If you want luxury when you're visiting St. John, you're better off staying at the Westin or Caneel Bay Resorts. But if you just need a friendly, comfortable place to sleep and clean up in, then the St. John Inn is one of the best bargains on the island. Set on a hillside, the St. John Inn (formerly the Cruz Inn) is an old, rambling, bright blue guesthouse that is constantly being renovated by the owner, Dave Wolf. The layout of the rooms and the whole inn is rather irregular, but quaint. Everything is painted in soft pastel colors. We were expecting one tiny room for the relatively low price we were paying, but instead we had a sort of suite with a hallway, bathroom, sitting room and bedroom. Granted, the lighting may be a little dim; the paint on the walls may be a little chipped; the windows have screens covered by hurricane shutters instead of glass; the water pressure in the showers is rather low; and the pool out in back is modest, not Olympic standard, in size. However, if you're not going to spend a lot of time at your hotel or in your room (and on St. John, who would?), it's perfectly adequate. Every room has a private bathroom, air conditioning, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, cable TV, and free WiFi access. Best of all, they provide a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and a free Rum Punch Sunset Happy Hour every evening on the main deck, as well as free beach towels, chairs, coolers, and umbrellas for beach trips. The staff, although small, is very friendly and accommodating, and provides the same services, such as restaurant and tour reservations, as the fancier, more expensive hotels. The manager, April, is especially helpful. The inn is located within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and ferry docks of downtown Cruz Bay. There are also two jeep rental companies and a Spanish restaurant called The Spot Light located down the hill from the inn that draw a lot of the local people, but don't let it put you off. Everyone is very friendly, especially if you're friendly to them first, and they love it when visitors drop in. Warning: There's a rooster somewhere down the hillside who will wake you up at 3:30 AM every morning with his crowing. Since all of the Virgin Islands are infested with roosters, however, there's really no getting away from this. Bring ear plugs and you'll be fine. To make up for the rooster, there's also a resident dog named Killer (who's named that because he's obviously not, although he might lick you to death) who will come keep you company on the deck every morning. All in all, an inexpensive, quaint little place with a lot of character, and a friendly, at-home atmosphere that matches perfectly with the casual, laid-back style of island life.

I was a little hesitant on staying here because it was so much cheaper than the other options. I was wrong. They had some of the best service that I have seen. Let us store our bags in the office since our flight was early. Had a really nice breakfast, great local knowledge, and a rum punch at night. All of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would stay here over one of the resorts. It has a really nice community feel to it.

We were greeted by Denise, the very personable and cheerful owner of the hotel, who showed us to our room. She even carried our bags! LOL The room was nice, compact, and had everything we needed for a few days. The A/C worked great, a BIG deal in the summer! A small, but well rounded continental breakfast is served downstairs every morning. Good coffee and a selection of healthy small bites to get the day going! The hotel has very nice common areas, and fun to sit and visit with other guests, many of whom were repeat customers. It was always nice at the end of a long day to return to our super comfy room. We also met several of the staff, all equally as welcoming and warm. Denise and her staff were all so helpful with suggestions for restaurants, places, activities, any thing you needed. It's always nice to get a "local's" advice in such situations! Our only regret was never getting to meet Denise's husband (Dave I think). He was always around, fixing things, running errands, etc., we just never bumped into him. We hope to do so on our next stay! We'll definitely be back! Highly recommend Cruz Bay Boutique Hotel! It's the only placed we'd stay on STJ!

Lindsay gave us tour of our room and the facility. Wharfside is part of a multi-spot few buildings that include a few restaurants, wine bar, gift shop, slots casino, and more. None of that felt sales-y, and while I was worried about noise, it was soundproof and we had a great visit, including chilling on our big balcony a couple hours with in-room coffee each morning, and evening watching the lights of the harbor and enjoying breezes, stars, and pelicans dive bombing their meals right in front of the facility. Gorgeous! Lots of thoughtful add-ons in the room, great everything, and new/clean/modern/premier room/bath/amenities!!! Easy walk to tiny Cruz beach, quick shop, twenty restaurants in town. Easy walk to grocery store. Great mile hike to Honeymoon Beach or to Caneel Point (do the Lind Pt Upper trail for views; do the climb to Caneel, but skip Margaret Hill). Easy cab ($9 pp each way) to Trunk Bay and back. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

There is a trial you can hike to Honeymoon Beach. This beach was probably our top for just chilling out and enjoying the ocean. There were lounge chairs here, a bar to buy drinks, large area for shade, (if you need that) ;). We ended up renting a Jeep so we could go explore all the different beaches/areas of the island. Maho beach, great snorkeling, you will see a turtle. Even if not snorkeling you will see a turtle. Fun area here for food/drink, and lots of different rentals. The resort provides beach chairs for you to use, a cooler and you can rent the snorkel gear. I encourage you to take advantage of all that. They also provide ice. We didn't discover that until we had been there for a couple of days. Everyone working on the resort was so friendly, including the owner. When we go back to Saint John we will be staying here again! Thank you!

