The Jeep we rented ran fine it was damaged on every corner with the door lock falling out every time the door opened or closed, the wires held on though. Customer service sucked at best, 2 of the 3 people I encountered were rude as hell and one was a sweet heart. 1 out of 3 isn't good. They do offer free parking after 5 which is the only plus. I wouldn't recommend them solely based on the experience with their customer service. read more

We travel to St. John a few times a year and this is our first time renting from St. John Car Rental. Needless to say, there are far better rental options on the island. Customer service was 0 stars. The company had our flight details/travel itinerary and they were aware that we would require a "late" (5PM) rental pickup. As soon as our flight arrived in St. Thomas, the receptionist was calling my wife and inquiring where we were. The receptionist was rude and bothered that we were picking up after hours. When we arrived to STJ car rental we were greeted by the same receptionist. We signed our paperwork and received our vehicle. The vehicle was clean and we had no complaints. Per the rental policy, the vehicle's gas tank needs to be filled upon return. We had an early flight out of St. Thomas and an even earlier ferry ride from St. John. Since the gas station didn't open until 7AM, we elected to fill the vehicle the night before. When we dropped the vehicle off at STJ car rental, the vehicle was full of gas... however, I noticed a $34 charge on my credit card from St. John Car Rentals a few days later. There is a $20 fee for an unfilled gas tank per the rental policy, as well as the cost to fill the tank... A gallon of gas on the island is upwards of $7. This tells me that St. John Car Rental charged me $34 for two gallons of gas. I could understand if a quarter of a tank was gone but $34 is a money grab. There are better rental options on the island. read more

We had never been to the island before and we're looking forward to our experience. We rented thecar for three days even though The Island is small and we really didn't need it we wanted to drive around and see what the island was all about. When arriving we called the rental company only to be told by a young lady that it's " on the street in front of us near the Catholic Church. Which means nothing to me since I hadn't been to the island before. After lugging our bags three blocks and stumbling through town to find the rental company we approach the lady who explained that she was about to close for the day and we were lucky to get there on time. She was extremely rude while she explained the policies. Her attitude alone will be the reason I never rent from them again. On the good side the car was nice and clean. read more

We've rented from them for a lot of years. Operation has become more sophisticated in last 8ish years and in a good way. Pick up and return is easy, they're much more relaxed about a little sand in the vehicle as long as you put some effort into cleaning it up before returning. Scratches on bumpers and things are already there and they don't hassle you about it, mainly concerned about any new dents. They take before/after pics so there's no dispute. read more

My wife and I recently paid our own way down to St. John to do some post-hurricane volunteer work, and we rented a Jeep from St. John Car Rental. We supplied them with our insurance company name and policy number, but because we didn't have complete coverage info at rental time, they slapped on a $150 Collision Damage Waiver charge, saying they would remove it when they got full insurance information. We tried numerous times during our trip to contact our insurance company and get them to email St. John Car Rental, but there was almost no cell service or WiFi on the island in the wake of the hurricanes, and we were unsuccessful. When we returned the Jeep, the car rental people inspected it, and there was obviously no damage to it. Also, they knew we were down there doing relief work, and were aware of the virtual impossibility of contacting anyone in the states -- particularly from Coral Bay, where we were staying. In spite of the fact that they knew the car was undamaged, they refused to drop the $150 Collision Damage Waiver charge, saying this was their policy. It seems to me that this "policy" is just their way of gouging every last nickel out of someone who had already spent a couple of thousand dollars to come down to help. You can form your own opinion, but I will certainly never use St. John Car Rental again. read more

We were in St John Aug 2019, This was amazingly Fast. We had never been there before and you get off the ferry, turn right, go just about 200 feet and there you are. They had our paper work ready and car pulled up. That was it!!!. They had emailed me everything I had to fill out before I got there so that was all I had to do. It was faster than any Hertz or Avis line I have been to. The return was even easier. I drove up. They walked around the car, checked the gas gauge, and wished me a safe trip home. They couldn't have been more accommodating or helpful. Of note, they do not allow paddleboards on top of their vehicles. I thought that would be a problem. But it really isn't. Most Beaches that would be good for SUPs have them for renting at those beaches. So no real need for hauling SUPs around.- I wish I could find more rental companies like this at the other Caribbean islands! read more

