-star experience.