The property extends away from the water up a hillside, and there are some there rooms / buildings there, too; it appears they may have a bit of a different view with their slightly higher elevation (30-50 feet above, approx). The lobby, MVCI tour, workout room, and Mango Deli are in a building in between the two groups of rooms. The arrival Taxi will drop you at the lobby. The departure taxis have a pickup space next to the lobby, up a few stairs; if stairs are a challenge, they can meet you at the bottom. - - - Getting there - - - There is no airport on St. John; arrival is by sea, by ferry or another boat. Most guests will arrive via St. Thomas; ferries are also available from St. Croix (USVI) and the British Virgin Islands. There are two ferry options, both from the same dock at Red Hook on the east side of St. Thomas): 1. Westin ferry... arrives at the Westin's dock... disembark and walk to check-in... cost multiple times more than public ferry 2. Virgin Island Ferry / Public ferry... multiple departure locations to get to STJ; arrives one bay to north of the Westin; about than a mile away, in as the crow flies; 5-10 min drive... taxis available at dock throughout the day... $6-$12 per person per way... even with taxi will be much less expensive option; remember tip money for the ferry crew who handles your bags for you Both ferries offer Charlotte-Amalie to St. John routes, seasonal. - - - Check-in - - - Welcoming! Shania sped us to our room. We were here for our anniversary; when we arrived to the room, the bellhop presented us with a bottle of wine - so nice. Thank you, Shania! The room was also fantastic, with an ocean view of Great Cruz Bay - so peaceful and relaxing. - - - The Room - - - This is our first visit to a Westin vacation club; lone noticeable difference compared to a Marriott vacation club... most MVCI have kitchens... is that the Westin kitchen only has a two-burner stove and no oven; place settings for 6. The living room is a little smaller than elsewhere and not cramped. Otherwise the rest is standard MVCI: - 2 bedrooms, one king and two full sized beds- 2 bathrooms- Laundry- Kitchens with servings for 6 and all the utensils you need; refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, microwave and coffee machine.. with coffee available; just ask housekeeping for more / anything else- Patio table and chairs with a viewRecommendation: bring a Bluetooth speaker for music. - - - Food, groceries - - - Mango deli offers a good selection of food, and also souvenirs. They will make pizza, sandwiches, and even breakfast food for you. Otherwise it's a good selection; more than a typical MarketPlace, and not quite as much as a grocery; you could readily shop here for most of your needs and not need a grocery during a week's visit. The Mango Deli team is friendly and helpful. - - - Food, restaurants - - - The Westin has a sit-down restaurant, Lemongrass; it looked quite nice; we just did not get a chance to dine here. Snorkels Bar & Grill, at the pool, makes great burgers & fries, and drinks. - - - The Pool - - - Nice and well-sized. Also surrounded by trees, so you can definitely get sun, and if you need shade, you can relocate into the shadow of a palm tree. The activities team hosts trivia games and more. There is a volleyball net, too. - - - The Beach - - - The Westin has a beautiful view of Great Cruz Bay! The sand is nice and soft. The activities team offers hammocks, which are like rafts, but better... a pillow for neck and feet; the rest is a mesh that suspends you just under the water, letting you get sun without drying out - nice! The activities team offers beach games, too. You can rent kayaks; there is night kayaking, too. The Surf... not so much We've been blessed to visit a few Caribbean islands and they seem similar... beauty all around; but for surf, not so much. The tides are only six inches to a foot variation, which does not lead to many waves. You'll surely enjoy relaxing to the sounds of the water lapping at the shore. But for boogie boards, leave yours at home. - - - Thank you! - - - Thank you to Shania and all the team at the Westin St. John for being so welcoming! See you soon. ----- ----- -----