After I booked the car, the Governor of Virgin Islands prohibited businesses, hotels and all accomodations from accepting new bookings due to COVID-19. Unable to book a place to stay, I canceled the trip that's still 2 months out but St. John Car Rental is refusing to refund my $100 deposit. I woudn't use this company. read more

This is a really tough review for me. We have been using St. John car rental for years. The personal service for years provide by Cynthia and Sylvanese ( sad to hear she left) have been awesome. Always welcomed by name and an open armed hug welcoming us back. Even knowing my kids names. The cars are always in good condition and if we have any issues their addressed with no issues. But reception was cold as ICE this time new owners I beg you bring back the personal service the warm welcome. We wish you the best and WILL continue to use u but personality and love go a long away. Learn your customers. Also it's a cold way to reserve a car on line. A little conversation goes a long long way. I'm thrilled to death Cynthia is still there greeting with a smile love and those intangibles that should make St. John car rental the place to go. I've rented from St. John Car Rental 9 times since Hurricane Irma rolled through and even had one of their jeeps the 17 days I was stuck on island during Hurricane Maria. The office staff is very friendly and the cars are newer models and always cleaned thoroughly. I especially love that it's a flat walk from the dock to their office when rolling my luggage to or from the ferry. read more

We had an awesome experience with St. John Rental! We rented two vehicles for the past two weeks, a 4 door and a two door jeep. The initial process of booking on line was flawless and very professional. The actual pick up was very professional. Our flight was getting in after they closed and they made arrangements to stay open later in order to ensure we got the vehicles. The vehicles were spotless and in great shape! Our vehicles had around 3K miles on them, ran beautifully, new tires, and VERY clean! Thanks again to everyone that made our vehicle part of our vacation seamless!!! As long there is space, they allow you to park on their site when visiting town. Their vehicles are well kept, clean and reliable. I would highly suggest booking ahead to ensure availability. I have never been treated so poorly. We rented a Jeep for our 20 year anniversary trip and arrived to find a stinky unclean and unsafe vehicle. I immediately asked for a replacement as this vehicle was unacceptable. I was told none were available. I watched as 5 other vehicles left that were nice new ones. I asked to cancel the reservation and was told I could not and that I would forfeit the deposit. After being told i would lose the deposit I was forced to take the vehicle. I will upload photos so you can see how horrible the vehicle was. I asked for a replacement and was told I would not be able to exchange the vehicle. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

Booked online before our trip.. we figured it would be easier to book on St John instead of renting a car on St Thomas then transferring over on the ferry just to save a few bucks. Also, before booking any car rentals make sure you are even allowed to take the rental on the ferry - per the rental place agreement, heads up! The location was convenient from Red Hook Ferry Dock.. a quick 5min walk. It was great to use around town and go to the beaches. Return was a snap! Thumbs up! P.S. We used their parking lot several times and avoided searching for the scarce parking "downtown". Two door Jeep was basic, clean and great to have on the steep rough roads. Very happy. read more

We visited St John for the first time last summer (June 2017). Being our first time on the Island, we did not understand the complications of renting/returning a vehicle during the 4th of July. Upon arrival, we knew we had to have a vehicle to get back to the ferry on July 4th and thus asked if we could extend our jeep rental by one day. We called St John's office and they agreed to let us drop our jeep off on July 4th (everything is closed for Holiday) so we said we would pay the extra day until July 5th and just let the jeep sit in the lot for the one day. Everything seemed ok until the ETREMELY rude owner showed up to Trunk Bay and was in the jeep accusing us of stealing the jeep and stating that he spent the day looking for us (We were on the beach all day). We tried to explain that we had cleared it with his office staff to rent it for an extra day. He would have none of it. Continued to scream at us about ruining someone else's vacation and that he was about to call the police. I was speechless (actually many words came to mind). Had he calmly explained that his staff was not authorized to extend the lease and that he needed the car back immediately, we would have been fine. He followed us back to our house and took the jeep. So, we felt stranded on our last day on St John. Fortunately, the woman from Catered To rental arranged with Mr. Piper to pick us up on July 4th and maneuver around the closed streets to get us back to the ferry for our departure. So, fast forward and we are returning to St. John for two weeks with another family. We are renting a total of 3 jeeps for the 2 weeks....needless to say, St John car rental is not the company we are leasing the jeeps from. I feel sorry for the employees who have to deal with this hotheaded boss/owner on a daily basis. read more

