We love St. Edward. I am an alum who learned both values and academics needed to succeed in high school, college, and graduate school. This community is exactly what our children need. We watch them go off to school full of happiness and eager to learn. We couldn't ask for better environment for our children. Great School! Dedicated faculty, diverse student body, and a wonderful community to be part of. Most alumni go on to competitive high schools and prestigious universities. Kids are taught more than normal academics (which are taught very well...they are a Blue Ribbon School), they are also taught leadership, serving others, giving back to their community, and being good people. I highly recommend for any family who want a solid formation and education for their children. read more

As I write this, my daughter is in 4th grade and my son just started Kindergarten. We cannot be happier. Our daughter started at this school in preschool and we have seen her grow and experience everything this school has to offer. She is just getting into the sports programs there which will elevate her confidence even more. The small class sizes, great families, and teachers all put forth an effort to insure that your child will excel in life. Also, most of the children that have graduated from this school have qualified for great high schools in the area, from Loyola, Notre Dame, and St Ignatius to Northside College Prep and Whitney Young. St Edward School has excellent academics and an amazing community of families. The teachers genuinely care about their students and work with them in small groups so each student can maximize their potential. The school offers a variety of extra activities, including athletics, music lessons/band/choir, theater, chess, and boy/girl scouts. I attended St. Edward back in the 90s, and all I can say is the values instilled have never been forgotten. I send my children here and I couldn't be happier with the community, teachers and values taught. The fact that we became a Blue Ribbon School this year, just shows everyone the kind of school we are. The community of parents, volunteers and teachers is amazing. We've had our son at this school for 4 full school years now. It is a great school community: Really committed teachers and a super involved base of parents who give their time, money and professional expertise to help make this one of the premier Catholic schools on the NW Side. The school has iPads for students and just this year raised funds in one special night for a major purchase of new laptops and other equipment. The academic cores, along with faith and just good "be a good person" life lessons, are the bread and butter at this school; my son was an excellent reader already as an incoming first grader. read more

Worst experience EVER! The school and staff should not be teaching young children. Communication between faculty and parents with this school is even worse. This was a wasted school year in education that my child can never get back. Lack of aides in classrooms that went on for weeks before parents were notified. This is especially concerning for the younger PreK 3-4, and Kindergarten class in regards to saftey. Save your money and child from a bad experience. read more

I was very disappointed to read the previous review, especially since the reviewer has not been at St. Ed's for over 1-year. My children have been at St. Ed's for the past 5 years and while not perfect, it's been a great environment for them. Communication has improved drastically with a revamped website and weekly email blasts. Over the summer, our principal has sent several emails to inform parents of changes and keep the lines of communication open. The faculty goes above and beyond to work with the students and parents, both academically and socially. My oldest child is excelling and runs into school every day, excited to learn. If there has ever been a problem socially, I know I can email or speak with the teacher to get to the root of the problem. Fortunately, it has never been anything major, just kids being kids. The community is amazing -- my family is out of town and I have found a Chicago "family" at St. Ed's. I know that if I am running late for pickup or need to find out about something going on at the school, there are 15 families on my speed dial I can call. My kids are with other kids who are learning the values of caring and giving back. Volunteering is a huge part of St. Ed's, whether it is helping with a food drive, leading songs at the all school weekly mass or having a 4th grader be a reading buddy to a kindergarten student. Academically, students are pushed when they need to be challenged and supported when they need additional help. St. Ed's graduates matriculate to schools that are appropriate for them - whether it's Whitney Young or Lane Tech (CPS) or Loyola Academy, St. Ignatius College Prep, Resurrection, St. Patrick, or Notre Dame College Prep (Catholic). What I appreciate most is that the kids can be kids -- they are nice kids, who act like 13 and 14-year olds. I would highly recommend St. Edward School to anyone looking for a strong academic foundation and an amazingly supportive community. read more

I'm in my third year as a St. Edward family. My daughter started Kindergarten this year and I am absolutely blown away, even in the 2nd week by her teacher. My son graduated from St. Edward Grammar School in 2010. The education he received there gave him an excellent foundation for high school and in fact his entrance exam into high school put him in the top 10% allowing for a scholarship his freshman year. He is now in the top 5% of his senior class and has above a 4.0 GPA. St. Edward school recognized his academic performance early on, put him in accelerated reading and he was able to advance with support and guidance. The sense of community and dedication of the teachers was worth the investment. The school leadership is responsive, attentive and visible. I highly endorse St. Edward grammar school and miss those years as they are fabulous educators. There are also plenty of social opportunities for families to enjoy with the sports program and school activities as well. read more

I am a graduate of St. Edward ('93) and because I valued my experiences so much, I chose to send my son to this school as well. This is my 3rd year as a St. Edward parent and I couldn't be happier. Being a teacher myself, St. Edward offers so many of the things every school should provide and that help children become successful learners. The small class size is the most important factor, and biggest selling point, for me. I have had classes with 30-35 students, and I know that when a teacher can work with a class of 16-20, so much more learning occurs. Each child gets the attention they need. I have seem my son grow and develop immensely, especially this year as he is in kindergarten. The early years are so critical for academic development, and he has been soaring since December. The St. Edward community compares to no other. Every stakeholder takes responsibility for every student, whether the child "belongs to them" or not. It makes me feel better knowing that while I can not be at school as much as I'd like, other parents are looking out for my child the same way I would. My son has a severe tree nut allergy, and the sensitivity to this issue by the school administration and teaching staff has made it a lot easier to send my son to school. All stakeholders care for the well being of every students and it shows. St. Edward also offers a variety of extra curricular activities, which is wonderful as well. Many of the activities are ones parents would seek out through private companies or organizations. With St. Edward, many of them are right at your doorstep! I couldn't be happier with my experiences with St. Edward and I recommend this school to anyone looking for a safe, loving, and nurturing environment for their child. read more

Our experience at St. Edward has been amazing. The Jr. High experience has been wonderful. The teachers' more than prepare the kids for High School. The extracurricular activity is fantastic. There are academic clubs, theater and music opportunities, robotics and sports for all ages. The aspect that impresses me most is that over the last 5 years, we have seen consistent change in the curriculum. When a new standard is set, our children are exposed to it immediately. My daughter spent the past year at St. Edwards, and we have enrolled her again this year. We love the school. The teachers are responsive, they have an abundant of activities/sports/clubs they can do starting at a young age, and we have really felt embraced by the St. Ed's community. Religion is obviously important as it's a Catholic school but isn't pushed too hard-no one would feel left out if they didn't go to church every week or weren't Catholic. We had our daughter in T-ball this summer and plan to sign her up for basketball in the fall. Everyone affiliated with the school seems to be very committed and the school had 25+ kids graduate this past year so no issues with enrollment like some of the other schools in the area.
