It's closed. Permanently. Much to my chagrin. The real farmers market is on Saturday.

I recently stopped by the St Helena Farmer's Market while traveling between Clear Lake State Park…read moreand Brannan Island State Park. (To be real, I wanted a burger from Gott's, but they weren't open yet.) The market was on the smaller side, with maybe about twenty active booths. It was much smaller than the farmers markets I'm used to in the Sacramento area, but much larger than the 4-booth market in Yosemite Valley. The best decision I made was ordering a ham and Swiss croissant from the pastry booth. Sadly, I don't remember the name of the booth, but it was the best croissant I've ever had in my life. (I think it was West Won Bread, unless it was Patisserie Angelica Sebastopol.) A slightly less wise decision was ordering the strawberry shortcake from the cooking school. The student, who did not give off any kind of competent vibe, whispered to the order-taker, "How do I make that?" She quickly recited, "biscuit, whipped cream, lemon curd, berries." I mean, the photo really speaks for itself. There was less than like two tablespoons worth of chopped berries, and the top of the biscuit was not covered in curd. The flavor was all there, but the presentation and portion sizes were not. Then again, this was a cooking school, so maybe some mistakes are to be expected. I wouldn't have ordered from them if I wasn't willing to take the risk. Even though this is a small market, the quality of the vendors is on the supremely artisan side. Definitely worth stopping by for a bite to eat if you're in the area. (Also a great brunch option.)

My al pastor super burrito was tasty and as filling as usual. My wife ordered 3 tacos (lengua, chicken and beef cheek) and they were all tender and flavorful. We also ordered their creamy guacamole and a couple of pieces of chicharone, which was very crispy and authentic. Definitely give it a try if in the area!

3.5 STARS Always a…read moregood sign when you see native speakers rolling in deep and you get awkward stares. Azteca Market seems like THE place locals go to when they want legit taqueria fare specifically menudo and offal filled tacos. Their St. Helena location opened over 20 years ago and their Napa location followed a decade later. This is the only location with seating (outdoors only). Part market and part taqueria, there's three lines: meat counter (chicharrón by the lb!), taqueria, and market. After ordering at the meat counter or taqueria, you need to go to the market line to pay. You're then given a number and your number will be called outside at the pick-up window. M E N U Typical taqueria staples: Street tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, tortas, etc. They give you one container of your choice of salsa (pico, roja, verde, avocado, or habanero) and charge 50 cents for additional salsa. Protein: Pollo, asada, lengua, cabeza, buche, carnitas, pastor, and suadero. Menudo available on weekends but they consistently sell out within one hour of opening (by 10 am). Sucks they don't make a larger order ahead of time. Cc's accepted. F O O D * Chips ($3.29) Housemade chips, thick and hearty but hard on the teeth. * Guacamole ($5.25) Rich and creamy with a nice bright tang. Heavy on the onion and tomato filler. * Tacos ($3.75 each): https://tinyurl.com/y2fu8tst Tacos are served on a warmed, double corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and lime (requested salsa on the side). - Lengua: Beef Tongue x2: Small, tender beefy bits. - Cabeza: Beef Head x2: Soft, shredded beef texture. - Suadero: Rose Meat x2: I couldn't tell the difference between this and the cabeza. While soft, they don't sear the suadero after braising for those delicious charred edges. Solid salsas: avocado (creamy and tangy) and habanero (punchy with a medium spicy kick) S E R V I C E The cashier was really friendly but the other staff were all business. Food took awhile since there was a group of 10 before us. A M B I A N C E Organized market filled with A LOT of items. Handful of shaded tables in front. P A R K I N G Shared lot with Clif Family Tasting Room. Overall, decent street tacos that scratch the itch esp if you're looking for cheap eats in the bougie St. Helena area. I prefer the grimy Tacos Garcia (truck) but Azteca has shaded outdoor seating so 3.5 stars rounded up.

I've been going to Giugni's since I was a teen, it was the after-school spot and it still hits…read moreevery single time. They never skimp on the meat, cheese, or toppings, and the bread + deli selection means you can create so many different sandos. Right in the center of Main Street, perfect for a picnic or a quick bite anytime. The space is always clean, and I love the variety of snacks and drinks they carry. And of course... the iconic Giugni Juice. A true local fave that never disappoints. Still one of my go-to Napa Valley staples.

It's the only place I know that has white sharp cheddar cheese, which I love on sandwiches, and I always get their Guini juice on the side. That said, I was a bit taken aback by the pricing on my most recent visit. I completely understand that prices go up, but my veggie sandwich was listed at $13.75 and I was charged $17.75. It turns out certain breads are an upcharge, but that wasn't communicated--I only realized after I had already paid. I also asked for pepperoncini and was charged $3, even though it's supposed to be $1.75. On top of that, it looks like I was charged for cucumbers, even though they're listed as part of the vegetarian sandwich, which feels a bit misleading. I've never had this issue before, so next time I'll definitely double-check pricing or order online since that's always been accurate for me. I still enjoy the food, just wish pricing and add-ons were more clearly communicated.