We had a very poor experience with St. John Car Rental over the holidays. First of all, we went to beautiful St. John to support the island after two major hurricanes in 2017. We have been going to St. John for 20+ years and it is a very special place for us. Also, we pretty much rented cars from every company on the island. Our expectations were not high due to the devastation to the island with the understanding that things were not going to be fully operational. However, the only disappointment we had was with this rental car company. When we were picking up the car, the employee of the company counted the rental days wrong and insisted on charging us an extra day. After 3 tries to explain to her, I turned to the owners asking their help. They agreed with me that it was an error but accused me by being rude. I was frustrated, not rude, because she did not understand the basic aspect of counting the rental days. It is probably not just her fault, but she was not given proper training either. To make matters worse, when we got home and checked the credit card, we saw 3 charges from this company. Sure enough, we were charged an extra day. The only credit I can give to this business is that when I emailed this error and they agreed to refund the money quickly. However, If I did not catch this error, they were going to charge us more than what we owed. After talking to locals on the island, we realized that the management has changed and there are new owners of this rental company. Unfortunately, their service is not what you expect from a friendly St. John business. You have a lot of options for car rentals on the island and I would suggest you rent from another company. Please go to St. John to support this beautiful island and its people, but save yourself a trouble and rent a car from another company... read more

Horrible service. I called to see if they had cars available during the dates we were going to be there. A very rude woman said yes but I need to send information. She wouldn't tell me what information but I figured it out on their website. I emailed the information as directed but that wasn't good enough. I found out 3 days later, after my second email asking why they haven't responded, that I had to fill out specific forms. I filled them out immediately only to find out they don't have any cars!!! Didn't list any option, sign any name, just 4 little words- sorry no cars available. So frustrating. And now they have my credit card info since I was required to fill out that form to request a car. read more

This business does not properly maintain their vehicles, especially their 7 passenger cars. The first Nissan Pathfinder we rented we returned due to brake problems. You could hear a metal grating against metal sound while driving even with the windows rolled up. The replacement Pathfinder we received also had brake problems and the brakes eventually completely failed while being driven. We were very lucky not to have any injuries or worse, especially since St. John has very hilly terrain. The third vehicle we were given was a Jeep. This car looked better visually, however the check engine light came on while driving. While we did enjoy our stay in St. John, the constant car rental problems were a source of anxiety every time we wanted to go about the island, especially traveling with young children. For all these troubles, this company did not offer much in the way of an apology nor compensation. It is evident that this company does not care about their customers or the risk they put them in their broken down vehicles. Consider another rental company when renting!! read more

I am going to St. John at the end of March. At the suggestion of the owner of my condo, I reached out and ultimately reserved through St. John. I read their FAQ's and Terms and Conditions - at least one of which stated there was a cancellation fee for cancelling prior to three weeks ($25) and within three weeks (non-refundable). Ultimately, had to cancel reservation because we wanted a different day that they could not accommodate us for. No big deal right? It's about 7 weeks before I travel there. They were nice enough with the cancellation and mailed me my refund check, MINUS $25. They indicate that is is stated in their FAQ's and T&C's. So basically it is a cancellation fee if you have to cancel at any time for any reason. FYI. $25 doesn't break my bank but this is ambiguous at best, shady at worst. read more

Rented a car from them in July 2016. Rented a newer Jeep Cherokee. The car itself was fine, and the people were helpful and nice. Go over all the vehicles with them thoroughly as they'll all have lots of dents and scrapes. Car ran fine and charges were correct. You can also walk to them from the ferry and park at there lot for free when downtown. I would rent from them again. read more

St. John Car Rental is a fantastic option for jeep rentals in St. John. One of the great things about renting here is that throughout your stay you can use the parking lot when in Cruz Bay for the day. This meant that I didn't have to waste time looking for (and paying for) parking when coming into the Cruz Bay area for kayaking or dinner. It's a locally owned business managed and staffed by really friendly and helpful people. Our Jeep was well maintained and ready to go on arrival. Rates were competitive and the location is very short walk from the ferry dock. We traveled all over the island and the jeep we rented was well maintained and easily handled St. John's mountainous terrain. I look forward to using them again when in St. John. read more