We are currently staying at The Westin St. John Resort Villas and unfortunately this has been one…read moreof the most disappointing resort experiences we have ever had. The most serious issue involved billing. We paid for our stay in full, yet the hotel continued manually entering additional nightly charges onto our American Express card. We only discovered the issue after AMEX notified us that our card had been maxed out and future transactions would be declined. When we reviewed the account, there were multiple pending charges from the hotel that did not match our actual purchases. One dinner charge of approximately $150 somehow became a pending authorization for nearly $1,000. Because of these repeated charges, we temporarily lost access to our primary credit card while traveling with our child. What was most upsetting was the response from management. The manager was largely nonchalant about the situation and offered only a brief apology despite the significant financial stress this caused our family. No meaningful compensation, assistance, or urgency was offered even after explaining that we now had concerns about being able to pay for necessities during our trip. This property is categorized as a four-star resort, but based on our experience, it does not meet four-star standards in terms of accommodations, maintenance, dining, or service. Our villa had: * stains on the couches, * holes in the bathroom wall, * broken tile, * a broken TV remote, * Stains on the walls and cracks on them, * water stains and mold on the ceiling. The overall property also feels run down. Parts of the pool area appear to be deteriorating, and the atmosphere has changed significantly from what you would expect from a resort in this category. Service was also inconsistent. While a few staff members were genuinely kind and helpful, many others appeared visibly disgruntled, unhappy in their jobs, and uninterested in providing hospitality-level service. The difference in energy compared to what you would expect at a four-star resort was very noticeable. Golf carts also speed aggressively throughout the property, which feels unsafe especially for families with children walking around. Dining options were extremely limited. At night there is essentially only one restaurant option, and during parts of the day only a snack bar is open. The food overall was mediocre at best and nowhere near the standard expected for the cost of staying here. The natural beauty of St. John is still incredible, but sadly this resort no longer reflects the quality, service, or experience its pricing and four-star designation suggest.

And so we ended up at the lovely Westin thanks to my starwood points- can't beat a free vacation. While we didn't stay at Caneel Bay, we did spend a lovely day here. The concierge at the Westin had highly recommended the brunch at Caneel Bay, but when we got there we were informed they aren't serving brunch til January. It didn't make much sense to me since the holidays are the high season for them, but the regular lunch menu looked great too. Parking at Caneel Bay is $10, but if you eat lunch they'll validate your parking. Worked for me! The food at the beach restaurant was really good. I enjoyed a mozzerella sandwich and some tasty fries that came with it. And my hubby seemed to really like his club sandwich as well. The service was top notch as well, something we felt that was missing from our stay at the Westin. We took the short trail over to honeymoon beach. It was a very small beach, but quiet and beautiful. I worked on my tan, while my husband snorkeled. He had snorkeled at many different beaches on the island and said this was one of the best snorkeling experiences. We then walked back over to use the beach on Caneel Bay. They allow visitors, but you're not able to use their lounge chairs and equipment unless you're staying there. Regardless we were happy campers soaking up the rays (and more snorkeling for the hubby) on this gorgeous beach. It was one of the loveliest days on the island. I'd definitely look into staying here during the off season when the prices aren't so high...or if i ever win the lotto.

Once booked, the communication was fantastic in the weeks leading up to our stay. It is self check-in/out and instructions were sent to me via text the day of arrival. Additional texts with info was also received during our visit with a contact number if we needed anything. We stayed in Suite 7. It was spacious, clean, comfortable, and located in a secure and quiet area. A kitchen area, living room area, bedroom and large bathroom provided us plenty of space. This is also a room with a nice view. The only minor issues were the toilet seat and cover are clearly the wrong size (kinda funny but still works fine) and the 2 mini bars of soap we're really enough but we made due. If you have a car, there is parking. If you need a taxi from here, well, it was a challenge, especially leaving with luggage. Upon arrival, the air conditioning was on and there was jazz music playing. Really made me feel welcome after a long day of travel to get there! Our suite also had a great view of the water, although I am not sure all do. The location was great for our family as it is right above a grocery store, was safe with 24 hr. security and not too far from the downtown area. The room was so modern and nice. It felt great to come home to a clean place everyday after getting dirty exploring the island beaches. There is a full kitchen with large fridge (although we did not cook, the microwave was handy). The bathroom was spacious and I love that you can watch TV in the living room without bothering those who want to sleep. The wifi was strong, but there is no cable TV, just streaming services using the wifi. There was plenty of storage space in the closets in the bathroom and the lockbox was a nice touch even though there is no room service. Would highly recommend for a family who wants a quiet place to unwind after a long day.
